Yeah.....or Neah???
I like the stuff. Some of my firat memories are of my Grandparents cooking it every morning...the "%100 Whole Grain Old Fasioned" kind, not the instant. And I still like eating it!

I purchased some of the Old Fasioned kind yesterday, and a toasted wheat cereal called "Wheatena" (lots of fiber between the two) to try to concoct a hot camp cereal. Frankly, I think I eat oatmeal for at least one breakfast during every camping trip. In a Zip-Loc Freezer Bag goes brown sugar, cinnamon, dried milk, pinch of salt and break up a Harvest Powerbar in it, then add honey when it's all hydrated...which makes for a good good morning meal.

Been dehydrating fruit lately and tried adding banannas this morning and it turned out freakin' awesome.

Some say that the cardboard that oatmeal comes in has more nutrition that the oatmeal itself, however, last week I heard a fact on CNN Nutrition as to all the health, which there were lots of, benefits of whole oatmeal. Couldn't find it on their website, though.

RE: Oatmeal
I bring the instant packets for my breakfasts. As long as I'm boiling the water for coffee anyway, I might as well have a hot breaky, and the instant packs are quick, easy, and good.

oatmeal is one of my favorite breakfasts. Whenever i need a meal that will fill me up oatmeal it is. Its great on the trail on cold mornings. And I dont get hungry real quick after eating it. Im definatly for oatmeal. And I almost forgot the best part. Its alot cheaper than power bars.

RE: Oatmeal
I think I've had instant oatmeal every breakfast for like the last hundred trips. Sometimes a handful of granola goes in it too.

RE: Oatmeal
I don't eat oatmeal all that often, but on trips nothing beats the instant kind for a convenient hot breakfast.

Dry milk mixed with hot water poured over my favorite granola. It has oatmeal in it. Buddur adds brown sugar, honey, cinnamon and granola bar ? no wonder it taste good. You can?t taste the oatmeal. :)

RE: Oatmeal
I grew up with oatmeal on the trail every morning. My dad was the type that ate for nutrition while on the trail, not flavor. The quicker, the better.

Personally, I have not ate oatmeal on the trail since my dad quit hiking with me, but am leaning towards it again.

As long as I've been backpacking, I've counted oatmeal among my breakfast favorites. Easy to make, easy to flavor, and best of all, it's CHEAP!

RE: Oatmeal
I'll always take either/both instant oatmeal or Cream of Wheat on the trail. Grew up with the actual cooked versions, and it was an easy transfer to the trail for the instant varieties. But Gojo, walnuts? Eeew. Fruit yes, nuts no. But that, most certainly, is just my own twisted predilection.

I'm with you on this one pekka. I hate nuts. Fruit yes. Nuts no. A little honey or some brown sugar, some dried berries or even a bit of apple - and I couldn't be happier.

Re: Instants. The Apples n' Cinnamon and Maple n' Brown Sugar varieties are usually the only ones with natural flavoring (the apple bits are good).

Spam, I have to agree with you about the grits. I'm probably one of four or five northern boys who likes grits. Good stuff Maynard. I am also a big oatmeal fan. It is a great quick and easy hot breakfast. I wouldn't have any problem with just a clif bar and some fruit for breakfast, but I often want somcthing hot.

Thanks, some of you, for the great ideas of what to mix with the oatmeal. I'll give it a shot.

Does anyone else get serious heartburn from granola or oatmeal? Man, if I eat that stuff, I feel like I can spit fire.

One thing I like to do is to bring pancake mix along, and a small container of oil and make pancakes in the morning. When it is berry season, I'll pick some berries and put them in. Yumbilicious! Yeah, it takes some time, but it's good, it's hot, and it's worth it.

I like oatmeal packets also. I add Trader Joe's Tropical Trail Mix which has dried fruit and whole almonds. The dates really add some nice flavor.
