RE: gear deals!
Wow, great prices on the Osprey. I have a couple of the smaller packs and paid double what they're asking! Thanks for the heads up.

EMS Dedham, MA has Safewater inline filters on clearance for $9.95 (usually $30+!). I don't know if any of the other locations have them-apparently EMS(a New Engalnd outfitter) is dropping the line, or something.

I got my Mountain Gear catalogue last night and while they carry some high end stuff that's out of my reach money-wise they did have some great sale stuff.

I just need a watch. I've had Casio altimeters (didn't like) & just ripped the outer ring off my Suunto altimeter. Both had lousy backlights. I've had G-shock & Humvee's, each promising to be unbreakable. They don't last long with me. Need an indestructible watch with a good backlight. Maybe I should just buy a $10 Timex every 6 months.

I bought a Timex Helix on special and the only thing that works well is the time. The altimeter sucks and the temp prety much sucks too. The only reason I still wear it is because it's huge and most watches look too small on my gorilla arms.

This is what I use on the trail because I hate having a sweaty watch on my wrist. $9.97. And...AND, it has the magic 8-ball button so you can ask it any question and get a digital answer. "Will I burn my rice on the stove tonight?"

That's a pretty ugly watch & I thought my large yellow faced plastic Suunto was ugly. I'd rather have a wristwatch. If I was gonna go with something else, I'd go with the contractor belt gorilla watch from Dulath Trading (like them) but it doesn't have a backlight which I need.

Duct, check the straps, the buckles on mine prevent that. If you put the straps in backwards they may not lock in.
I put my Big Agnes Insulated Pad in it and it works fine.

foodsaver vacuum sealer
Tilia 220 on clearance at target $27.00. Thats the small one that takes up to 8" bags. The 345 (11" bags)is on clearance for $41.00 and the 840 (11" bags, internal roll storage and cutter)for $69.00. It looks like they are changing the design slightly in the future and the store is closing out the old models. I got the 220 yesterday and it works great. I'm replacing a Daney (sp?) that didn't seal well.

I picked up a North Face Trailhead 6 family car camping tent, for $40 at the REI scatch and dent sale. It seems to be in good shape except for the pole for the fly, which I'll have repaired at TNF for about $25. Its a $350 tent, 26 pounds, so its for car camping with the boy scouts.

Gem -- We just had one yesterday here in Detroit.

I got some decent deals. Some Keens, glove liners, PolarTec 200 wt. pants and such. The score was a Exped Downmat7 for 20.00.

There was plenty of deals to go around.

They seem to announce the sales in the store, but maybe there is a mailing list also. People started lining up at 4PM, and at 5AM when I showed up the line was around 2.5 sides of the building. It was in the low 20s, and people were in their tents and sleeping bags. They came out at 6 am and gave numbers, I got number 83, and later they opened at 9am and let people in by their number. It was a madhouse, and once I picked up that 26 pound tent I was unable to shop because of the weight and bulk of the load. I also got a nice REI small raincoat for $25.
