“My ISP provides as part of my services 100mb of storage space in a personal web directory on their servers. I don't know why I didn't think of this, but I'm eventually going to migrate everything over there on my own web page. It's not fancy, and it's far from done, but it's free.

“No skills required Lizs, I used MSWord. It's been years since I created web pages using HTML tags. Too lazy for that when there are so many good programs to do it for you. Many of them free.”

Putting together your own web site is a fun way to go. And, it's pretty simple to do these days.

“Until I figure out how to do my website (www.schaffnerfamily.com) I'm going to use webshots, which is free. Just up loaded some small/low quality scanned slides. It went smoothly. We'll see. Check the site, photos are sentimental not art.

“I couldn't figure out bulletproof ftp and cuteftp hangs up when I try and install it, so I've about finished pulling my photos off photopoint one by one. I've got them around on a zip, but no zip hooked up right now.

Webshots is where I'll be for sure. Much like photopoint in some ways, the upload software seems ok and I've been using the galleries and screensaver for some time.”

Seriously, consider investing in FrontPage or MacroMedia's Dreamworks. These software packages can get to be fun (if you're a computer hack like me). You'll also need image processing software like Adobe photoshop and an FTP utility like WS_FTP Pro. The way I look at it is if you're carrying on in life and you're doing these trips, document what you have to look back on and share. - IMO, to do this, your own web site is the way to go. And besides, doing the web site thing is part of the trip itself (which makes it last once you're home).”

“I found a new home for my pictures. Fototime lets you transfer pictures right from your PhotoPoint account. You have to re-type your captions (what a pain!) but at least it works!

So far I've only sent one folder from PhotoPoint, and I created a folder for a trip I took Saturday. To visit my new album at Fototime, just enter my email at the Guest Login: kleetn@backpacker.com”

DreamWeaver is a pretty powerful web development suite. If you want an image processing package to interface with this, you migh want Fireworks too. These are the high end equivalent to FrontPage and MS Imager, only Dreamweaver and Fireworks studio is mostly for professional use. It's about $600 for the package, but was $850 a few months ago at Fry's. Supposedly, the software interfaces well with MS Office.

These are the folks that bring us Flash too. For Promised Land I use FrontPage since it was easier to learn. You can publish HTML with Flash, but this software forces you to look at HTML development in a completely different way. You have to work with layers, scenes, and a timeline for each page and then you export to HTML for uploading. The software makes you think like an animator.”

At a glance, Fototime looks like a better host than photopoint. I suppose capacity and cost are pretty important factors though.”

“Ok, somebody on another site looked at it and said "It's Amanita Muscaria, technically classified as poisenous but it is one of the most pshchoactive and hallucenigenic mushrooms on the planet. Historically used by shamans and trippers it has quite a cult following. Do a search on it and you'll find all kinds of really wierd stuff."

About what photoworks...I used them from about '92 through '99. When they were a smaller outfit, they did a pretty good job w/ quality control. As they grew bigger, they got much worse. I've found pinholes in my negatives.”

Right before your Rainier trip, I went to Hurricane Ridge and they just plowed the snow, so I was able to walk around with boots. It was real beautiful up there. I wish I could have joined you on the trip, but I am not equipped for winter camping or hiking.”

The trip to Rainier didn't happen...couple of reasons, but it boiled down to neither of us were in a state where we'd come back from the weekend healthy.

Thanks for the thoughts on the new job Lipstick. I'm loving it! The 1.5 hour bus ride each way really kills time at home (explains why I haven't posted much). I'm working for the Gates Foundation doing computer support for the recipients of computers through their library program. Lovin' the work, the people, and even better, I feel like the job has a positiive impact on people (unlike working for the legislature, where the idea was to separate people from their money!)”

“I just received an e-mail from Lookingglass about Photopoint & fototime. This was the message from fototime.

Photopoint has just blocked access from fototime, so you can't download albums anymore, the b@stards.

Fototime says to use FTP (file transfer protocol) to download from Photopoint, then use photoalbum to publish them at fototime.

Lookingglass said that FTP is a program you can download. It's free for awhile, then you have to pay for it.”

Do you have APS film developed. If so, how does the cost vary? I checked out ofoto.com and it says they develop APS. However, where it discusses the price to order prints, the 4 x 7 and 4 x 11 size options (APS)aren't listed as options... I'm confused.

“I use regular film and a scanner, but recently started getting CDs. I love the time I save from not scanning, but the cost goes up for me. I paid the Photopoint intro price for 2000 photos. When I got to 2237, I got a e-mail that said pay $9.95 in 10 days or I'll get locked out. I moved 237 photos. For every 250 photos it will cost me another $9.95. I still have the photopoint but I won't go over 2000 photos. I'm with Webshots now. I like the slide show feature. I still don't have Webshots linked to my webpage. We use Fireworks and Dreamweaver on my webpage too. SnowDude is the expert on that. I just add the photos, but I'm learning to do other stuff with it.”

“I have not given them any money yet but I am curious if others are still able to link to my photopage. I fear if I was to look at them the will lock me out and others as well.

Or do they just lock up all the photos until one was to pay?”

“I haven't paid them anything and my photos are still there. I can't add to them without paying. I don't know about linking a photo from there.
