Heavy Metal, especially Metallica and Megadeath. Like Ozzie and Black Sabboth. Gotta love the classics. Recently I've started listening to R&B and cranking up the bass. If the walls aint shakin', it aint my room.

RE: yer music
I own approximately 7,000 33rpm albums, yes that vinyl folks! It started out when I had a small "rock shop" record store. I started trading more albums then I was selling new ones. I then started picking them up at yard sales and like any good addiction my activities increased to the level of obsessive and compulsive. next thing I knew I was going into NYC and buying a hundred at a time at this really cool salvation army store on the west side. Now I just spend time occasionally picking up albums that I need to complete group collections. I had to build a special wall cabinet to hold all them things. It's real cool when someone is over talking about a old song I usually have it........oh yeah I have a player too, nothing like the pure sound of analog recording.......yeah I know a little crackle but thats ok. I have cd's for the ones that I wont play.

RE: yer music
I usually make my own music up while on the trail. The internal struggle that is backpacking is my inspiration. I like the sounds that come natural are the only sounds I really enjoy.

Check out this exert from my last treks program. I know its not the same as actual being there & witnessing the serenity of sound I have to offer but it is the best I can do, I only perform life, no recordings are permitted when I do my art. I hate how commercial the recording industry is & I personally feel my work is too good for those record executives to leach off of anyway.

Orbits Midnight Stomach Sonata
Like those gassy sounds my stomach makes while digesting food. The occasional belch & its sweet perfume accompanied with aromatic tunes from the rump trumpet. A symphony of delicate bodily sounds warm up the hearts, tents & sleeping bags around my camp.

Orbits Cardiovascular Orchestral Song (Tunnel Vision)
When going up for that formidable accent, the pounding rhythm of my heart throbbing though my head, my lungs gaping for the thin air with each trembling step. I chant ?I think I can, I think I can?. It is one inspiring peace if I must say so my self.

Cartilage Concerto
Going down hill I listen to the unsettling sounds of my cartilage crackling and popping as my joints degenerate under burden of my big ass & that of my Pac. A rather crude peace, some could say painful but a work of art none the less.

Budder I don't know of Del Mcoury much. 'cept to have heard his name invoked. Bill Monroe, though I seen on film and heard the recorded music (never saw him play before he ided.... or since, for that matter). Wouldn't it have been something to hear him play with Flatt and Scruggs... talk about legends who changed the kind of music people play.

RE: yer music
When in doubt, I can always go to the classics: Beatles, of course; the Who, Led Zep, early Bowie, Pink Floyd (recently picked up Atom Heart Mother on CD), Humble Pie, Little Feat when L.G. was alive, Joan Jett.

Along the way since, I can always put on Jane's Addiction (Nothing's Shocking may be on my all-time Top 10 list) and early Smashing Pumpkins (Gish is still great).

Have enjoyed most of the Black Crowes, especially the Live w/Jimmy Page double CD, but the new LIONS album has left me cold. At their best, the Crowes are what I like in a straight forward rock n roll band (reference back to Humble Pie's Rockin' the Fillmore and Smokin' and Free, the predecessor of Bad Company and a much more interesting blues-based rock band of the late 60s and early 70s than just All Right Now, though that is a classic, too.)

Enjoying some of the acid jazz/techno ambient stuff the last couple years, such as Fila Brazilla, Funky Porcini, the Orb, Orbital, Sandoz, Tipsy. I think I'd like to infiltrate a real rave sometime. And the crossbred between techno and rock, such as Radiohead.

Some of the modern Scandinavian neo folk is outstanding, such as Garmarna, Hedningarna, and the incredible harmonies of Varttina. And there is wonderful Arabic and Indian music available now. Radio Tarifa is a Spanish/Moroccan blend band worth listening to.

Cuban jazz; West African juju music, such as King Sunny Ade.

Man, the list goes on because I like to range far and wide and listen to new stuff as it comes along, such as Shannon Curfman's Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions, a great debut in the blues/rock category. No genre restrictions, though opera remains the hardest to really get into.

RE: yer music
Pekka, I know one song by Garmarna--it's Vengeance, on the Nordic Roots compilation--and it's awesome! Should I check out the rest of their stuff? I like a lot of the Varttina I've heard--they were sort of popular in the Bay Area back in the late '80s, in the wake of those Bulgarian women--but I don't have any albums.

Radio Tarifa sounds like it's worth checking out. If you haven't heard Ahlam or Aisha Kandisha's Jarring Effects, you should--they're from Marrakech, and combine trad Moroccan, funk, house, psychedelic, and what have you. Lots of fun and totally fascinating--Revolt Against Reason by Ahlam is a good place to start.

You probably already know Ali Farka Toure, the Malian blues guitarist--again, if not, it sounds like he'd be right up your alley.

I got my son listening to my more offbeat and interesting music when he was too young to know how weird it was. When he was 2 or 3 he was fascinated with Egypt, so I played a compilation of Egyptian pop for him; 10 years later he still loves a lot of North African music. I got him hooked on Ennio Morricone by telling him it was 'cowboy music'. ;-) More recently he's become a big fan of Portishead, Pere Ubu, Stan Ridgway, Link Wray, and the Latin Playboys.

how the heck did I miss this thread before...

Dylan, Dead, Phish, Miles, CSN and sometimes Y (just saw Crosby last night), Neil Young solo stuff, Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Wilco, Whiskytown (great new album), Ryan (no not Bryan) Adams, Marley, Fiona Apple, Beatles, God Street Wine, Jimi, Santana (early stuff), Tom Waits, Stones, the Boss, REM, Radiohead, Moby, Prince, Marvin Gaye, Charlie Parker, Haynes Boys, Allman Brothers, Peter Gabriel, Indigo Girls, Toshi Reagan, Sheryl Crow, Jeff Buckley, Edie Brickell, George and the Freeks (ok, my old college band--get it, bongofreek)...

RE: yer music
tehipite, long time man! So glad to hear from you. I had noted your March post and saw a lot of connections. Yeah, check out Garmarna -- the Nordic Roots sampler tipped me to them, too; that cut's fantastic. I got the Vittrad album at our local public radio station's annual CD sale, along with a bunch of other Nordic albums that sampler clued me into; none have been disappointing. For rather haunting and trippy Nordic music, check out albums by Wimme, a Sami (Lapp) joik singer. He works with contemporary electronic sidemen -- sounds like Native American meets Tibetan throat singing meets Pink Floyd. That's what happens when the sun goes away for months upon months, LOL.

In the Middle Eastern arena, check out Camel Road by Sharkiat. The Radio Tarifa albums I have are Rumba Argelina and Temporal. Just think what Spain would have been like if the Moors had not been driven out.

RE: yer music
tehipite, a follow up on the Nordic music: One of the Hedningarna singers, Sanna Kurki-Suonio (now that's a good Finn name!), has put out at least one solo album and it is outstanding -- Musta. Your post got me looking in the CD rack and I just put it on; what a voice and very exotic music, including great percussion.

Hedningarna itself reminds me of a blend of Varttina's incredible vocal harmonies and the neo-traditional string bands from Sweden. They have a recent album called Karelian Visa, drawing on music of the Karelia region the Russians stole from the Finns.

When my daughter and ex went to Finland five or six years ago, they attended the biggest music festival, where my daughter got to meet Varttina when they headlined. She has a picture of herself with one of the singers -- a very, very pretty blonde. But then so's my daughter, LOL. What voices in these Nordic groups.

Last night just kept getting better and better.

First, my buddy, who works at a music store and has connections with radio personalities, got us FREE pavilion tickets.

Second, while walking to the gate, a dude gve us free VIP tickets and wristbands. Our seats were in the box section directly in front and 1 section back from the stage. We also got to drink and eat in the backstage area (outside).

Then, I see a dude that I haven't seen in a looooong time. Turns out he is a salesman for Coors now, and got us free beers. FREE BEERS!!!

Got hammered, especially 'cause I didn't have any dinner. Went to Country Kitchen and had a big breakfast after the show, and didn't make it home till ~1am. Woke up feeling slightly under the weather...but it was worth it!

Really, there were some good guitarists out there to pay attention to. Have you ever seen /heard George Lynch's solo run of "In my dreams?"

Also, Chris DeGarmo (Queensryche) is one of the better guitarists who can reach deep inside and put that through his instrument. Clapton is like that. With a lot of others it's just technique. Remember Yngwie Malmsteen and all those arpeggios? It seems Steve Vai had sort of a constructed passion in his playing too.

m&m, some of KingX's better material is from their title CD. Ty has quite a following too.

Dave Murray was pretty much a rythym kind of guy, or was it the other way around with Adrien? "Run to the Hills" was their signature song. It brought them to the U.S.

Who I Am

I am perfect nothing,
imperfect somethings.
I am extroverted.
A little crazy but less than perverted.
I can look in the mirror.
What was cloudy is now much clearer.
I can see my own beauty,
this passionate blood runs through me.

I am over the top and intense.
I am funny around my friends.
I am introspective.
I speak the truth I stay in perspective.
I'm a vivid dreamer.
I'm not dirty but I could be cleaner.
I swim in freedom.
I feel auras I just can't see them.
I creat with my own hands
I have faith in my own plans
I can face who I am
I make a better man

I eat too much when I am hurting.
Don't mind my job I just working.
I can bubble in romance,
but I can't juggle or dance.
I am always honest, genuine,
and firm in a promise.
I can open my mind without drugs,
but I'm not as strong as I wish I was.

I am who I am

I can look in the mirror.
What was cloudy is now clearer.
I can see my own beauty.
This passionate blood flows through me.

Skating down in Shinjuku

The scent goes straight to my prawn

Tail and fin she dives right in

Take you to the sushi bar and buy you some
Fillet and claw
Clam and tuna
Gonna eat it raw
She?s my my abaluna

Suck a tentacle dip it in sauce
Hot green root it sure is boss
My only vice is to slice it nice
And wrap it in rice
Oh, what a device
