My dogs first trip

“I took my Amstaff., aka, pitbull, on his first backpacking trip. We went to Ventana Wilderness in the Los Padres Nat'l Forest, south of Carmel,CA. I was so proud of my dog. He is very well trained and is a great diplomat for the breed. My buddy has a Lab and the two of them had a ball. I shopped around quite a bit for a pack for my boy, Diablo. I (we) chose a "Outward Hound" pack. I gradually got him used to the idea of wearing a pack by having him wear it on his walks, but everyday I added more weight to it. He gets soo excited at the sight of his pack. I'm am such a proud Dad. Anyone else have any dog hiking stories?”

“I am not my dog's Dad (with half hearted apologies to Dr. Laura). I am on of my dog's humans (the alpa male in fact). My dog is a great hiker always checking on me to make sure I haven't lost her and to watch how I fare on the areas that gave her difficulty.”

“I remember my dog's first time on the trail. It was to the peaks above Alpine Ski Resort in Tahoe during the late summer. She was about 4 months old and we'd pretty much just gotten her from the pound. Right off the bat, she was an awesome trail dog. Stayed close, didn't bolt after animals, strong climber. We introduced her to the water and taught her to swim in a warm lake that trip. We were so proud!”

“I did some walkin in the woods and sleepin in the woods with a dog the nother time. It was fun! That is wher I learned how to fite bares. Cep ever buddy yelled and cryed when we would practise bare fightin cuz they thought we was reely fightin I gess.

That dog ( "Jezebel" which is a indian werd that meens "Wild Dog That Lives In The Woods And Eats Bares") did not have a pakpak cuz she is a wild dog I gess.

I have a Wenahaha pakpak that is good. I never did practise, I jus put it on my bak and put ever stuff in it and started walkin in the woods.

You hafta be careful wher you walk, tho. Some times yer pakpak will get stuck on the rocks or on the trees or on the bushs.

I mostly use my leach now to. That is ok cept my daddy walks SLOW!

I am gonna get a leetle pakpak soon, to, for leetle times that I do not need much food an watter for that is jus a day and the nother day an that is all.”

I'll have to send you pictures of my kids, er, dogs. I have a 4 year old male Amstaf, his name is Diablo. I also have a 13 year old English Bull Terrier, her name is Lefty. She looks just like the Target dog. She cannot handle backpacking, but she loves car camping. She was at the vet. during the trip.
Anyway, Diablo was great- he waited for me when I had to scramble through downed trees. He never bolted after any other dogs. He stayed about 4 feet in front of me. He was the perfect hiking buddy My co-worker took his dog and tied him up at night, he shared his tent with his son. When he asked me if I was going to tie up my dog-I said "NO, I share MY tent with MY son". My dog was great we shared my North Face Polaris. He did not sleep against the walls, he slept on my empty pack. If he had to go potty- he gently nudged me, so that I would let him out then he would come right back into the tent. At night, when we were watching the campfire burn, he got tired and walked over to the door of the tent and sat there, waiting to be let inside. Can you tell that I love him....? This is one reason that I get soooo pissed off at ignorant people who stereotype the breed.”

“I took my dog, Bailey, to Cades Cove in the Smokies this past weekend. We bushwacked through the middle of the valley mainly following animal trails along Abrams creek. She had a blast....flushed out 8 wild turkeys and a herd of deer.”
