RE: New Hampshire's White mountains in September
Jer: At the Appalachia Parking lot, almost due north of Madison peak.... near Dolly Cop road.

There is water at the Perch, then at Demands col, next water, I think is from the taps at Mt. Washingto Summitt (there is even a cafeteria)... there is a backpacker room with running water, bathrooms etc. as well. Then there is water at the Lake of the Clouds and at Nauman.

I'm sure there would be water at Crawfor Notch (and we'll have a car there). Water supply looks good the rest of the way too, except I'm not sure about the stretch from Garfield Ridge to Liberty Springs (7.7 miles)... there is water somewhere around Greenleaf hut, but I'm not sure if it is the full mile off the trail (to Greenleaf).

Maybe someone who knows more will post??

RE: New Hampshire's White mountains in September
For possible cold in the mountains, I come prepared to start out in either shorts or long pants. Sometimes its cold enough at 4K in New Englan in the late summer morniI that I have to start off warm and then shift to shorts. Sometimes I start off in shorts and need almost winter type clothes at altitude. Last summer I got frozen rain and temps in the 30's at 4,000 feet in Maine.

I copied this from somewhere into one of my "word files."
Since we are going in late summer, the downside (to the temperature) risk is increased:

"The standard summer gear for White Mtns.involves layers of clothing. Minimum for the upper body includes: polypro long sleeve shirt, fleece or wool sweater, preferably with turtle neck, waterproof/windproof shell with hood. Minimum for the lower body: polypro tights, fleece or wool pants, and rain pants that fit over them. Wool or fleece hat, polypro balaclava, warm gloves or mittens and a way to keep them dry. Spare dry socks. This is in addition to whatever you wear to hike, which preferably is not cotton but synthetic. You would need to adjust this for your own tendency to be cold. If it seems like a nice summer day, and it's too much bother to lug all this clothing and more around with you, think about how you would fare overnight if you injured yourself and had to wait for help to get out.... Check any of the AMC publications for other recommended summer gear. It's probably on the home page of this website somewhere. Summer temps. in White Mtns. can get as low as 20s-30s in the daytime, but it's usually a combination of wind, wet, and higher temps. (40s-50s) that causes people to underestimate the potential severity of summer weather and get into trouble with hypothermia. "

I don't take sweaters... I substitute something like a fleece jacket.

RE: New Hampshire's White mountains in September
check it out

Date Hiked: 8/15/2001

Conditions: All trails dry. Airline is narrow first mile, expect to be swatted by a few branches. After that its in great shape. Special Required Equipment: Brought all above treeline gear. Only needed fleece jacket on top of Adams, where it was in the mid 40's.

Comments: Fun hike. Only saw 2 people on Adams, 4 on Madison. Beautiful day with 100 mile visibility, mild temps, and barely a breath of wind (someone tried and failed to fly a kite on top of Madison). AMC guide notes the Airline can be tricky to follow on Adams summit cone. This shouldn't discourage anyone, I had no trouble following the blazes and cairns. Both summits had unbelievable views across the Great Gulf to Washington and Jefferson. RT 6:35 Submitted

Bummer Rad! Its just like you to wait 'til the last minute to back out. I wuzz counting on you to carry some of my gear.

Dan:

The basic plan is:
Day 1: the Valley Way trail from the Appalachia parking lot to Madison via the AT/Osgood trail (4.2 miles), then to the Perch via the AT/Gulfside and Israel Ridge (2 more miles).

Day #2: 10.7 miles via Randolph path and the AT to Nauman shelter.

Day 3# on... continuing along the AT south to Franconia Notch.

We leave the re-supply car at Crawford Notch... where we meet up. As it turns out, I may take off day #3 to get my son back to school (or I might put him on a bus and catch up to y'all for a couple more days of hiking).

BTW I see we cross water coming down into Crawford Notch from Nauman.

RE: New Hampshire's White mountains in September
I just got done biking with my bud Jerry. I talked to him about our thoughts, his plan is to hike with us to Ethan pond and camp somewhere on tyhe other side of Crawford on Monday night and then hike back out to Crawford notch on Tuesday. I thought that we would be likely camping somewhere in the Vacinity that night anyway so where ever we camp so will he.

Since Jerbear, Mark and I are definitly going to continue all the way to Franconia maybe we should plan on putting your car at the end Jerbear. Just a thought. That will allow Ped to put his car were ever he feels comfortable "maybe also crawford?" that way he is flexible to do anything he wants.

We can put extra food in Jerry's car and gear if needed and (though I haven't asked) perhaps if we have excess gear he will run it up to my truck or something.

Ped any update on your plans for Tuesday and such? At least if you want to head out Tuesday morning you have someone to do it with. We would sure love to have you smiling face though through the Bonds!!!!!
