Just an interesting Email I got!
I hope this turns out...I had to do alot of cleaning up of it, but it's pretty interesting1

Subject: Coke or Water?
WATER
We all know that water is important but I've never seen it written down like this before. 75% of Americans are chronically
dehydrated. (Likely applies to half the
world population.)
> >
In 37% of Americans, the thirst
mechanism is so weak that it is
often mistaken for hunger.
> >
Even MILD dehydration will slow down
one's metabolism as much
as 3%.

One glass of water shut down midnight
hunger pangs for almost
100% of the dieters studied in a
U-Washington study.

Lack of water, the #1 trigger of
daytime fatigue.

Preliminary research indicates that 8
- 10 glasses of water a
day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of
sufferers.
> >
A mere 2% drop in body water can
trigger fuzzy short-term
memory, trouble with basic math, and
difficulty focusing on the computer
screen
or on a printed page.
> >
Drinking 5 glasses of water daily
decreases the risk of colon
cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of
breast cancer by 79%, and one
is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

Are you drinking the amount of water
you should everyday?

Pretty cool facts there Buddur. I never drink soda because of the tooth decay issues, but drink so much water I feel like I'll float away.

The phosphoric acid in sodas (not just Coke) leeches calcium from your system. So, not only are you NOT getting anything good--but you are taking away something that is vital. I am a recovering Diet Pepsi holic. I am a water girl now and drink more than a gallon a day. At work they consider the cost of toilet paper during my annual review. My raises are affected by the cost. And my husband set up our budget like this:

Car Payment

When I was in the fifth grade, we put a tooth in a bottle of Coke and watched it disappear over a period of a few weeks.

I think about that alot when drinking soft drinks. I mostly drink water.

Slightly exaggerated? Any chemistry people here? Is 2.8 a reasonable ph, or would that possibly be slightly fatal? Sounds fishy to ken.

RE: Water vs. Coke...You decide!
2.8 pH isn't that low. That means the acid concentration in coke (actually the H3O concentration) is on the order of 3.17*10^-3 or 0.00317M. Stomach acid is 0.01M HCl and has a pH of 2.

RE: Water vs. Coke...You decide!
So its all crap???

Consider the wisdom or lack thereof of pouring sugar into one's body the way that some of the "Coke" guzzlers do.

Did you ever notice how SO many 300 lb people are waddling around with a "Big Gulp".

These suckers are feeding an industry which is every bit as insidious as the tobacco industry.

I wonder if the reason that "Coke" guards its "formula" so carefully is for reasons similar to the tobacco industry's.

There may be more than just the sugar(corn sweetener) in that sh!t to ensure addiction and greater and GREATER sales.

I see soda ADDICTS as zombies wondering this great wasteland of our's in search of the next bottle to SUCK ON!!!

The definition of SUCKERS....some poor addicted slob slurpin' down another Big Dew!

In the world of crime I have learned some fundamentals....from TV!
In order to commit a crime the perpetrator must have;
Motive
Opportunity

If the Anti-Coke forces are lying(lying is the "crime" in this instance) what be their MOTIVE?
Would it be profit?
Hell no, its more like self-righteousness which is not exactly a "crime".

Well, in the case of televangelists, I DO believe that self-righteousness IS a CRIME!
That is a matter for another thread though......like a "Religious Sqabbling Thread".

Who, in the case of misleading the public about the TERRRIBLE effects of SODA ADDICTION, has the MOTIVE here???
Again, much like the tobacco industry, the Soda Industry HAS the motive to lie and mislead the public......THE PROFIT MOTIVE!~!~!~!

Next crime, please.....Oooo, Oooo, how about ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION???

hey Tom, WHAT ARE YOU ON THAT REALLY GETS YOU GOING SO YOU USE A LOT OF CAPS??!?!?!?!?

Here's the way I figure it (I know you all can barely wait to hear this, the rationalization!): I know drinking Pepsi is an addiction. I figure it's a lesser one. No worse than coffee drinkers (and I have never touched coffee in my life)..... don't smoke (never touched a cigarette in my life).... don't do drugs (never done drugs in my life, not even to not inhale!)... OK, I drink a few beers and margaritas once in a blue moon. And typically do not drink to oblivion.

Ohhhhhhh... I better admit..... I live for junk food, too. Pick your addiction!

Saw a study (no I don't have the cite, it was in a Sunday paper)recently that found a connection between the higher incidenc of obesity in today's children (and all of the bad things that go along with that, including early onset puberty), was directly connected to significantly higher consumption of carbonated/sweetened beverages ie Coke.

My 5 year old has never tasted the stuff, and WON"T anytime soon.

RE: Water vs. Coke...You decide!
the way I figure it, this stuff can't be good for living organisms, so it would kill off bacteria in your mouth. I wonder if there was ever a study on this. Too bad the sugar provides something for the new bacteria to eat. Can bacteria digest nutrasweet? If not, then Diet Coke could prevent tooth decay.

In the Coke vs. Pepsi war, I'm a Coke man myself. Despite a 5th grade Sunday school teacher doing that ol' voodoo of pooring a saucer full and then putting raw hamburger in it to show us how it got "cooked, just like your insides are getting cooked!" Was that what Pink Floyd meant by "A Saucer Full of Secrets"?

Is Vernor's ginger ale okay? That stuff is the best ginger ale of all, and my mom used to heat it up and have us drink it when we were sick. Midwesterners should know Vernor's, especially around southern Michigan (plant was/is? in Detroit -- had a glass wall so you could see the workings).

For a scout project once we made sassafras rootbeer from scratch. Darned if we didn't let it set to long to get a fizz and it turned a bit "hard." Yum, that's my kind of merit badge.

My wife use to drink a couple diet pepsis a day and suffered from chronic headaches. She went to one doctor who told her if she enjoyed the pepsi she should drink one when she felt a headache coming on. Didn't help.

Another doctor tole her to quit drinking pepsi because it was hard for the kidneys to process. Her headaches disappeared almost immediately. She has tested this a couple times and always gets headaches when she drinks pop. Now I get headaches because she gripes about not being able to drink soda.

Something to think about for you addicts.

Coincidently saw a piece in Cook's Illustrated last night on cooking a ham. They played with the "Coke" as a brine soaking substitute method. Said it was delicious. Consulting with a chem professor from UMASS:

Coke has a ph of 3.3.

(In the original stats from the beginning of this thread is was quoted that Phosporus, an ingredient of Coke has a ph of 2.8. While that may be true, the overall ph of Coke is 3.3 (or at least that's what Cook's consultant said)

Ok, here are the facts. Since reading these posts I was sort of alramed cause I drink at least 2 diet Dr. Peppers a day, so I wanted to find out for my self. I searched over several sites about Coke and its effect, and all of them said the same thing: it's harmless. Most of those stories about it are just urban legend. Orange Juice has more ph acid in it than coke does. Here are some links, read up.

Pekka, the Vernors bottling plant is gone from Detroit. They tore it down about 12 years ago.

Have any of you heard of the book "Fast Food Nation"? I bet you all would be amazed and never eat another McDonald's hamburger again! Hyper has been telling me about it lately. McDonalds is the largest buyer of beef in the world. They process it soooo much that when they're done they have to add beef flavoring so it'll taste like a hamburger! Appetizing eh?

I like drinking Coke. Pepsi tastes like flat Coke. D.P. and Root beers are good too.

I like that battery acid taste that Coke provides. Drinking to much caffeine/sugar will give anybody a headache I believe, and will also set you up for that late afternoon energy crash.

Tom T. it is good to know you get all your info from the TV, I guess that explains it!!!
