Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (Marc h)View MessagesPee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “On the second to last page of ?backpacker Magazine (March 2001)? is an article about using a pee bottle, to avoid leaving the warm tent in a down poor. So my question is, How many of you use them. Then my next question is how many of you subscribe to backpacker mag?” 4:46:34 PM 3/22/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “No pee bottle use here. Do use them when caving though, pee in a cave messes up the caves system. I do not subscribe to backpker, but pick one on pretty reg. basis.” 4:58:51 PM 3/22/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “I do both. I would highly reccomend the first and the second is nice to have in the bathroom at home(but not really as informative as I would wish).” 5:01:53 PM 3/22/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “I think I'm going to try it on my next camp out” 5:08:58 PM 3/22/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Have used pee bottles (empty water bottle) on a couple of trips. Cold/snow Rain. Kinda hysterical. Got to make all sorts of crude jokes iwth my camping bud. Whatever cracks you up at 2:30 am.” 5:26:36 PM 3/22/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “I never used one, but I can see the value of one for cold winter camping. I read some posts on the subect on an AMC thread. One piece of advice several mentioned was, make sure that you can tell your pee bottle from your water bottle in the dark when you are half asleep and fumbling around in the dark. ThI think some people have learned that from experience.)” 5:34:38 PM 3/22/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “I use a pee bottle in the tent - grew up using one in the fishing boat. 22 oz Gatorade bottle is standard fare. I heard one guy recommend sleeping with it when winter camping - "keeps you warm like a hot water bottle" he said Not in my sleeping bag, Jack” 5:56:08 PM 3/22/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “I subscribe to Backpacker, but I never use a pee bottle. I had to pee in a bottle in the hospital for 29 days when I had a bone marrow transplant and it brings back bad memories.” 6:11:42 PM 3/22/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “I've liked the idea since I first heard of it, but I still have yet to do it. Can't get myself to taint a Nalgenes that I'd use sooo much more often for drinking water. Last weekend I woke up and had to go. Well, I unzipped my sleeping bag, shimmied over to the edge of my groundcloth, stuck my hip out as far as i could and went. The snow soaked it right up. Chalk up another good reason to use a tarp. My Dad use to make my brother and I pee in a milk jug when we were younger and going to out Aunt's house. Mom, or a dump, got pullover priority. Can't wait till I get to make my kids do it =8o” 6:13:38 PM 3/22/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “I subscribe to Backpacker, but not the pee bottle thing. Yes, it sounds great, but that's just one more thing I gotta carry. My pack is small enough as it is. Sure would be handy though. I wonder if anybody has a pee bottle horror story, like: I was peeing in my bottle and shivering from the cold and, well, I lost my grip (on the bottle or otherwise) and spilled it everywhere.” 6:23:42 PM 3/22/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “thats the one thing that is holding me back now.” 6:28:14 PM 3/22/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Search the threads, a few pee bottle disasters.” 6:37:16 PM 3/22/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “I subscribe to Backpacker magazine. It is OK. I like the gear reviews and food related articles the most. Sometimes the describe a hike I would like to try. Haven't used a pee bottle. I rarely camp in cold or rainy weather, so it's not a big deal. (I think I will save the next gatorade bottle I see, however.)” 7:11:25 PM 3/22/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Don't subscribe to backpacker. Have used a pee bottle - it's actually on our gear list for a bike trek I do. We camp in a tent city with few trees and porta potties seem far away in the night.” 7:34:29 PM 3/22/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “I use a pee bottle (gatorade) when its snowing or really cold. Never had any problems, or accidents. I subscribe to Backpacker. I've gotten good trip ideas from some issues.” 7:42:56 PM 3/22/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Yes to both. Will not be renewing. Pee bottle very handy when cold or buggy!” 7:50:42 PM 3/22/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Been a subscriber since '96. I've learned a lot by reading it, and reading old ones again. Some things I find entertaining. Some elementary. Some useful and informative. I suppose if I were the Editor, I might try to include something for everybody, too. Pee Bottle: For short hikes & weekenders, probably not a bad idea, though get yer skull & cross bones ready. Longer hikes, & BP... I'm wet on the inside, I can tolerate a little wet on the outside (rain). I don't (yet) camp in the winter, so it's not that big an issue for me. Yet.” 8:17:42 PM 3/22/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “One of the plus's of being a male!!! I don't pack a pee bottle. If I'm lazy and tired, which is quite often when on the trail, I normally will hang it out the other door of the tent. If I am tarpin or sleepin under the stars when it is cold out, I will stand up in the bag and hop away from the sleeping area undo the zipper and just go. I did that in front of my crew boss out in Clearwater N.F. and he could not believe his eyes. I said it was to freakin cold and early and he said you have a point. You just have to avoid the extra shaking. BP mag, I have paid for the sub. every couple of years but mostly I will either buy it or just read it at the store. It just doesn't cut it for me anymore.” 1:24:35 AM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “I don't see the need really. I never get up and go at night at home so I never need to on the trail. It's all about bladder capacity and control, and not drinking much before bed time.” 2:26:15 AM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Both. Wish I had thought of it before our extremely we trip to Cumby last September.” 8:09:30 AM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Wet, dang it, I meant to say wet.” 8:21:17 AM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Always carry one in winter. I use an old vitamin bottle, painted yellow, and is shaped differently than any other bottle I have. Never had an accident. Subscribe, but wish the gear reviews were more comprehensive.” 9:37:59 AM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “I haven't done the pee bottle thing cause I'm usually not that lazy but when I am lazy I have a great bladder so I just hold it til wake up time.As for the BP rag I subscribe not because I think it's a great rag totally but I usually get something out of each issue.” 9:52:58 AM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Yes to both! If you camp in the winter where I go, a pee bottle is a must. Duct tape the pee bottle so you can make sure you are gonna pee in the right one. The only horror story I can think of is catching a cramp trying to contort myself to go while in a bivy.” 10:08:56 AM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Yes I subscribe. I'd rather freeze my @$$ off than take a chance at a pee bottle disaster.” 10:29:10 AM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Tundra - Likewise. Nasty cramp in my hip just as I was kneeling to go.” 10:58:41 AM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Guys, make sure the bottle opening is large enough. To much shaking to get the last drops out and something may inflate and get stuck. That would be a good disaster story. Heck, just get a catheter and run a long tube outside. No bottle here but I am working on that pee stand up thing. (.)(.) | ) . ( ( Y ) 12:06:12 PM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Do subscribe to BP, but wish there was something better out there. Any suggestions? Nope on the bottle, tried it, had a small disaster, won't be doing it again!” 12:17:43 PM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “You're a character mtn gal. And put some freakin clothes on, please! ;^)” 12:21:08 PM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Mtn Gal, it should not necessary to remove all of your clothing to utilize the bottle, and in any case, it is usually done in private.” 12:34:08 PM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “This was discussed a few months back also. I believe it was Nigal's suggestion to not pee in your own bottle, but your hiking companions bottle, when he was sleeping!!!!!” 3:36:09 PM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Sounds like Nigal. :-) (No offense intended Nigal... ah, you'll take it as a compliment, anyway... right?) Anyway.... yes to BP magazine (for the last five years) and yes to PB. I hadn't thought of it when camping with my son about 5 years ago in the Loess Hills in January (minus 7) and I didn't enjoy putting on boots, etc. twice in one night after drinking three hot cocoas before bed! Now, use a wide-mouth (hehe) gatoraid bottle wrapped in bright red duct tape. (You not only want to SEE the skull & cross-bones, you want to FEEL the difference... hate to get a sip of Yucky Gatoraid... or pee in the Ice Tea. Funny that Ice Tea started this thread, isn't it? :)” 5:37:58 PM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “I don't want to deal with a bottle of urine.” 7:54:11 PM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “I second bacpac?s simple yet very succinct comment. You do have a way with words, man.” 8:07:12 PM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “I just got my last issue and now I'm being bombed with renewal adds. As far as a pee bottle. I always wish I had one during the Winter but so far I always forget till it's too late. It gets cold out there at night! One day I'll take me a pee bottle and not have to crawl outta that warm bag.” 8:17:22 PM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Ok. So you been sippin' copious tea n' 151 concoctions so anticipate the inevitable : A. you will have the ferocious need to leave the tent immediately after zipping-in for the nite B. if you're over forty, you'll have to do so again before slipping through hypnopompia (semi-sleep) into regenerative slumber, and C. ain't no "bottle" gonna contain the prodigious effluvium, so D. park yer booties near yer head and, one can experience a kind of epiphanic reverie while butt-naked in the howling winds.” 8:46:38 PM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Oh yeah, look forward to receiving my BP Mag. But don't let yourself succumb to the consciousness that they are the FINAL WORD apropos gear. Some of their endorsements are hyperbolically outrageous.” 8:50:52 PM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Obviously Alphapackrat needs the extra room for his Thesaurus.” 10:06:07 PM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “One day I learned 3 new words just from reading Alphapackrat's posts. But now I need a computer AND a dictionary to get my trail talk fix.” 10:48:24 PM 3/23/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “ Wha Da Fa?”2:04:03 AM 3/24/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Didn't mean to start no commotion 'bout sophomoric use of language. Ok, I was pretty toasted last evening. But I definitely eschew use of a thesaurus (once knew an Eng. prof... the phoniest and most pretensious b----rd in the world... who pronounced it "tess-uh-riss")unless writing a novel or sumpin' (ain't done that in coupla years). Even then, I'll turn to ol' Roget more for ideas than for words. At any rate, I deserve to be assaulted with adjective-torture. Howz about if for penance I listen to an interview with Don King and read the biography of Yogi Berra? Y'knowhatahmsayin'?” 1:30:33 PM 3/24/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Alphapackrat, Keep using the big words. You may make us all a little bit smarter by the end of the day. In addition, I?m 15 3/4ths. BacPac, Next time your camping and its 5 below 0, hailing, wind gust up to 30 mph (is that realistic?)(If not I?m just giving an example), and you got to take a leek at 2 in the morning. You?ll wish you didn?t have to get out of the tent, but then again its not my problem. Its yours. On another note, don?t degrade any one because you don?t know what they said, on a count of you lacking vocabulary skills,.” 2:46:40 PM 3/24/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Tea, I have been in numerous situations where I expected to hear my urine to clink when it hit the ground. I can only think of two instances when a urine bottle may have been a better option, but I was very young at the time. I think Alphapacker's shtick is refreshing, My comment was intended to be humorous, not degrading.” 6:11:07 PM 3/24/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “For the Alpha thing, okay, I guess I'm to tired to get any jokes right now. Sorry for the inconvenience. That?s what my Assistant Scout master always says ?you know is cold, if it freezes before it hits the ground?.” 6:21:47 PM 3/24/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “I carry a pee bottle when I hunt. On the zeleski hike in dec I took my tarp, of course I had to piss at 3am. It was 20 or so, I really didnt want to get up.I rolled over, unzipped and shazam! no muss no fuss. Damn I love being a man LOL! BTW I hate the idea of having a bottle of urine just waiting to stink up and soak my gear.” 6:22:54 PM 3/24/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Well you empty it out in the morning. Duhh lol” 6:39:00 PM 3/24/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “You best hope you screw the cap on good and tight at 3am, and have a real steady hand while opening the cap. My aim is poor at 3am I have difficulty hitting the toilet (ask joy) let alone the hole on a water bottle.” 6:42:09 PM 3/24/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “Does any one have a pee bottle at there computer desk. I have a friend that told me he uses a peebottle instead of getting off his ass and walking to the bathroom. This came up in a discution about the pee bottle and hiking.” 10:31:50 PM 6/06/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “I don't want to deal with a bottle of urine. Why do you think God gave you a dick? Oops sorry, Tea. I know that question can be confusing at your age.” 10:36:49 PM 6/06/01 RE: Pee Bottle and Backpacker Magazine (March) “I must admit, the last time I used a bottle to pee in it was because I was deployed and we were at risk of detection by a people sniffer...sensors that detect urine and ammonia. I can't say it was a fun thing to do, carrying a warm bottle around, and I highly recommend a different bottle shape and color than say a nalgene, mixing them up in the dark would be a nasty experience when you're thirsty....” 9:19:54 AM 6/07/01
