All computer whizzes...I need help!! “I know this isnt backpacking related but.... Ever since I downloaded Netscape 6 I have been having trouple opening things saved from the web..backgrounds for web pages, etc Instead of the normal page looking icon it is the N icon from Netscape..any way when I try to open it an error message comes up and says it cant be opened but it opens anyway..and some times it locks my computer up. I tried uninstalling it but it was still saved as I described above What I want to know is where do I go to change how these files are saved?” 6:00:47 PM 4/01/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “Mine did that too and Cindy Lu talked me through it and to a place that saves stuff like that. She told me how to remove `em and it seems to have helped mine. I wish I could help you, but I was lost the whole time she led me through it. Good Luck!” 6:06:31 PM 4/01/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “Thanks anyway bigfoot..maybe I can capture Skiracer long enough to get him to help me..” 6:27:37 PM 4/01/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “Some one faild to tell you that netscape SUCKS ASS!!! Get internet Explore.” 6:38:10 PM 4/01/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “I have IE and Netscape..I tried uninstalling Netscape but after that nothing would open.. Heres the error message: Cannot find the file C\my documents... ( or one of its components) Make sure the path and file name are correct and that all required libraries are available” 6:51:37 PM 4/01/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “How did you uninstall Netscape? What Operating System are you using? Windows 9x, ME, 2000, XP or a beta of Whistler? Did you go into Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and then select Netscape from a list? If you did not uninstall it this way, I would suggest reinstalling Netscape 6 and then uninstalling using the method described above. It may not work, though...Netscape's unistall program should restore files to the way they were before you installed Netscape. If the correct files are not in place before you reinstall Netscape, they probably won't be there when Netscape uninstalls. It sounds like one of the DLLs (Dynamic Link Libraries) got deleted. If Netscape says it cannot be opened, but it opens anyway, it's probably saved somewhere in your cached files.” 7:41:47 PM 4/01/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “I uninstalled by going thru Control Panel, etc.” 9:27:01 PM 4/01/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “hummm” 9:46:21 PM 4/01/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “Evergreen, I'd like to help, but there's not enough information given. I do have an idea, although I cannot be certain of what the problem actually is. It sounds like Netscape changed some file associations, which I consider rather rude, but everyone does it, but I digress. I'm assuming that prior to the Netscape installation, you were using Internet Explorer. Try reinstalling IE (even if you never uninstalled it). That may restore the file associations that the Netscape installer stepped on. I'm no fan of the Microsoft Corporation, but I must say that Netscape's got nothing on IE. IE5.5 is also remarkably stable for a Microsoft product.” 8:22:16 AM 4/02/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “Ken, I tried reinstalling IE but that didnt reset anything. Any suggestions now?” 8:37:48 PM 4/02/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “What kind of object do you want to open? This example will work for a graphic. Find the object. Right click on it and select open with (You might have to hold down ctrl or shift to get he open with option to come up). Select a graphic editing program of your choice (microsoft paint for example) There should be a box that says "always use this program to open these files" Check it. That should work.” 8:53:19 PM 4/02/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “Ok, first you need to find a chicken without mark or blemish and sacrifice it upon an alter of silicon. (Old HP desktop works best) Then look in 'add-remove programs' and see if Netscape is still there. If so try to uninstall it again. If you get an error don't panic. Search for 'Netscape.exe' and delete the folder you find it in. Either way, reinstall the latest version of Netscape. If it still doesn't work, kill another chicken and repeat... Good luck!” 12:01:14 AM 4/03/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “The programer where I work told me that the newest version of Netscape is really buggy. The older version is better than IE.” 2:18:06 AM 4/03/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “email me if you want more suggestions. What operating system are you using? (probably Windows 98 or something like that) What are you trying to open? How are you trying to open it?(probably by double clicking the icon) What used to happen when you performed this operation? What happens now? kreilly2@tampabay.rr.com” 8:13:43 AM 4/03/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “First suggestion: NEVER uninstall Internet Explorer. If you do, reformat and reinstall your operating system. (It's ugly, trust me. M$ made it so you shouldn't uninstall.) Second suggestion: Do not use Netscape 6.x. The most stable Netscape version I've found that's current is Netscape 4.76. (I've had to test every version from 3.x up.) Oh, and never even bother with Netscape 4.61. If you have uninstalled Internet Explorer, call Barlo. And bring a lot of chickens.” 1:06:36 PM 4/04/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “Ok..I never did uninstall IE.. I will try a few more things and let you know whats up.. I really appreciate all your help guys..” 1:30:17 PM 4/04/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “Evergreen, here's the link to the downloads page for older versions of Netscape. For some reason they don't have 4.76 there, only 4.75 as the 'newest' old browser. I'm not familliar with 4.75, but I know that 4.74 is stable. If you've got a spot that I can upload it, I can send you the full install of 4.76. (Not email, it's about 20 megs or so.) Good luck. Chuck http://home.netscape.com/download/archive/client_archive47x.html” 1:40:34 PM 4/04/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “I cant find Netscape on the add/remove list..if I install this older version will it go over the newer or will I end up with two versions?” 1:44:21 PM 4/04/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “Hey, don't diss Microsoft. I'm running IE 5 on Win3K and love it. It's the most stable setup I've seen next to linux.” 9:36:09 PM 4/05/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “Win3K? Cool... ..all I've run past W2K has been Whistler. Maybe they figured out how to prevent Active Directory replication failures!” 9:39:40 PM 4/05/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “Evergreen, if you choose the same defaults as you did on your first installation, it should install to the same directory and change the appropriate registry entries.” 9:41:45 PM 4/05/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “Evergreen, If you can't find Netscape on your add/remove list and Netscape is still running, then you'll probably end up with two versions of Netscape if you install a new one. This isn't necessairly a bad thing. I've got at least four/five versions of Netscape (to beta test, I prefer I.E. or Opera) installed on my system off the top of my head, and only two show up in the add/remove. Good luck in your tweaking. Let us know how it turns out. P.S. Deathmarch99, I'm not dissing, just stating facts. Never uninstall IE, it's ugly. (I'm running W2K on three different machines of mine and I love them all. Finally, no more BSOD 12:05:36 PM 4/06/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “THe new Netscape isn't compatable with many systems. Just go back to the old netscape will they debug everything!” 12:15:18 PM 4/06/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “I GOT IT FIXED FINALLY!!!! Prefernces..who would have thought the answer was in prefernces of all durn places..LOL took me long enough eh?” 12:52:22 AM 4/23/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “lol, has anybody tried IE 6? I just got the beta today.” 1:05:57 AM 4/23/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “beta you don't test that on your own machine.” 4:48:40 PM 4/23/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “I always beta stuff on my own machine. I mean, how are you really going to know how it works, unless it breaks and you have to fix it a few times?” 5:10:51 PM 4/23/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “I just uploaded 6.0 last week and it has done wonders for all of my porn downloads!” 5:13:33 PM 4/23/01 RE: All computer whizzes...I need help!! “heh, heh. Once I took a whiz on a computer. That was cool.” 1:02:22 PM 4/24/01
