I'll take sour mash Bourbon anyday over the priciest Scotch.

Bourbon comes in Sour Mash?

I prefer Dickel.

Whilst drinking my newest favorite, Canadian Mist
Dewar's ain't bad for a blend. It was my Scotch of choice before I started drinking single malt, then had kids and got cheap and started drinking American whiskey then Canadian whiskey. What's next I'm not sure. Maybe Japanese whiskey? I dunno.

Anyway, I don't think the Dewar's will disappoint you.

the only rule I know is 1 bourbon, 1 scotch, and 1 beer...

today's alcohol minutia
All bourbon and TN whisky is sour mash. Jack Daniels famously claims it on their labels but they ALL do it, and with good reason.

All "Sour Mash" means is that they take a portion of the mash from the last batch and add it to the next batch of mash. This process helps ensure that the new run of whiskey will have exact same taste as the previous day’s distillation. The process ensures continuity in fermentation and guards against the invasion of wild yeast. Sour mash got its name because the thin spirit “beer” remaining had a slightly acidic taste.

I plan on getting my hands on a bottle of Macallans for the holidays. I’ve heard so much about it. I actually saw one web site that said their 10 year old is better than their 12 year old. WTF? The cheapest I’ve been able to find it is like $45 a bottle.

bitpusher, I've heard Japan has some nice single malts actually. For real.

Nigal, older isn't always better.

I've heard of Japanese "scotch" but never had any. However, if the Japanese are making it, they will surely go the extra mile. Anybody who's had Kobe beef knows what I'm talking about.

So I had some holiday money that was just burning a whole in my pocket. I'm normally bad about having cash. I fritter it away on stupid stuff like a run through McD's. So decided to stop at the liquor store for a bottle of scotch even though I just bought one last week. I found a bottle of Dalwinnie 15 year old. Great stuff. It's got that delayed heartwarming glow and nice strong flavor. Well worth it.

That sort of outclasses the off brand Irish creme that I've been adding to my Ghiardelli's hot chocolate.

It's very good. I have a bottle of that and a bottle of 15-year-old Balvenie going at the same time. Also finishing off a bottle of 12-year-old Balvenie, and somebody laid some Glenlivet on me for Christmas.

I wish I liked dark colored drinks. Drank way too much of this stuff back in the college days and now the stomach revolts when it senses it coming.

THe only dark one I can't do is Jack Daniels. One evening it got way back in the evening and we devolved into shooting Jack. The smell of the stuff makes me gag and it's been over 10 years ago.

Well we started out with 151 rum marguiritas then Lynchburg lemonade then straight Jack Daniels. That's the one and only time in my life I've gotten sick from drinking. I can count on one hand the times in my life I was truly drunk. That may have been the first time but it's the middle finger on the hand where I do the counting.

South of the Mason-Dixie line or thereabouts it's iced tea, north of that it's brown lemonade.

Glenlivet's still my favorit standard. Last time I drank it though I got a bit carried away and drank a six pack and then 3/4 of a bottle. I was afraid I'd never be able to drink scotch again. The Dalwhinnie has a stronger flavor than the Macallans I bought last week but the flavor is great.

Since we're tellin' stories...

When I was a young fella, I had 16 screwdrivers at my bachelor party. To this day I have a hard time drinking OJ. Just the smell of it makes me sick.

By the way, I like to drink Gentleman Jack.

I love scotch, but I am starting to really love a good tequila...not that throat-burning Cuervo crap, the $50 bottle stuff: Herradura anejo, baby.

And the expensive stuff is so smooth, you don't need to gulp it and wash it down with salt and lime.

A good sipping bourbon is also gaining my favor.

I had a bottle of Herradura that I got in Cozumel. I did about half of it as the straight sipping tequilla and finished it by making marguirritas. I now have a bottle of Patron anejo. I think my problem with the good tequillas is it's not something I enjoy sipping at home. If it was a couple of good friends over I probably would. I think next time I have a small get together I'll break out the good bottle. Also, tequilla gives me heartburn.

It really wasn't any cheaper though I had to get it at the cruise ship terminal. I want to say about $45 USD.

My co-worker brought back a middle of the road anejo for me from Cancun. I think he paid about $12 and I found it on the net in the US for $35. I haven't gotten to it yet, but I suspect it will be great for Marguirritas.

I hope I can go back to 12yr old.

Macallan 18 is the bomb. Back when I was a relatively rich software dude back in the mid to late 90's I use to buy it quite often... it only cost $65 a bottle -- a steal at the time. Now I saw where it's closer to $200. Ouch! Bearmagnet you are indeed a lucky man.
