“Okay, so they're gonna bring down Mir next week. So, the thing it being lowered in orbit. Will this make it easier to see on Earth? And what are the chances of seeing the thing flame across the sky on its way - hopefully - to the Pacific?

“This NASA site http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/index.html can tell you when and where to see various spacecraft. You just go to Space Shuttle, for example, and there is a list of cities around the world that tells what day, time, and direction to look. At one time it had Mir info. I'm not sure if it still does. I have seen the shuttle from my backyard and it's pretty neat. It doesn't look like much, but it's the novelty of it.”

“This site is a picture of Mir docked with the Shuttle taken from the backyard of some guy in Boston. His telescope is one readily availabe to amateurs. The picture quality isn't great, but you can tell what you're looking at. I thought it was pretty cool.

They have had fires onboard, collisions with supply ships, etc. The thing is beat to crap. No one can afford to keep it afloat so it's time they bring the ole bugger down!

“I read today that the final trajectory is supposed to be in an arc from Japan down through the tip of New Zealand. So, I would imagine that we won't get to see the thing glowing through the air. Bummer.

Burn it!!!! I doubt the Northern Hemisphere will see much of a show, some may in the SW areas of North America but where I am, I doubted it and knowing OLD MAN WEATHER, I bet to see clouds. Last I heard it was destine to land in the S. Pacific Ocean, east of New Zealand. In a section of water like 300 something miles long by like 125 miles wide. They say most will burn up upon re-enter but the larger pieces(main body) will not. Apparently the Ruskies have taken out a huge million or billion dollar insurance policy in case it hits populated land.”
