W.C. - Did you do some burning & dodging in that one photo with the spruce forest floor?

RE: My photos of Monongahela National Forest area
I don't know what burning & dodging means. If you mean alterations to the pictures, no, I just snapped the pics with a disposable camera, and then scanned them.

The one I think you are speaking of came out a little blurred. I love the one in the middle, of the overlook. I think it's the same overlook as you have in your pic, but I took that picture in winter, you can barely see the ice on the ridge to the left. It was so awesome in person.

Thanks baume!

Wild Child - I meant the left photo. The middle photo there is of Red Creek Canyon in Dolly Sods. I don't have a pic yet on my site of that one. Those are nice shots! Great light-beams-in-sky. The clouds up there do great stuff. On my recent trip there, I didn't see any fog or snow the whole drive up there until I got near the top. All of a sudden I was in heavy thick fog and there was snow. The climate up there is very interesting... High winds and fast moving clouds. TTYL

Mr.JJ...I made an effort to hike the Sods last January, but my tranny konked out about 45 minutes from the trailhead. Had to turn around, and ended up driving back home (luck'ly) in second gear. Your pics are making me jones to make another effort to get there!

RE: My photos of Monongahela National Forest area
Buddur - if you are looking for a recommendation.. There are several large beaver ponds in the open plateau country in Dolly Sods North. It's wet & boggy but that's a good thing! The trails there are not officially marked, but they are dashed-dotted on different maps. I did some trail maintenance there last summer and saw all kinds of things, including an unexploded bomb from WWII training excercizes in the area. The forest ranger showed us that one!

Note: Dolly Sods North (DSN) is the area north of Blackbird Knob. It's no officially designated 'wilderness' but it is much more 'sods' like than the real Dolly Sods.

Wow, those sure are very pretty pictures. I feel the "emotions" of nature coming out of the pictures. They make me want to frollic naked in the forest!

Veeeeery nice. Try to post more often, JJ!

WC--you've got some nice composition in your shots. Do you only use a disposable, or do you have a better camera?

Dude, I've been there!

JJ, Were you on Haystack Knob?

I have hiked up and down Long Run and butchwacked UP to the Roaring Plains up Long Run Holler......
That is one steep !$%& and I saw what are probably bear dens(a bunch!) dug out at the bases of huge rocks up the steep sides of the holler.

Oh yeah, don't tell the bear hunters!

Tommy,

I don't own a nice camera, and I probably won't be buying one anytime soon. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I have some great pics of snow and ice at Bear Rocks. I will have to scan them.

Great stuff JJ!! What film are you using? Print film, with the huge contrasts in some shots?? Sounds like you must be...... since you also know dodging and burning. ;-)

RE: My photos of Monongahela National Forest area
Tom, thanks for the info on the bear dens. It is known to the locals about that area having a lot of bears. I took off my poncho under a hemlock on the ridge that goes s.e. from Haystack. As I walked away a bear was climbing down the tree and it darted off! It was about a year old. I'm surprised you have been there as that area is practically unknown to backpackers! Only cool people go there. :)

Thanks everyone for the compliments!! I updated the site over the past few days so check again when you get a chance!
