Also, anyone noticed that Target is now selling a line of Eddie Bauer camping gear? Seems to be fairly high quality and reasonably priced. They have a "two-man" tent at 5.5 lbs. for $129.

“I saw this somewhere the other day (that Target would carry a Eddie Bauer line) but hadn't seen what the line of goods was going to be. Clothing next?”

“My local Target has a buttload of Coleman gear, and has almost as much gear (as a whole) as the local Dick's Sporting Goods.

I know people rip on this inferior gear...but that's the stuff I started with.”

“I hate Dick's sporting goods. They ran my old employer " All About Sports" into the ground by nickle and diming every item and then once they had cornered the market raised everything back up. Dick's does not have crap other than the usual little knick-nacks and the employees are stupid and also you can't order speciality items thru them apparently like you could at my old locally owned store. We have a Benchmarks, a outfitter store, but they are to darn pricey. We also have a new huge Bass Tracker shop that has lots of goods. I really wish a REI would come closer to town.”

“I think coleman stoves and lanterns are well made and last a long time. I have a dual burner white gas coleman stove that's 30 years old and still works fine. Also, a dual mantle lantern that's the same age and works great. My Peak 1 stove was always reliable and seems sturdy too in 8 years of use. I don't know about their other gear, but the lanterns and stoves lasted for me.”

“So why are they changing their name ?
It is not the very best gear available - but a step up from the car camping stuff. It is a well known name brand - some companies pay 100's of thousands of dollars in advertising for name recognition like that and they are throwing it out the window ?
I have an old Peak 1 coleman fuel stove that I frequently use - It is quite heavy compared to some other stoves - but I like it anyway! I also have an old Peak 1 2-man (Ha !) tent that I take when I solo (5.5 pounds) - I bought them along time ago - when I was young - but these two items have served me well for many years.
I hope they don't lower their quality even further after this name change.
Furthermore "Exponent" is a stupid name !”

Where is this mercandise carried? I looked am my local Wal-Mart last week and didn't see anything. The website doesn't show that anyone really carries it.

I could check target easy enough. Maybe someone has reviewed it somewhere.”

If that link doesn't work just search the threads for Peak 1 Cobra. Also there was at one time a Coleman version of this tent (the mountaineer, maybe?). None of these at my local Wal-Marts but I think they can be found on the Wal-Mart website. Same tent different label as far as I can tell.”

Does the Exponent Inyo 2 have alumninum or fiberglass poles?

Same question for the Peak 1 cobra (supposedly the same tent)?”

“Phil, my Cobra has 1 aluminum pole. I have not seen the Inyo 2, does the website say that it has fiberglass poles?”

“The Coleman site says "aluminum" poles on the Inyo 2. However, in surfing around trying to find the Cobra, some sites said fiberglass. I think it was a mistake.”

“I held the inyo 2 in my little hands today at The Sports Authority... $89.00.....it is the exact thing as the Cobra (i have a cobra) except it is tan/buff color (wish i had that instead of the dark green Cobra) anyway....the only difference besides color, is that the aluminum poles have some sort of tie down strap like the fly...in addition to inserting them into the grommets at the ground......i like the Cobra a lot.....again...the inyo 2 is a better color.
for 89 bucks....it is a good deal....it withstood windy, thunderstorms in wyoming and heavy rains in georgia and kept me dry...and ya gotta love the all mesh walls on those clear nights... i have never camped in snow...so, i cannot say how it would do in that kind of weather....”

“I have used my Cobra in the snow and heavy rain on MT Rainier and love it.

The only small problem is the bottem area where your feet are can get wet in rain. This is has never caused my ANY discomfort, but it is worth noteing if you afraid of a little wet on the OUTSIDE of your bag.

“heh...i am short, so my feet never get to the bottom, but, it is true that in a heavy rain, the fly can droop onto the mesh and if ya touch it...well...ya know that gig in any tent.”

“I have the Cobra, and for those of you who will trek the Firey Gizzard, I will show you the solution to the wet foot problem. 2 loops of Light nylon sewn to the fly and guyed out from the tent solves the sagging problem. I would not ordinarily use this approach, but since the Cobra is not a free standing tent anyway, the extra stake and 1 line is no big deal...ever fly a common kite? rig the line as if it's flying the fly...and stake the free end to the ground...greatly reduces the sag, and keeps the feet dry.”

“Fontana gear shop in downtown Madison, WI, had a half-dozen Peak 1 Xtreme cartridge stoves on the clearance shelf yesterday if anyone in that area is looking for a stove.”

“Globe-mart has the Inyo 2 for 84.95 and the Cobra for 74.95.

There is a slightly used Cobra on eBay right now. Bidding was at $15.50 when I looked with a day or two to go.

I'm seriously thinking about the Inyo 2. For only $84, it isn't much of a risk.”

“Phil, if I was choosing between the Inyo 2 and the new Cobra, I'd get the Cobra just because it's ten dollars cheaper. I don't see any difference in the two tents. Did you notice something I missed?”

“Apparently, the differences are the color (which i-am-om says she wishes she had the lighter Inyo) and some tab design with the pole. I am not exactly sure what.

I think I would prefer the lighter color.

the lighter color would make it lighter in the tent if it is raining and you want to read......it is personal preference i guess, the cobra fly is dark green. One of the reasons i got this tent is because it is all mesh. i like that sleeping under stars thing....bug free, And if i have to use the fly because of weather, color doesnt matter much at night, when sleeping, but if it is daytime i would rather have a lighter color fly...i get claustrophobic......for that reason, i would get the lighter color....
the new pole tie down is probably a good thing too, check the description thru phils link. I didnt notice any problem with the cobra, but little improvements cant hurt i guess.”

“I ordered the Inyo from Globalmart the other day and it has been shipped (ETA 4/17). I am looking forward to getting it. I may modify it to keep the fly from sagging into the netting at the foot. I will have an outing or two to test it out before the llama hike.

All my other tents are free-standing. I won't be able to set this one up in the living room as easily to play with it.

OM - In my other tents, they have a lot less netting and can help keep in the heat. Does the fly on this tent retain heat OK in cold weather?”

“Phil, i have never camped in snow, but at 11-12k feet out in wyoming and utah, i was quite warm when i had the fly all zipped down around the tent. I have to admit, i like sleeping "open"...not zipping the fly flaps down....only do that in the rain......i just do not like the enclosed feeling of that...but if on rare occasion i wake up cold, when i zip the fly flaps down...it usually gets quite warm to me.”
