flashback “my sons dad moved to the bahamas and left him a box of old pictures and slides.....among them, i found some slides of many backpacking trips, including the very first one.....To Spence Field on the AT (in Tenenssee) from Cades Cove via the Anthony Creek trail. It was October 1973!!!!!! we were all in college and came up from florida to get high in the mountains..anyway....i thought my lungs would explode and i was going to die...those ill conditioned flatlanders of us (mainly the girls..) would take three steps and cry...take three steps and moan...heh...but we all made it and it was worth every agonizing step for me...and that was just the start of mountain wanderlust.....when i think of the gear i carry now ...it is hilarious to see these pics...check out this link to see my "gear".....granny boots for gosh sakes!!! hah.. hope the link works...my first time flashback” 10:30:02 PM 3/24/01 RE: flashback “hmm, well, that link takes you to the manage albums spot, guess ya have to hit the view tab....i am so html illiterate..sorry” 10:35:00 PM 3/24/01 RE: flashback “Kewl, tone! gooooood times! I wasn't yet hiking in those days, but my buds and I did plenty of car camping in those areas. Same reasons, too. "If it weren't for flashbacks, I'd have no memory at all." ~A commedian whose name I don't remember.” 10:40:40 PM 3/24/01 RE: flashback “Neat, I wish I had pics from back then. My niece asked me the other day where all my bell bottom jeans were, she wanted to wear them.” 10:57:35 PM 3/24/01 RE: flashback “What a little hippy hotty. Opps, did I say that out loud? ;^)” 12:09:45 AM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “Awesome pics!” 12:26:34 AM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “Very groovy pics! Thanks for sharing.” 12:41:57 AM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “Too funny......... great pages! Say have you seen my 70s shot? It's on Phil's page. Scroll through till you find it. I had HUMONGOUS bellbottoms!! LOL!! I'm gonna attempt a link. Let's see how bad I screw up!!! The '70s and More” 12:49:10 AM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “WOO HOO...... it appears to work!!” 12:50:30 AM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “Wow OM, those pics from the early 70s ... you can almost see Woodstock from some of them.” 1:13:06 AM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “Hey lizs I see you were in the YCCs. I was in the California Conservation Corps (CCC) from 78-79. Where was your YCC camp?” 1:15:56 AM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “Om, thanks for the tour. Beautiful hair.” 2:09:55 AM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “i-am-om - Super groovy pics, I love 'em!” 2:40:55 AM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “Right on, Ms.OM! I had one of those groovy blaze-orange packs also. Thanks for the memories.” 2:43:29 AM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “OK, since lizs chimed in also, here are my 50s-60s-70s pictures I kinda like the nerdy one of me at Yosemite. You did't get many girls wearing a pith helmet in the 60's. Also, curly hair and sideburns are great when you have hair (70s). Check out the second picture here...definitely 70's with bell-bottoms, wide lapels. My daughter is into vintage clothing and thinks its kinda cool.” 2:44:47 AM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “Great pictures Phil! Yours too OM and Liz! I'm going to have to break out my Great Western Tour of 1975 pictures now.” 7:57:21 AM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “good ones Phil and Lizs.... i was hoping to see some ole hiking classics come out of the woodwork here!” 8:39:07 AM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “I use to work at "Flashback - Old time Photos" on the boardwalk of Ocean City, MD in the mid-80's. One of my favorite jobs I ever had!!! (Didn't mean to change the subject)” 11:04:47 AM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “Steve Hiker.......it was the Osborne Nature Center, between Elkader and Strawberry Point, Iowa. Summer of 76. So did you have the same deal as us??? Be there 40 hours a week and get paid for 30, spending the other 10 hours on educational activities?? We were very bad......LOL!! Were pretty concerned with getting a tan, etc. So we'd wear shorts and the regulation blue chambray shirts (with our steel-toed workboots, of course!). Then we started wearing swimsuit tops with the shorts. Man, I had the best tan of my life that summer!!! Then the "establishment" came down on us and we had to go back to full uniform of pants and blue chambray shirts. It sucked!!! LOL!!! We had a campout where I think we all just slept outside overnight in sleeping bags. My morning walk in the huge bellbottoms followed that. We did a lot of trail work...... also torn down an old barn foundation to take the rocks and make a huge cookout fireplace in a big shelter. Also, I remember learning about guns there (OH MY!!) We did target shooting once and I hit 2 of the first 3 plates . What a pro, huh?? Let's hear about some of your Conservation Corps activities. BTW, now it's called Iowa Conservation Corps. I should post some of those shots on my Photopoint page. Most aren't really obviously 70s.” 11:23:39 AM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “And Phil.....TOTALLY ALFALFA!!! ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!” 11:28:20 AM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “lizs - In elementary school kids called me Alfalfa all the time (teasing, of course). The freckles really did it. Sometimes you just have to go with it.” 11:40:37 AM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “Thanks for sharing the pics, OM and Phil! Isn't it amazing to look back and then try to remember when we actually looked like that???? I have some pics from '58 in yellowstone with the bears all over the place and people packed on fishing bridge that I was looking at yesterday. Will scan as soon as I have a chance..got to work on my taxes now...” 12:40:26 PM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “Thanks very much for the pics, all. I've got to keep an eye out for my old Scout pics. Most of my 70s/80s trip photos are slides and my scanner here at the office doesn't have a transparency adapter. But we'll see what we can do. I love sharing this stuff.” 1:52:54 PM 3/25/01 RE: flashback “Lizs, Seems like the YCC was more informal than the California CCC. The CCC was a full-time, one-year program where we were assigned to rural camps in various parts of the state. We lived there 24/7 and there were men's and women's quarters, almost like college. I heard of the YCC ("yacs") but never met anyone in it. My first CCC camp was in the redwoods north of Santa Cruz, at the edge of Big Basin State Park. We spent lots of time building trails and clearing brush in Big Basin. Will never forget those huge, dark redwood forests in the winter. Haunting. Did you fight fires in the YCCs? In the summer I transferred to a "fire camp" near Auburn (Sierra foothills) and we'd get called to fires in various parts of Northern California, mostly cutting fire rings or doing mop up. The really serious front-line stuff however was handled by the CDF (Cal Dept Forestry) guys in bulldozers. Anyone else worked for the YCC or CCC?” 5:17:50 PM 3/25/01
