“Well, well, well. As in one of my older threads I stated that in my BSA troop I was cheated out of my position of ASPL (assistant senior patrol leader), but to day it get much better. The elections where held once again. Well let me just state what my leader ship and stuff where before going to this meeting where. : 8 year scout, 4 year patrol leader, 3 year troop guide, 1 year assistant patrol leader, 1 year camp staff, 1 trek to Philmont, 1 trek to Rollins Pond High Adventure base (a canoe trek for 7 days), Life scout (1 from eagle, I have 2.5 merit badges to go), 1 religious reward, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and veteran achievement awards, Washington crossings medal ( I?m a very high class scout). So where was I in my b1tching and moaning? Oh? I was about to tell you, that now I have NO LEADER SHIP POSITIONS AT ALL! I?m just a regular scout. I hold nothing. I was basically striped of my positions. I made up the troop treasurer position 2 years ago when no one was collecting dues, and then my leaders put that position up for voting, and now a tenderfoot scout has it (the little f**ck can?t even count to 10). I lost my troop guide, and my patrol leader positions all in one night. This is so wrong. I?m not made that this looks really bad on an eagle application, but I?m pissed because this is an insult to my pride that I once had. If they only would have elected me they would have gone hiking so often that they would no what hit them.”

Rollins Pond...what a GREAT place. I've camped there many times and have taken many canoe trips originating there. Started camping there when I was a kid with my family and went a couple of years ago. It's a beautiful in the 'daks!”

“Ice Tea, before you read below, take a breath and know this comes from a friend, it isn't sharp shooting or ment to be mean.

Two things I learned a long time ago, and you will have to come to grips with.

1. Motivation and pride are something that come from within. I have learned this from being a leader and from being the follower. As a leader I can do everthing in my power to instill motivation and self image, but it won't take unless the person I'm working with finds it themselves. I have also worked for some very incompetent people that do not appreciate what I do, so in those cases I cannot allow them to take my dignity away. If I do, then it is my fault. If I go around letting others opinions of me determine my self worth, then I will never be the person I should, I will be the person that others want me to be. OK, lets break this down - don't kiss ass, do what you know is right, always.

2. Self assesment. In cases where I have not been asked to take a position I thought I deserved, or when I wasn't up to standard and someone let me know it, I sit back and calmly reflect on why (usually on a hike). I see your initial post and the negativity in it, and all the reasons why others were not as deserving as you. BUT, instead of focusing on them, focus on yourself. Don't take this wrong, don't dwell on yourself and your problems, this causes depression. Ask yourself 5 basic questions:

1) What am I trying to do?

2) What am I actually accomplishing?

3) What am I doing wrong?

4) What am I doing right?

5) What do I need to change?

Usually I find there is something I could work on in myself that will make me better, because we all have flaws.

I hope you don't think I ain't on your side. I just hate to see negativity in anyone.

Treu Story:
I had a soldier I recently kicked out of the Army. He kept saying he was being treated unfairly, that he was one of the best soldiers in the unit, and we weren't giving him any chances. I had to point out to him that:
a. The Army expects people to be on time.
b. They expect people to obey orders.
c. The don't like drunk drivers.
d. The really hate unregisterd firearms being carried by soldiers.
e. And they get pretty pissed when a soldier steals from fellow soldier.
f. They get extreamly perturbed at failure to pay just debts, especially when they get to $30,0000
g. And they take an extreamly dim view of people doing cocain when handeling hevy machineguns and explosives.

Now, all that I said is true. What was the point. If a person could overlook such obvious personal flaws as these, then you can see how easy it is for us with minor imperfections to overlook them while others do not.

Ice, you have it in you to be great. You either learn from this and drive on, or you wallow in hate and self pitty. Take the high road dude. Drive on!”

Don't take this the wrong way - you know I have stuck up for you before, even though I don't know you well - but you are obviously very smart and ambitious, and I wonder if this has alienated you somewhat from your fellow scouts. At times, people like yourself appear to be arrogant and/or know-it-all even without intending to be, just because they really know that they are right and others are wrong. I sometimes have to be very careful when speaking to my co-workers so I won't come across like I think they are stupid (because they are being stupid, but telling them that is not a good way to make friends and influence people). Maybe you could talk to some of the other scouts and try to find out why they are doing this and what you could do to change their minds.”

So what you ain't voted Mr Congeniality, point for you to focus on ......... GET OVER IT NOW .......... not 2 years from now. What 2.5 merit badges do you lack? Knock'em the **** out bro! Complete the other nec requirements and GET THAT DANG EAGLE SCOUT!!! I cannot at the moment recall if Eagle Scout requires some leadership demonstrations, but if that's the case, deal with that AFTER your other requirements are fully completed! Don't bow yourself so low as to come on here with blasphemous threads, be a bigger man than that. Think of your bigger picture ........ do ya hike?....yes ...... are you gonna get Eagle Scout? ..... yes! Beyond that my man, nothing else matters in Ice Tea's big picture.

“You need at least 6 months of leadership for Eagle don't you? Does Troop Guide count? Is there a leadership position open you can get without being elected? (Quartermaster??). Your Scoutmaster is responsible for helping Scouts stay on track for Eagle. In our troop, this would not have happened. Do you re-elect leadership mid-year? If not, recommend it.

Get that Eagle. Let us know what happens.

BTW. I dropped out with less than three merit badges for Eagle and always regreted it. Unfortunately, I didn't have anyone tell me that Eagle meant anything outside of Scouting. I found that out later. My son was what we call here a "cardiac Eagle." He finished his requirements just before his 18th birthday and actually had his Board of Review after his birthday. His Eagle Court-of-Honor was one week after he graduated from High School.”

“when I was 17 I did my eagle service project under an old scout master. It was approved by him but before I could complete it he retired. The New scout master didn't feel it was enough when he came in. We had some words and I never went back. That has got to be one of the biggest regrets I've ever had. I had enough badges to get all my palms too and all I needed to do was suck up to that dickhead and get whatever he wanted done. I have since learned that I will not stop doing something, going somewhere, or being who I am because of one person or any one group of people. These guys are right! do whatever it takes to get that badge, and then screw'em. 10 years from now you'll be able to say, "I AM an Eagle Scout", not " I WAS ALMOST an Eagle Scout" and then rastionalize your position.”

Accept the fact that you didn't get a job you wanted and you will learn one of life's great lessons. Be stoic, patient, and good natured about this and in the end the job may just come your way next year.”

It's okay to get upset, it's normal and only human. Something would be wrong with you if you didn't! But the key is, what do you do with that energy? Harness it for the better good, that's what I've learned. Turn it into something positive. Not an easy task, but it's more than possible.
