First Aid Kit
Been going through my pack and deleting any non essentials and when I looked at my first aid kid I noticed it was time for a little first aid itself. What do most of you carry in yours?

Gotta be at work for a 4-hour First Aid training course this morning.

Can't believe it'll take the girl 4 hours to go through and explain each item in our first aid kit!

Come to think of it; what are you doin' dude?

It always cracks me up when a guy is within a few miles of the car and carries a huge first aid kit.

RE: First Aid Kit
For the long and/ or group trips, Tekapo's list looks a lot like mine.

Snake bites pumps aren't usually necessary in the Pac NW, though. I would add an elastic (Tensor) bandage or two and a SAM splint. Internal pack frames make great splints, also.

I have also added Visine, for eyes. And Compede or Second Skin, for blisters.

RE: First Aid Kit
A film canister of Bag Balm is a good addition. Helps cuts and burns heal, prevents and heals foot fungus. Tiger balm is great for headaches.

what is a "Cholla"?

RE: First Aid Kit
Jumping cholla (pronounced ch-oy-a) is the family of cactus that breaks off parts of itself, usually in your leg. You wedge the comb bristles between the cholla ball and your leg ,and just pop it out. Pliers and duct tape take care of whats left in you.

RE: First Aid Kit
Steiny,
What is Tiger balm? Do you rub it on your head or take it internally?

RE: First Aid Kit
Tiger balm is Asia's version of ben gay or other muscle relaxer/warmer ointment. It comes in a small jar as a paste and it does wonders for sore muscles. I definately wouldn't take it internally!

Things I have actually used out of my 1st aid kit:

bandaids, sterile gauze & tape
antibotic ointment
iodine pills
tweezers
nail clippers
bug juice
P3 can opener
mirror
emergency Power Bar
emergency TP
matches
sunblock
chapstick
pocket knife

things I have never used but still bring:
emergency blanket
emergency poncho
moleskin
whistle
WD-40
saftey pins
shoelaces
condom

I think I used to bring a snakebite kit years ago...I don't have one anymore (weird cause I've seen at least 30 rattlesnakes in the Grand Canyon- my nickname is da 'Snake Charmer')

RE: First Aid Kit
WD-40 is a poor lubricant for a firearm. The primary lubricant in WD-40 is wax and it does not do an adequate job at high temperature. I would be glad to show you my gun and discuss lubrication techniques.
