Going out for the team

I started spring track last Thursday, for the first time. I?ve ran XC (cross country) since freshman year, but I have always been either to lazy or afraid that the coaches will kill me. Every one in my school calls the head coach Hitler because of the way she coaches, and the other 3 coaches are Hitler?s SS, that just gives you an idea how tough it is. However, I?m just thinking to my self that these are the coaches that are going to make something of me, and not just let the team widdle (sp?) away to a bunch of lazy fat kids. Every day we run at lest 6 miles, and on Saturdays we run, and lift weights from eight am to one pm. I hope and pray I get a Varsity letter because for XC we don?t go by the point system and in track we do, so I will feel like I really did earn it if I get one in track. I don?t know what my event will be but I think it will be in longer distance. So my main point of this thread is to tell you all where I have disappeared to, and so you know that I haven?t left you for good, but I just wont be able to post as much.

BTW did you guys hear about the kid that died on the track at Bergen Catholic High school in Bergen county NJ?

Well if you didn?t, the kid had a heart attack as they where running off campuses and he just fell and no one notice he was gone for a few minutes.

Six miles a day, holy 5hit!!! I was a sprinter and our workouts used to consist of interval training. Started jogging a mile to warm up. Then, as the distances got shorter and you got more tired, you were supposed to run faster.

From the mile, then we'd do a half mile, then a few quarter miles, then the 220s and then the 110s. You had to be blazing fast by then--fast as you could be at the end of a workout.

Hey, I'm (errrrrr.. I WAS) a sprinter. I could hardly handle anything over a mile. A mile did me in. Alas, it was a good sprinter workout. We had a good team. The letter jacket hangs in the closet in memory, full of clanky medals, including a couple from state.

And, tea, don't be confused by those YARDS and QUARTERS and things!!! lol!!! Have a great time and go for it. Pleasant memories here of barfing a hot dog during one track meet (a home meet to boot), having the baton fly onto the football field during a relay handoff (and we just quit running then, much to our coach's dismay. We soon found out just how we SHOULD HAVE handled it -- and it wasn't to QUIT! lol) and our assistant coach outrunning a patrolman who surely would have picked him up for speeding (a few of us went to federation meet)..... oh yeah, and the great feeling of kicking some ass -- even when running as assigned in the outside lane AFTER the staggered start had been made up in a sprint relay. One record still stands, over 20 years later.

Nuf said.........have fun and go for it, Ice Tea!

Long distance rules! Be as conscious of your body from moment to moment as you possibly can. You will even come to appreciate, (not to be confused with like), the aches and pains. And when you get out of school, continue to run. Running, (especially long distance), is something you can enjoy for a llifetime.

Liz, my warm up is 1 1/2 miles as of yesterday but that is subject to change. Then we did 10, 300, and right after that we did a 2 mile cool down.

That was yesterday (the 4th day of practice)

Hey, Tea. A good coach will get you to do stuff you had no idea you were capable of! Cut ol' Hitler some slack. Maybe she'll show you how you can "Rool ze Virlt!"

I was a sprinter too, back in the day. I did the 100 yard dash, the 220, the 440, the low and high hurdles, the first leg of all the relays, the high jump and the long jump. Track was alright, it was all the running, that I hated!

RE:

Ice, good deal! I was a worthless fat-body in High School. I have run regularly for the last 10 years.

Running rules. To build endurance, do intervals while running. Try to hold a pace that is faster than your desired race pace for 5 minutes (after you've run a mile or so). Then slow down to your training pace for 2.5 minutes. Do this once a week, start with short time intervals and work your way up to longer ones. This forces your body to learn to recover while its running, very helpful.

I am going to be starting to train for a race (in July) soon, cant wait! Watch the movie Galipoli a great running/war flick. GOOD LUCK T!

Tea, I reread my post. To clarify on the interval deal. Do the fast slow deal while on a regular run, just keep slowing down & speeding up. Check out Runners World mag, very helpful.

RE:

i always hear former runners, that are now older backpackers, say that they regret running and the damage it did to their knees. is there any way to prevent this?

RE:

Buy good shoes, replace at least every 350-450 miles (yes you should keep track). And dont overtrain, you need time to heal. and stretch blah blah blah....

A shameless plug for great shoes. New Balance, their higher end shoes are made in the USA!

Dude, I was giving advise that "former runners, who are now older backpackers" would give. You know I am against that stretching nonsense! Ever see a cheetah stretch before running down a gazzelle?

The cheetah comment was a Jack LaLane comment. I do stretch before I run, but its also before my morning pee and right after I wake up, I yawn while performing this stretch.

I am not baume 66. I am married to him. He is out in the woods of Saint Mary's Wilderness with his pack and some of the pouch tuna that is the topic of another thread. I have never posted before but felt compelled while reading about these stretches. Not one person mentioned the danger of letting out a big blast of gas during that first morning stretch. Does that only happen in my house. I am, of course, speaking of my husband and teenage son--not myself... no . . . never me. . .
