Oh - the dork wrote an article about bear spray, and his final comments were that he doesn't believe in any weapons including bear spray. That he wouldn't lift a hand against anything. And something about walking in bear country with open arms. I wander if he would still think that way if something or someone was harming his kid.

I'm curious if anyone has ever had to defend against a bear attack. Serious question. I'm thinking a handgun is going to be little use on a bear. I mean, if it charges you, you have 2 seconds to fire, if you're lucky? And you have to have good placement to drop it, even with the most powerful handgun cartridge? I know I wouldn't have the nerve. Maybe an auto-loading 30-06 at the minimum.

S&W just came out with a .50 pistola. If that doesn't give a headache to a bear, I don't know what will. They are promoting it for hikers but it's a little heavy. I think in most cases the "noise" from a handgun will frighten most bears. Not a good idea to piss them off though.

all a hand gun will do is piss a bear off and thats assuming its loaded and you can get it out of its holster. A lot more people are killed by psychotic gun-toting backpackers then bears.

i have a permit to carry a concealed firearm, but i don't carry on the trail.

anybody who does a decent amount of backpacking would realize that it's unnecessary.

maybe y'all should do a little more backpacking and a little less #&%!$-talking.

I don't even think about carrying a gun on the trail although I certainly believe in the right to bear arms.

I would consider a gun if I was going to backpack in an area with a history of bear aggression to humans. Their are many precautions you can take to make an interaction with a bear less likely and to not agitate them in general.

I'm certainly not afraid of any human/s. But that's just me. I do think you should have the right to carry if you'd like.

I've not had bear encounters while backpacking, but three times I've been canoeing in Quetico bears have come into camp. One time a bear was circling the camp sniffing at our properly hung food bag. We moved our camp. As you've heard before, another time at 1am a bear did get our food pack and then decided to sleep it off about 20 feet from the tents!

When we relate this last event to locals, they were not surprised. Locals said the bears REALLY like it when people bring in coolors filled with beer. The bears open the coolors chew into the cans and suck up the beer.

Now THAT's something I would be afraid of--a drunk bear. Worse yet a bear with a hang over!

I'm carring a gun right now, but don't on the trail. I don't have any problems if someone else does.

There's been a couple of times that I didn't like the look of the trail head so rather than taking a chance of having it stolen I threw it in my pack.

guns
If going somewhere thats really deep in the woods or unfamiliar places I have a pistol in my pocket, I look at it as just another tool that more than likely I will not use but its a just in case thing.I,m not talking about being worried only about people but I have ran into packs of wild dogs, commom in Ohio, where it was useful and it beat being treed by a buch of mongrels that are not afraid of people. When I meet other hikers on the trail I dont say hey want to see my plastic garden trowel, just another tool, and I dont say hey wanna see my gun either. They might take it the wrong way and think I,m a perv and have a gun of their own.happy hiking!

Nooobie here
funny you asked this question...
I do have a pistolie, and was trying to figure out how to get a holster on my pack or where to Madelyn Stowe it. My permit only allows me to carry in NY, so any where else it is illegal. I was also wondering if it is really worth the extra weight, I aint no Rambo, and the only things in NY that might make me actually think of using it would be a Coyote, Bear, or Jason from Friday the 13th...But I was considering Pepper spray for two of the above instead.....What about long guns, you can carry them in just about any state, what about national forests do they have anti-gun laws? I probably wont take it unless when I do get some Spirence in de woods I feel a definate need for it.... I the mean time I will carry my Storm Whistle and blow it...haha

Talk about pepper spray. Some dudes are robbing bars and their clients, by spraying them with the stuff near Montreal here. The victims don't even know if the attackers were black, white or what not.

Anybody can carry a gun in WY. You can have a loaded gun in your truck, too, as long as it's NOT concealed.

I have carried a short barreled 44 magnum on my hip holster of my pack, and I've also slung it over the pack where it would hang down on the side where I could reach it if I needed it.

The only time I needed it was when my then hiking partner got into my bourbon. I'm going to miss that guy.

the only time i could see it reasonable to hike with a gun would be in grizzly country. and then only if you know how to stop a pissed off grizzly.

a coyote? give me a break. youre likely never to see a coyote, and would never need to shoot one.

You wouldn't want to carry a long gun into a National Forest unless there was an open hunting season. A game warden would assume you were poaching otherwise.

Oh, this again!
I drive my Abrams M1A2 tank on the trail. Nothing bothers me. No bear problems. No mugger problems. No problems with guys camping nearby keeping me awake all night. No raccoons stealing my food. No problem fording streams. No problem with laurel hells. No problem gathering firewood. And, with the optional flamethrower option, no problem starting a fire, even in a driving rain.

Here's a dumb question for Californians. It is next to impossible to get a weapons permit in this state, but can a person carry a handgun that is not concealed...like in a holster? I know it probably wouldn't work well along Figueroa or Wilshire, but is it legal to wear a sidearm?
