RE: HIKING QUIZ
7 of 8. That 1 MPH on moderately hilly terrain sounds a bit bogus. I would say 1 MPH on steep stuff, plus they didn't mention amount carried.

I do feel the one about the lightning wasn't specific enough.

RE: HIKING QUIZ
I got 6 of eight as well. That 1 mile an hour crap has to be wrong. I climbed the North rim of the canyon in under 6 hours including the half hour for lunch, and that was heavy uphill with stopping every five minutes for the damn mules (but that's another story). Sounds like a bunch of weaklings. It was at women.com after all. (j/k)

RE: HIKING QUIZ
5/8. I misread the sprained ankle one. I thought it was a go up or go down question, which is better. oops. Then the 1 mph, and lightning. Oh well.

RE: HIKING QUIZ
What kinda trick questions were those? The lighting and mileage time and the sprain questions got me too. You don't know how many times I have come gimping off the trail. You know those "old football injurys" or that "trick knee" story.

RE: HIKING QUIZ
I got the MPH one right but for the wrong reason, I figure about 2.5 MPH +/-, I guess they figure everyone hikes the same pace. The trees and lightening question was rather vague, a clump of tress, forest or just a couple of trees? How severe is the ankle sprain?

BTW, Letterman's about to bring a bear guy on.

RE: HIKING QUIZ
I got 7 out of 8 right.

I chose corectly on the mileage question just because I know that 1 mile per hour on hilly terrain is consistent with all the current hiking literature. Although that is a very conservative figure.

The lightning question is too vague, but in general, their answer is wrong. The only time you should seek shelter under a tree is if you are deep in a forest, surrounded by many trees. Where the chances of lightning hitting your tree are lowered because of the amount of trees. In general, lightning will seek out the tallest object around. In fact, sheltering from rain under a tree is often a factor in people being struck. This is according to the NOAA and the National Severe Storms Laboratory.

1 mph is conservative in moderately hilly terrain.
Shelter from a lightning storm?...give me a break...too vague.

RE: HIKING QUIZ
6/8. lightning and sprain did not provide enough information to answer, and 1 mph was iffy. since they therefore shouldn't count, i got a 100.

RE: HIKING QUIZ
According to the Army survival handbook if you are in an open field with few trees you stand the distance away from the tree equal to one half the trees height. This is supposed to keep the tree as the most likely to get hit object and keep you safe from the ground spread and arcing.

RE: HIKING QUIZ
7/8! Damn sprained ankle. I thought one should rest and tape it before going anywhere.
The rest were easy.
1 mile is standard for large pack, rough terrain, in bad hiking conditions, always allow for saftey factors!
Lightning, "take shelter under trees" meaning multiple trees good, single tree bad.

RE: HIKING QUIZ
5/8
lightning, 1mph, ankle.

I can't believe you should pick out the highest lightning rod and stand under it,
nor have I ever walked 1mph on "moderately hilly" terrain

And damn it, if I sprain my ankle, I'm sittin' my butt right down and breakin' out the rum. I ain't going nowhere. Besides, if an ankle is truely sprained, you should use RICE:
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation.

Walking on it is BS.

RE: HIKING QUIZ

6/8 I got the lightning storm and ankle question wrong. However the way that the lightning question was worded it was up to your discretion to where you where, and I still believe that in a storm not to go running under a tree. Just cop a squat (take a seat) and enjoy the storm, unless your in a field. Then for the ankle question, I personally would have walked down on it, but I thought that the right answer would have been to wait for some help. Then on the mile thing, that?s total bull SHIT. I think most of us here can hike faster than 1 mile an hour, but my guess is when the survey was taken they included hikers like my BSA troop that do in fact go 1 mile an hour (those slow bums).

RE: HIKING QUIZ
utahiker, I saw on tv that in a storm, you should move to a clearing and stay close to the floor & curl yourself up to make a small target.

I did, however, get that question wrong, because it didn't say there was a clearing nearby.

LOL @ Ice Tea!!! You are too wild bro!
I missed those same questions too. I always heard if it's lightening, you need to get away from trees cause they become like targets.
I figured they would say if you got a bum ankle to sit on your butt and wait on a streacher or something.

I did like Lee and gave the answers THEY wanted. That Quiz was mostly Bullsh!t.
