RE: New Hampshire's White mountains in September
Just wondering, What will the temps be like in the Whites in September?

RE: New Hampshire's White mountains in September
In my limited experience:

Whites and Maine have been pretty hot in early Sept/late August... but of course it can get really cold above the tree line. Gotta be prepared for temps in the 30s daytime above treeline. Won't be worse than that in the evenings, as we won't spend evenings below treeline

I'd be prepared for windchill of about 10 degrees or lower at the peak of Mt. Washington. This ain't so bad, because it gets better fast as you descend and you'll be moving and heated up there. There is plenty of shelter at the peak, including a cafeteria and a backpackers' room.

Ped, after talking to WD40 and looking at the map we are up for just about anything. the plan that you posted on 4/11 is ok for now, I mean there is only so many places to camp. It will really be determined when we get up there. Who comes, how everyone is walking and how far we can travel in one day. The only difference that we came up with is starting from Crawford Notch and hiking North. There are going to be some people coming from afar and no matter what we want to make sure that we cover All the Northern Presidential's no matter what. We can then double back and if people want they can do the Southern section. Wd and I are going to be prepared to hike through Friday. I think that we will have more than enough time to cover what we want and may come out early. By breaking up the trip in a North and South Section we can open it up to others that may only want to hike for 3-4 days.

My only thing that I really want to do is Do the complete traverse from Craford Notch to Madison. anything after that is a bonus.

Sorry man, I can't take up smoking & dinking. I've been there before and don't care to start those habbits again. Plus I enjoy being healthy.

What about starting from the North (near Madison) and heading south?
We would still hit the midway exit point for people who want a shorter hike.

RE: New Hampshire's White mountains in September
I might be up for doing one night with you depending on where you start. School is in session, so it is difficult to take a week off during the semester. I was trying to post a link to the http://outdoors.org/BBS/Hiker-Journal/index.html board but the Internet gods wouldn't let me post it. If you go to that site and search "Presidential Traverse" you will see a number of post that might give you additional information on how to proceed.

Sue and I are doing an overnighter in August over the "Bonds" in the Pemi wilderness. This time, I will be watching what I put into the pack.

RE: New Hampshire's White mountains in September
A summary of where I think we are in planning. Please speak up if I included something thats not settled, missed something, or you wanna re-open something for discussion.

I think we've agreed:

* Start Friday 8/31
* Definitely include the presidentials traverse (esp. the Northerns).
* Try to cover Madison through Franconia Notch.
* We need to stay flexible.
* Some people are committed for at least one week (through to the next Friday), but there are plenty of chances for others to opt out earlier.
*Take advantage of our multiple cars by trying to pre-position food, perhaps in a car trunk, along the way.

I think the next step is to decide where and how we want to meet up. That might help us decide where to start our trek.. North (near Madison), South (Franconia Notch) or in the middle (Crawford?).

Ordered the maps and guide - should be getting them soon. Still in, the only thing that would kill me for the week would be a job.

Besides Amy, SirP, Walkindude, Ped, JerBear - who else???

Jerbear - I'll be out your way the 9th. Have a wedding in Detroit and Cleveland seems to be a good place to see stuff on the way.

Jer: Glad you're coming. I'm looking forward to meeting you.
(BTW: I'm jealous of you going to NS, I am in love with that place. If you are going to do some car exploring in NS, I recommend going all the way out on the Digby Neck.)

Dude: Is the plan for me to pick you up at Manchester, or did you put something else together?

RE: New Hampshire's White mountains in September
Meeting at Crawford by Saturday AM sounds pretty reasonable. I've worked it into the following thinking/planning: I'm leaving out some details (e.g. exactly which trails to take at certain places) to keep my thinking reasonably simple.

There are 3 trailheads to think about, the ones at the beginning and end of the North presidential traverse and the one we hike to after the traverse is done. The easiest trailheads for the of North traverse, would be Crawford notch (which dude and Pete have discussed) at one end and Pinkham notch at the other. After the North traverse, it seems like we want to go from Crawford notch towards Franconia notch.

I think the most straight forward way to do this is to start at the Northern end of our trip (i.e. at or near Pinkham notch) and then hike up Madison and continuing the Presidentials' along the AT/gulfside and Adams, Jefferson, Clay, Washington and so on through Jackson and into Crawford Notch where we would have at least one car with re-supplies in the trunk (so we can re-supply, and people who only have a few days can get off the trail without relying on the shuttle). We can then continue hiking towards Franconia ridge and Franconia notch via Zealand notch without having to drive anywhere.

To accomplish this, some of us might link up on Friday and leave car(s) at Franconia notch. We could stay at a campsite, or we could humbly request that MadRiver let us camp out on his land. Then we could meet up early at Crawford notch? combine cars, leaving some at the notch and driving to Pinkham notch to start the hike. Mad could be more exact, but I think we'd need to allow about an hour from his property to Crawford Notch and another 45 minutes from Crawford to Pinkham. We could try to reserve space at someplace like Fourth Iron tent site (on 302, south of the Crawford Notch trailheads) for Friday night.

If we decided to start hiking at Crawford, hike the travers north to Pinkham and then drive back to Crawford to hike southward we'd need to add about 30 minutes to the time allowed for car pre-positioning if we were coming from Mad's, Fourth Iron tent site or places in between.

We could simplify logistics with cars by using the AMC shuttle, but the shuttle schedule is not all that flexible. Check it out at shuttle map/schedule <[/a>

That's all the thinking and writing I have time for. I hope this contributes and doesn't just get in the way. We may want to arrive at Crawford with a plan A and a plan B, so we can alter our plans to increase our chances of having decent weather for the northern Presidentials.

You are correct PedXing about the traveling time from my land to Crawford and then to Pinkham. You are also more than welcome to use my land Friday night if you wish, or you can camp closer to Crawford. It's your choice.

I like the idea of leaving a car of supplies at Crawford and going to Pinkham for the start. From there we can re-shuttle for the southern part if we need to.
