RE: yer music
Dunk I agree with a lot of your choices. And I hugely admire Leonard Cohen, but since when is he an "American Roots/Jam Band."
He's Canadian, and if ya gonna pigeon hole him, he's acoustic folk.

But kuddos fer puttin' him on the list: except for the Phil Spector misprodouced album, Lenny has been putting out consistently excellent stuff for about 35 years.

RE: yer music
pedxing, I probably put him in the category for the American Roots angle, Canada is part of N. America too. He might fit better into the folk category but really, like you mentioned, you can't pigeon hole him into any category, his music is that unique.

Well it use to be Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple etc, but now it's more like Elmo sings the ABCs, Rock with Barney and Mother Goose's classic rhymes. I hope this stuff doesn't ruin my stereo.

I can relate. Unfortunately my oldest has reached the hip hop age. I get to listen to such songs as, Who Let the Dogs Out, Genie in a Bottle, You All Dat and much, much more. *sigh* I can't wait to reclaim the stereo. :o)

BaSO4, I can relate, although it's been a while. When Max was 5 I had to take him to see [shudder] Raffi...and just to make the experience as weird as possible, he was playing in the auditorium at my old high school...

RE: yer music
Lessee...some of the great '70s bands like Talking Heads, Television, Pere Ubu, Ramones, X-Ray Spex, Roxy Music, Iggy Pop, Bowie, and Eno; lots of surf instrumentals, especially Dick Dale; North African stuff, like Ahlam, Aisha Kandisha's Jarring Effects, Chaba Fadela, Khaled, and various Egyptian bands; classic gloom-'n-doomers like Joy Division, Nick Cave, and Thin White Rope; soundtracks by Morricone, Mancini, and Theodorakis; '80s bands like Shriekback, Gang of Four, Smiths, Blasters, and X; singer-songwriters like Dave Alvin, Stan Ridgway, and Tom Waits; and, of most recent vintage, Latin Playboys, Portishead, and Cracker (guess that dates me).

Gee, it's kind of fun to try to pigeonhole all that stuff...

I dig that commercial that has the dude making dinner for his girl, turns on the stereo and an extremely hard and heavy song comes on. And singing in a wickedly dark tone is "Let me call you sweetheart, I'm in love with you"

Got to admit it's getting better...

Bluegrass is music to my ears. In wPA in the Allegheny Nat'l Forest, every sonday I've drove home from that place there was a bluegrass station kickin' out the jams for me. btw - that's "Blueground Undergrass" Mr.Nuts...they got an award for best new bluegrass band last year...those guys are awesome. Hope to see Salmon the end of this month down in Columbus. And If anyone gets the chance to see Jazz Mandolin Project, do it, 'cause that Jamie Mansfield will play yer booty off with that mandolin. Guaranteed!
