Hittin' the trail this weekend
The pack's packed, the trucks loaded, I'm gonna stop at REI on the way to work and then it's time to hit the trail. I'll be visiting the land of Ishi, that famous last "uncivilized" Native American who walked out of the woods and into Oroville in 1911. Ishi Wilderness is awesome country, especially in the spring, lots of wildlife and fast furious streams. The hillsides are carpeted in green (fitting for St. Patty's Day weekend) and the wildflowers are bloomin'. It sure would be easy to just drive past work and start early.

Went to Ishi last year, great place. Which trail are you doing? We camped at Black Rock on Fri nite, went upstream from there.

I was gunna go for my first road bike trip of the year this weekend but I had my wisdom teeth yanked today (weren't working anyway) and it's now suppose to rain. Oh well I guess I just have to surf the Campmor site........got the bonus check this morning and a new pair of Sundowners are a must! While I'm at it I might as well get a few other goodies, I mean I'm already paying for the shipping. right?

Wanderer, I've done the route you mentioned it's actually not part of the Wilderness (downstream is) but you'd never know it. This weekend I'll be heading down Mill Ck, I've also hiked the Moak Tr and Deer Ck. It's great spring time country. Only 4 hours and 20 minutes till I get off work.

Dunk, let me know what you think of the Mill Creek downstream trail. I wanted to do Deer Creek trail thois year, love to get any tips from you... I didn't know upstream on Mill wasn't part of the Ishi Wilderness, I remember reading all the info posted right at Mill Creek road crossing at Black Rock. Have Fun!

RE: Hittin' the trail this weekend
From SF you can reach some of the trailheads in about 4 hours. You'll be on dirt forest roads in about 3 1/2 hours.

wanderer, my preference is upstream, after a few miles of downstream you leave most of the pine trees behind and the trail gets rougher and rougher. You can also go further by going upstream, I think about 14 miles as compared to 6 1/2 to 7 miles downstream.

There's a short section of Deer Creek, downstream from where Hwy 32 crosses it, that contains Lower Deer Creek Falls. You can dayhike it or backpack into that stretch but it's a real short section and in about 4 miles comes out onto forest roads. Still, it's worth a visit. I haven't tried the Ishi section of Deer Ck yet, Antelope Ck might also be worth a try as well as Tehama Wildlife Area when it's open.

With all of these hikes, I wouldn't think about trying them in the summer since temps can go over 110*. There are some good swimming holes though.

RE: Hittin' the trail this weekend
I did!

Went and did some fo the Quehanna Trail in central PA. Can't believe it is only <10 miles off I-80, and I was at the trailhead in under 3 hours drive time.

Did some bushwacking, and that was the best part of the hike. LOTS of potential there for off-trail orienteering hiking. I'll definitly go back there again, and again...
