Tell me what to buy
OH HAPPY DAY! I'm about to burst. I finally got my financial aid issues taken care of. I received a Pell Grant and just received refund check from the U for $2600. I'll pay off my credit card and still have about $1400 left over.

Needless to say, I'm goin' shoppin' this weekend. What fabulous gear should I buy?

RE: Tell me what to buy
Ok, here's a list of things I would like to get (I'll probably only get one or two things right now). Any suggestions based on these options would be greatly appreciated.

Oldie's want list:
boots
Zero bag (I'm tall)
lightweight stove
trekkin' poles
25-40 degree sleeping bag - for summer
more outdoorsy clothes in general
a car
a bike
a cd burner
a job not in Indiana (sorry you hoosiers)
somethin shiny

RE: Tell me what to buy
Buy the most expensive mountaineering boots you can find (accept nothing less than $350). Then you can wear them around campus and fit in. :)

RE: Tell me what to buy
Buy a 3-month or 6-month certificate of deposit. Then when the market really hits bottom buy some Cisco Systems or Hewlett Packard. Keep it 3 years and make some real money and then go on a shopping spree.

Old Sarge could use a new Mountainsmith Ghost, then I would take you backpacking.

What a deal!

RE: Tell me what to buy
If you have any money left over after going to REI, just buy one of those degrees from the back of a magazine. Then you won't have to go to school and you can use all your new gear.

RE: Tell me what to buy
O.K. oldie, here's my suggestions.

-boots - Scarpa
-bag - Feathered Friends Rock Wren and The Great Auk (layer system) this covers your summer needs too
-stove - MSR Pocket Rocket
-poles - Leki Ultralight Titanium
-clothes - Last Chance Sportswear, Jagged Edge Mountain Gear, Patagonia, PrAna
-car - Try this thing.
-bike - see above
-cd burner - I've got a Zip External so I can switch between my Mac and my P.C., they're pretty cheap too
-job - Move to beautiful Lake Tahoe, Hike the Sierra Nevadas, and visit Mel and the Lammas. And chicks dig it!
-something shiny - This would be legal if you got the above-mentioned job.

Hope this helps.

I don't know what happened to my Lake Tahoe link, but I'll bet you can still get there from here.
Try this one.

RE: Tell me what to buy
You could buy a pretty good mountain bike for that. You might want to save up some more though and get slightly better components.

RE: Tell me what to buy
Thanks for the info M. I don't think the "Car" is going to get me to the trailhead though. I'll check into the gear you suggested.

DM. I actually thought about buying a bike, but it's not practical right now for me to buy a bike. Maybe this summer.

Strip club? Never mind M, I've got a new idea. LOL

Boots that fit. Brand doesnt matter too much, just so long as they are full leather. Bag wise, go for down. Western Mountaineering or Feathered Friends. WM makes great summer weight bags, like the Highlite and Iroquois. FF is great b/c you can get them to overstuff bags, etc. The other stuff is totally personal preference. Have fun dude. I wish I had that much to blow on gear!
