And I thought I was in shape
At work a few weeks ago we had a Health Fair and one of the things they did was do Blood work. My results came back today and it said I was Overweight.
At 5' 10" & 176 pounds (butt nekkid)? Ummmm? If that's so, Id hate to see what they'd call a 300 pounder!
They told me I don't exercise either. OK?

Take those blood workers on an uphill at Savage Gulf and see who's out of shape and don't exercise!

RE: And I thought I was in shape
My first hike as a Forest Service Volunteer 5 years ago I was 5'9", 200 lb. I couldn't keep up with the 73 & 74 yr. olds who were training me. (Now I am under 160 lbs and can finally keep up with them!)

I can't keep up with Mel and the llamas...they're too quick.

Phil......
Now you know you are putting people on!
Everytime I see you, you have lost more weight, and are in better shape.
The only reason you can't keep up with me and the llamas is because you are carrying a pack, and I'm not, and the llamas are teenagers (in llama years).
Geeze!
I am 5'2", and haven't seen the sunny side of 135 pounds in five years.
I hate this getting old sh!t.
You walk, and work, and slave away in your yard, you give up chocolate, steaks, mashed potatoes, and gravy, and for what?!
(I'll never totally give up beer)
Your fanny gets bigger, and shifts further towards the South Pole.
BAH!

Well, Tea, that's my height....... and WAS my weight in high school. Now I have a tendency to agree with Mel and am not even gonna approach the weight issue!!! Sign me, "Getting fatter every day, but I'm a mean hiker"

In 20 years Ice will be a short, fat, bald guy with bad knees and back. All he will ever say is "Back in my day..."

If Walkindude is out of shape, I'm dead! But for being dead, I'm feeling okay this morning. I'm where Phil was five years ago and I hope in five years I'm where he is now. Let's see, the Sierra catalog had some knee braces on sale...

RE: And I thought I was in shape
Sometimes I feel like a hamster running on one of those little wheels....I keep trying harder but seem to stay at the same place. Just had my cholesterol checked again after 6 months. It went down a little but to do so I have to run 3x a week, 1 class of kickboxing, and eating low fat foods, no fast food or junk. Whew! This aging thing takes a lot of work to fight and often isn't much fun. On the other hand it beats the alternative....

RE: And I thought I was in shape
The doctors said that Robert and I have a little bit high cholesterol so we changed the diet. He has actually been walking on our old walking machine. We have stairs at our house which help a little. I sympathise with everything sliding south--that is what those clever bras were designed for. I don't expect to look 20 but I like to still look like a female.

RE: And I thought I was in shape
My "six-pack" abs have been forever obliterated by the dick-do I created while drinking what else, but...6-packs! Seriously, Doc told me I have high cholesterol during my last exam. Although, at 155lbs and 5'9" I look in shape, it's the inside that really counts.

I haven't had my cholesterol checked lately. All this talk makes me think I should, esepcially since HBP runs on the male side of the family. When I moved to Cali 4 years ago, I was 170, 6'2". I'm 200 now but have been growing muscles at the gym. Still got some love handles tho...

Wow I guess I don't fit any demographic of backpacker. I'm 6'4" and 150. With my pack on I look like a tree that someone hung their pack on while they're using the hole. Oh well, at least I can take twinkies on the trail with me a laugh at everyone else. muahahaha. say it with me...me-tab-o-lis-m. ;D

RE: And I thought I was in shape
Yeah, I'm fighting the battle to lose weight as well. I finally got to the point where I could realize why my wife said I was fat and started to change. 30 lbs later I'm still going down. Diet and exercise is where its at, nothing fancy. I realized I better do it now because the older I got the harder it got to lose.

Damn Hyperpacker, If your doctors charts & graphs say your overweight then I'll never get there!
My BMI (Body Mass Index) was 25.250. Between 18.5 to 24.9 is considered healthy. If I shaved my chest hair I think I could be healthy again.

For my height I am supposed to be around 168 lbs. I would be sooo skinny I would be....DEAD! At one point 7 years ago I was 155lbs. But I was pretty poor and had a job that was 10 hrs of VERY physical work.

hyperpacker, a 10 hour work week is nothing to complain about!
I've worked 20, even 30 hour weeks and you don't see me complaining. Granted, I don't put in those kinds of hours anymore.

I thought I was in shape...
Until I was on a mountain bike trip with my son and husband. We all had new bike shorts and my son was commenting on how great his were--he had the best colors, best fit, best brand, yadda yadda yadda. "But", he said, "Mom's have the best PADDING. She even has the pads on the sides!!!" He really thought that my sticking out hips were extra short padding! My husband was trying to give him the CUT IT OUT gesture behind my back. My son really was embarrased when he realized his mistake and apologized over and over. D'oh.

Later in the day (after about 22 miles of crazy biking) I withheld his water ration. Just kidding.
