Glacier NP ideas
I'm new here. Trying to plan a backpack in Glacier for sometime in July. I've found one promising loop, but I'm looking at other possibilities that would be point to point. Only have 1 vehicle and am wondering if there is any sort of shuttle bus available within the park that would assist with a point to point hike?

Pity poor woodswomon. She's new here and there's all sorts of garbage threads going on (to which I've certainly added) and no one has offered any advice.

Might I suggest doing a search through old threads for "glacier". Worth a shot!

RE: Glacier NP ideas
I was just going to create a thread on this topic. I was thinking about going to Yellowstone but I have heard Glacier gets a lot less people. Try going onto www.GORP.com and search for Glacier National Park. Also try the park service website at www.nps.gov/glac/

Hope this helps.

Has anyone here been into this area and have any trails to recommend or any comments?

RE: Glacier NP ideas
Any place you go in Glacier is incredibly beautiful. The Dawson-Pitamakan Pass area is gorgeous, so is the Swiftcurrent area or the Ptarmigan Tunnel area or the Nyack Valley or . . . There are shuttles that go to the main trailheads and lodges - expensive but interesting. Contact the park for more info. You have to have reservations for the backcountry campsites - the more popular ones can be hard to get. You can reserve in advance for an extra $20 (on top of the $5 per person per night fee.)

RE: Glacier NP ideas
last year in june we did 10 days. awesome and rugged. june is too early. we got into snow and really had to use our ice axes and crampons. we started at bowman lake and went accross the top comming out at slide lake.
get a backcountry guide and planner from the glacier nat park. you MUST have advanced reservation for backcountry campsites. the earliest you can apply is april 16. we are going back in jul for another 10 days. we sent our app in today. doing a diferent section. in my opinion glacier is more beautifull than yellowstone but more strenuous ..of course you can figure some tough ones in yellowstone as well. we did the galatin mountain area near electric peak in yellowstone and it was pretty awesome.

order some of the books from the glacier book store. it does take some planning to do an extended hike. either yellowstone or glacier get the parks backcountry info. its free also get a topo map.

Here is the site for reservations and a couple of books. I'm going there this Summer to do the Northern Loop. Deanoman is absolutely right. They just started taking reservations today and they ONLY except early reservations by mail. A friend of mine dropped off our application at the West Glacier Post Office this morning.

arclite, if you get near stoney indian pass try and camp there. it would be awesome. when we were there it was all snowed in and we literally had to use our ice axes and crampons. in summer it would be a wonderfull campsite. tough climb up though.
