What kind of person are you?
Personally I'm am more of a forest kinda person. I just love being in the middle of a huge forest starring up through the canopy thrying to see the sky. What about everyone else? Mountains, Rivers, Lakes, Wildlife, Solitude, let everyone else know

Overlooks & Waterfalls. I LOVE walking up mountains. Gaining elevation is prolly my biggest kick. I not to big on flat walking or downhills but I'll do it.

In the spring and fall, I'm a red-rock slot canyon cottonwood kind of dude. In the summers, I'm a mountain meadow pine forest alpine vista kind of guy. In the winter, I'm a Jimmy Buffet kind of guy.

I'm a wildlife kinda guy that keeps a camera in the truck and one in the work car because I've missed so many great photo opportunities.I'm also a Preteneder. I'm constantly imagining myself in different situations out in the woods.I think today I would be Daniel Boone! LOL!

RE: What kind of person are you?
I like huge wide open views, especially at high elevation. If the climb to get there is challenging, the better. Other then that I like to go fast, long and hard. I would rather drain myself to get one extraordinary view and have that feeling of accomplishment then poke along looking at the same stuff.

RE: What kind of person are you?
I'm an introspective person. It doesn't matter where I'm hiking, I'll be constantly thinking about all of these deep things. I haven't done any hiking outside the midwest, so I can't say if I prefer the mountains over the forest, etc.

woods wanderer.
My favorite trips are the ones that take me with the trees, rocks and streams, enjoying the flora and fauna along the way; get to camp and then dayhike, canoe, or explore from there. I like to sit in a lean to or on the shore and gaze on a pond, thinking about what I saw along the way, listening to and watching the world around me, and enjoying the beauty, peace and calm of the place I'm in.

As long as it's quiet, that's what I like. I don't like hearing airplanes, motorboats, and especially not people. The sound of my own footsteps is a necessary evil. I like to hear the sounds of the forrest and only the sounds of the forrest.

RE: What kind of person are you?
I love the woods the most and the changing shadows cast by the trees, filled with critters scurring in and out. I love mountains, a hidden valley stream, long lush meadows, rolling hills, water falls and high lofty places with killer views.

Once, if there was a mountain there I just had to climb it to get a look at things from off the top of it, but now I`m content to wander the foot hills and stare up at the mountain tops.

Things change and us right along with it, but I`ve never lost my love for the woods and all things wild.

I like deap evergreen forests with fast flowing rivers and waterfalls.

Deep greens a blues are the colors I choose
Won't you let me go down in my dreams
And rockabye sweet baby James

Now the first of December was covered with snow
And so was the turnpike from Stockbrige to Boston
The Berkshires seemed dream-like on account of that frosting
With ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go

RE: What kind of person are you?
I got into backpacking completely by accident. I booked a trip out west,Colorado, to escape my problems and a friend who backpacks asked to join me - then he asked if I would mind making it a backpacking trip. I couldn't care, I just needed to get away. Each day we busted our butts climbing 13K and 14K mountains. For me since I was not in shape or really prepared for this, it was especially grueling. In the middle of July we had to cross ice bridges and slink along cliffs with 2-3K foot drop only a couple of feet away - and I was afraid of heights. Suddenly, I'd get to what seemed like the roof of the world - 2 1/2 miles up, 30 degrees colder than where we left, seeing lakes that looked like puddles, whole forests that looked like bushes. That feeling of accomplishment, and that trip changed my life. I returned home with a new attitude, that no matter what problems I have, if I try hard enough, push harder when I want to quit, face my fears, I could overcome anything.

So, I'll car camp and do day trips with the kids to enjoy nature, but at least once a year I put that pack on and just absolutely drive myself to my limits, then a bit more - and completely enjoy it.

solitude...
the flowing river, wind-whispering trees, birdsong. I like to just take it all in...like Twiggie said, just sit back and watch and listen.

Nice one, Sunny- the sun shining through the tree-top canopy is almost enough to make one believe there's a heaven. :o)

RE: What kind of person are you?
I miss living on the north shore of the U.P. -- it was the best of both worlds, the vast open vista of Lake Superior in one direction, and the forested hills and rocky ridges/"mountains" in the other, with swift rivers flowing from the latter to the former.

I like islands since they can have both. Isle Royale is my kind of place for that reason -- forest and big water side by side. And tropical/semitropical islands like the Florida Keys touch a deep, sensual nerve. I was born on a tiny Pacific island, so I think I was imprinted with that.

Here in the interior of Northern Wisconsin, I don't get that balance. Few vistas, and hard to find open high ground to get those. But the deep forest is fun to wander.

RE: What kind of person are you?
I love the smell of the forest. Alittle decay, humid Summer morning, rays shining through. Knowing that the air has been "washed" by the growth all around. Birds chirp, the snap of a stick under the foot of some unseen animal, streams that are but trickles most of the year. A dam creating a pool of water so clear, there is no way of gauging its depth. The "blurp" as a native trout takes his meal.

Just smoke some dope and chill out near some water, it won't matter how deep into the woods you are.

To be under the dark green canopy of the northeastern woods, with the sun filtering through the maples, following a mountain brook, loud and restless in it's infancy, scrambling over granite outcrops to views of endless green and beaver ponds, now that's where I want to be.
For dayhiking excitement though, nothing beats running down a dried-up desert canyon river bed with sandstone boulders the size of VW bugs to rock hop all the way down. The closest thing to downhill skiing without the skis or the snow.

I am the why kind of person, never really happy with the answer. It is hard for me to turn back when hiking I always want to see what's around the next bend. over the next hill or where does this go.
Any of you ever think, when out hiking, why this trail is where it's at. What made someone put it here.

RE: What kind of person are you?
I like to be off trail, where you're more likely to run into wolf tracks than bootprints (I dig wolves). But, you can only see those out west or in AK. I've been raised on the 'alpine' balds of the southern appalachians (mostly in Pisgah National Forest) covered in mountain laurel and draped in fog:

Awake at Flower Gap

A dawn breath, heavy with fog
and rolling
out of pine valley lungs
with the majesty of ancient elk
panting into extinct dampness
wipes dew
on june mountain laurel.

Sorry Big Foot. My poetry doesn't rhyme. Oh, Wild Child, you've got really good taste in music. Do you like Neil Young?

Along one of michigans rivers, the rolling hills broken by thickets of tag alder and cedar. The smell of a cool morning in the forest, a cool midday breeze on a hot summer day, then camp on the shore of a lake or bank of a river.

I am in awe of the sandstone, redrock, desert type areas of Southern Utah, Arizona, Nevada but have not had the oppurtunity to really spend alot of time in any of it to know if I prefer it to the hills here in the east. It is, in my opinion, hard to beat a waterfall with a nice pool in a mountain creek or to stand on top of a rock face and view out over a lush green valley of hardwood trees. The Aspen trees in the fall are also a beautiful sight to behold. Sooooo many places, so little time.

I like seeing what is on the otherside ridge or around the bend no matter where. Rarely, do I travel the same path over and over, I much rather blaze or follow a diffrent one.
I like gettin my hands dirty.
I like hillside bowling and skippin stones.
I like "hootin" in the canyon and "yodelin" from the mt.
I like layin unders the stars and walkin by moonlight.
I like the cracklin fire and the parade of shadows .
I like standing on the mt. top to get a birds eye view.
I like making snow angels and sasquatch poses.
I like silence more than the babble of the brook.
I like jumpin game and watchin big birds soar.
I like it all, from my garden to the trail, nature abounds
I just like gettin my hands dirty.

I like rocks! Took me awhile to realize they would draw me (others seemed to notice first and then filled me in)...

but from the 100-400 ft. bluffs and ravines around my home and the Midwest.... to a perch high atop the Rocky Mountains.... to being overwhelmed by radiation-red sunset in the canyons and plateaus of southern Utah (and let's not forget Monument Rocks, standing like sentinels in the flat west of Kansas) -- GIMME ROCKS!!!

(and no, I don't even climb rocks...... well, I do "play" on them......)

OK, I am partial to aspen and white-barked trees, too...... and the "no man's land" of the rolling Nebraska sandhills..... BUT ROCKS RULE!!!!

RE: What kind of person are you?
I love it all!!!
I love the dense mixed conifer forests , the smell of a Jeffery pine that has been warmed by the sun and the butterscotch smell that fills the air.

I stand in awe when I reach the top of a high mountain pass or peak, looking at the vast wilderness below
puts everything into perspective and I realize just how insignificant I really am in the sceme of things ...not much more than a little spec on the Earth.

I am amazed at the mirror like images on high mountain lakes in the early mornings just before sunrise.

Viewing wildlife in the wild is always a pleasure and I look for every opportunity.

High mountain meadows and their delicate beauty are so peaceful.

It's hard to choose just one thing....
I LIKE IT ALL!

I love the challenge of finding where you are. Map or no map.

Exploring new experiences - plant, animal, life.

Peaceful, yet alive views --- as simple as a tree amongst a forest.

Friends or acquaintences who strive to explore and socialize with each other.

The best is being alone... and able to think at your own pace whether it is in the mountains, forests, beaches or prairie.

All have a tremendous effect on my heart.

Sorry for the poetry. Too much stress in regular life to be more than myself leads me to explore the things that mean the most to me.
