Hi everyone,
I already gave a brief boi under the newbie thread. So I won't repeat myself here. Just want to welcome Vix. I was given such a warm and fuzzy welcome that I want to share that same feeling to others. What a family!!! I beginning to learn that you need a good sense of humor to survive here. Hehehe.

ldhiker... you asked why piercings? Why not?? Seriously though, they're like tatoos, except you can easily remove them if you don't want them anymore. It's a form of self expression I suppose.... and yeah, I'm proud of mine! I wouldn't have got them done if I didn't like the idea..... :o)

RE: Bios
I'm 52 years old and have been backpacking since I was 16 except for a 4 year period when I was in the Navy on a ship traveling between Japan and the Gulf of Tonkin(That's Vietnam).

I live in northern California, that's "way northern", about 90 miles from the Oregon border.

I'm a technician in a University Chemistry Department.

Married for 31 years to a nice person together with whom I've raised a son who works as a structural engineer and a daughter who will graduate from college this weekend in Hotel and Restaurant management and Marketing.

It nice to see this list so well attended. I haven't contributed in some time.

Pekka - I've noticed that there are several Michiganders on TT. We really know how to appreciate the outdoors!

And yes I love the pantagonia silkweight - top and bottom. Its so thin so I don't feel bulky when I'm layered.

RE: Bios
"If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look around you." Michigan state motto. A rather mellow sentiment. I grew up in the Kalamazoo area when the license plates said "Water Wonderland," then were adjusted to "Water-Winter Wonderland." The later "Great Lakes State" is okay, but I do prefer the wonderland concept. Always has been for me.

I think Wisconsin's real state motto is "Go Pack!" The plates say "America's Dairyland." Not sure I'll ever adjust completely to Cheeseland.

But the U.P. is only 45 minutes north, and that takes me right to Sylvania Wilderness at Watersmeet. Not sure I appreciate Backpacker magazine giving it attention, though the photo is pretty misleading. I wouldn't try walking across that "meadow" unless you like pretty wet ground. The trails circumnavigate certain lakes, which are gorgeous.

pekka - Have you ever noticed that people who live on the western part of the UP really wish they were part of Wisc? I was at the Porcupines Mtns last year. I think every other car (Mich license plate) had a Green Bay Packers sticker in their window and other Wisc paraphanalia... Leads me to believe that maybe Wisc isn't so bad!

p.s. I LOVE CHEESE

RE: Bios
I used to live in Marquette, which is pretty much dead center on the north side of the U.P., and Packer fever is pretty strong there, as well as in Escanaba to the south. The closest real shopping used to be Green Bay 3hrs. south, though now Marquette has grown over the years (Menards, Target, Walmart, Kmart, ShopKo, Gander Mountain, etc., etc.) But the central U.P. is a borderland, that's for sure. To make all readers happy, the sports editor at the paper I worked for had to run coverage of the Pack, the Lions and the Bears, but the Pack does take over farther west.

We were in the Fla. Keys in January and there is a bar there with a Packer theme, including a pickup painted Green and Gold out front with big G's on it. We did not stop.

Remember in Kevin Smith's "Dogma," the two archangels are banished to just short of hell -- Wisconsin. Note the Cheesehead seller in the background as they walk through the Milwaukee airport.

RE: Bios
Hi Vix nice to meet ya, I'm 47 soon to be 48, been plumbing all of my working life and married to the same wonderful woman for 29 years. One son (we found out what caused that early) he's been out of college and on his own for a few years now. We've been trail hiking for years, we live in Hot Springs, Arkansas, there are tons of trails in Arkansas and lots of day hikes to take advantage of, we've only been doing the overnights for about seven years, we got down to the sections of trails that you can't do in one day. It's one of the most rewarding adventures that i've ever tried. When you know that you can make it out there on your own it gives you all the confidence in the world, I'm not sure but i think my wife is tougher than i am. It's hard to keep up with this group, it's hard for me because i don't have the patients to sit at the computer for more than 30 to 45 minutes, so i spend alot of time saying, HUH, what did I miss now. Happy trails hope you have fun.

I've been out of town since my last post here and wanted to thank you for the welcome, this looks like an interesting place to hang out.

I'm not sure if bpbaby would like it if I told you she was the one who told me about this site, so I won't (reprisals and all)...sorry Ice Tea.

I checked up on Mel (neat web site) and will do what I can to stay on her good side, if I can figure out what that is.....just kidding.

The ant's, rough edges and stumps don't worry me much, I do hate the sticky spots though.

Also...hello to all the other newbies.

RE: Bios
I guess it's time for mine. I'm a "freshly" turned 32 yo male, married to a great school teacher (middle school). We have one son, Maxwell, who is 17 months and already a lady killer. I've been camping all my life, but I have always had the urge to get into BPing, but never had anyone to go with (my wife refuses to go, which disappoints me a little). Just found out that a couple of my friends have been on a some of hikes (one bad one were they go into some bad stuff) and said that I would love it. So, they put me in charge of getting this years trip together. Bought a Michigan trail book that's 3 inches thick and decided on two trips. First one is the Segment B of the North Country Trial, trailhead at I believe Dilling road. Hike the range going north for a day or two. Pick up the Manistee trail at the Dam and head back south on the other side of the river back to the trail head. Second trip, again, North Country Trail. This time the Lake Superior Section, trail head lower part of the Taq. Falls and head north to the Muskalounge (sp?) lake. These guys wanna hike, so I hope that this will do.
My Gear:

Well, I don't have a lot of money to gather all the "Super Batman" stuff. I have friends that went though the Army. After checking out prices, I figured that if it's good enough for the U.S. Army, it's good enough of me. I've got all most everything (few "nick nacks" outstanding), and I think that it might work.

1 Large US Army A.L.I.C.E. pack external frame. Hear they hold about 3800.

Eureka Tetragon 5 3 season / 3 person tent

Trioxane fuel folding stove and fuel bars.

Army issue mess kit.

Army issue load bearing vest.

Various other life sustaining things.

Can't wait to get out there. I also work at a school (I don't teach, I run a high school theater) and this year has been a little crazy. that's about it. See you on the trail!!

Belle and I will be passing thru in late July enroute home from our roadtrip. If funds (gas!) allow, I wanna drive to Big Bend and follow the border to the gulf. Mebbe we could hook-up for a one nite stand (I mean hike!) in the region.

Thanks for the kind words for my brother, sirpete. I love him dearly and we've had great conversations about gear!!

We're pretty much the same laid back temperment too, so we can dish it out as well as take it. Guess that's why we fit in so well on here, huh?

With the way bacpac's been picking on me, I feel like I have 2 kid brothers..but that's impossible since bacpac's an old fart in chronological ages...lol
