Henry Mountains, Utah?
I would like to do another southern UT hike, but due to Sarabelle having to tag her yeller arse along, it will have to be somewhere other than the Natl. Parks, Monuments, etc.

Soooo....
I was perusing the maps, and came across The Henry Mountains. Then, I did a web search, and the area seems to be darned adequate. The area includes badlands, forests, and high elevation. Also, there's an abundance of wildlife.

Have any of you TTers been there? If so, can you recommend a 2-3 niter for a fella and his mut?

Thanks in advance

gojo, looks like you are heading for a remote area. While I've never been there it looks like Michael Kelsey has a book on the area and he seems to know it all - might be worth checking out.
Here's a peek at the book and you can see the chapters and maybe do an online search of some of the trails.

Man, Kelsey has a lot of typos!! I noticed one here and there in his Hiking the Colorado Canyon Country (or whatever the title is). But, boy, that sample page takes the cake! Guess it let's ya know you'll be wading through some typos, though, and expect it.

I really wanted to see the Henrys this past fall. We drove by from Hanksville headed southeast on Highway 95. There was rain and clouds and we couldn't even see them!!

I believe the world's (maybe just N. America's) last free-roaming bison herd is there.

I got some info from someone who had been there. Will try to look it up and share. :-)

(Hey and you're in great slot canyon country there. The infamous Black Hole is not far past the Colorado River bridge on that end of Lake Powell, on the north side of 95.)

I was looking through my old BP mags and found a good article on the henry's in the June 1995 mag. As Liz mentioned there are bison near one of the mountains (five in the area). Sounds like solitude should reign there...

Thanks so much, Griz!!

That's just the link/info I was looking for. I bookmarked it.

Seems it must be on my old computer, which had died!!

My BP'er mag collection doesn't go that far back )o:

The Henry's bison herd numbers about 400 head. They're hunted (surely the quota must be low)... poor things.
It would be a real treat to spy them... lion, desert bighorn, etc, too.

Not much info on water availability yet, but one route up (Ellen?) mentions following a drainage. Another description mentions springs at higher elevations, too.
I'll get the final skinny from the BLM office in Hanksville...

I'll continue to surf the web from time to time. By July, I should be a virtual authority on "The Hen's". Heck, I'm already getting excited about the drive there!
I love that country...

Thanks again for sharing yer stuff...

Here's a BLM link, although it really doesn't give much. (We stopped quickly at Hog Springs before the rains moved in.)

Geez, I screwed that up!! LOL!! I had even just put the website without a link, figuring in case I screwed it up, it would be there. LOL!!

OK, gonna have to re-look up HOW to do it!!

Here's my second attempt (wish me luck!)

Gojo... been down by Starr Springs(on the way to Lake Powell) and I tell ya....that range is pretty DRY and it will be HOT in July.

You may want to think about the La Sal's by Moab.

Just a thought.

RE: Henry Mountains, Utah?
Or, Gojo, Dixie N'tl Forest....... includes lots of stuff just outside of Bryce, Cedar Breaks, Zion, etc.... Boulder Mt. between Boulder and Capitol Reef N'tl Park (which is maybe 40 miles from Hanksville). Or maybe Pine Valley Wilderness, including some tall mts., just north of St. George. REPTILES would have good info on that Pine Valley area. It has views that look off into Zion, maybe 30 miles away. These places are at higher elevations, so would be cooler. Plus, typically look down onto red rock areas, FWIW.
