Anyone ride a motorcycle?

“Oh Man,MOTORCYCLES!!!! I've had five. All hondas. Currently,my two-wheeling is limited to a comfort bike. I live to purchase a new goldwing or st1100. I was lucky,never had an accident. They are dangerous for a fact,but they have always been my favorite way to travel.”

“WC, make sure to check out my post on the bottom of page one. After reading the comparisons on the 250cc bikes, I think you should really try to buy a virago. The thing that puts me off about the nighthawk is the the front brakes being drum instead of disc. As you know from cars, disc breaks are best. There are some bikes out there with front and rear disc, which would be preferable, but I think you should atleast have front disc brakes. My bike has front disc.”

“Tom Terrific, you know what I mean. When you are standing still on your bike, your feet should be able to touch the ground. I definitely do not suggest putting your feet down when riding, lol.

I don't pose to be a great rider yet. I am riding one year now, and getting better and better with time. As a matter of fact, it's beautiful in WA today, and I'm going to head out for a ride.

btw, I've learned quite a lot about bikes since I was purchasing one, and only speak about things I know, but thank you for asking. I don't see you offering WC any good ideas. You need not puff yourself up for me. I don't care if you have good skills or not. I am totally unimpressed.

I was a riding maniac even rode in the snow.....don't try it.
I swear I could swivel my head while riding.....kinda like Linda Blair in "The Exorcist".

I didn't know any motorcycle riders who died.
There were a few who got mangled a bit.
And then there was the wacked-out messenger who had taken several dives with cars in downtown DC.
This clown would tangle with cars in the city in slow-speed accidents for insurance money.
The dude had that LOOK in his eye.
All 'o his dawgs weren't barkin'!

I did however know three bicycle messengers who were KIA.”

“I had a 1982 Harley FXWG for 15 years until some thievin' #@%*$ got a hold of her. I guess someone else is riding her now. Or,maybe several people, depending on how many parts she ended up in.

Anyway, I always miss her most this time of year. I have to borrow chrome to polish.

Make sure you get something with enough power. It's your best defence and can make the difference between a close call and a crash.

Bikes will stand up by themselves when they're moving. When they're stopped, you want both feet flat on the ground. Passengers always pick the worst time to shift around. Get a good fit.

When my Father died I fixed up his bike for my Brother-in-Law. I made a few test runs and never felt comfortable. My Brother-in-Law wrecked the bike on the way to his house in California.

“When I was a lot younger my boyfriend (became husband) rode his yam 500 everywhere. After we were married he traded it in for the 750, this was when they first came out with the shaft. We tripped all up and down the eastern US. We rode in the rain, cold, sun, we just rode and rode. I could ride his 500 but couldn't reach the ground with his 750.

Anyhoo, my friends brother got a beautiful yam virago 1100. a few months ago and the bug is back big time. Monday I go to take my written test to get my permit. I don't want anything bigger than a 500 but those are getting hard to find and I don't want anything real old. I like the suzuki savage but am a little concerned about that single cylinder. I've heard the kawasaki ninja 250 is a good beginner bike but haven't been able to find any in stock around here. Saw the kawasaki vulcan 500 which seems about perfect for me but would like to try out that little ninja. I heard it's a high revvin' thing, redlines at 14000 RPM's!!!!
Anyway, I should have one in a few months. Did a lot of motorcycle camping in the past which, while not backpacking, was still pretty fun.
Me and my husband rode for about 10 years and never had a serious accident. Just one minor little spill. Lots of close calls, you have to ride very defensively and expect the worse. I want one for recreation, not transportation!”

“Anybody ever seen or ridin on a Ural motorcycle or know anything about them.
www.ural.com They make a two wheel drive one. A 70/30 split between the rear and sidecar tires. Basically a ATV that has HWY approval. Its called the Sportsman.”

margo, guess what? I have a Yamaha Virago 535cc. I bought it last year. It's a great bike. I've heard a lot of good things about the 750 & 1100 too.

They don't make the Virago 535cc anymore, and I don't think they make the Virago 250cc anymore. The 250cc Virago would be too small for you since you have experience.”

“Remember three things about motocycles. 1) buy for your needs, anotherwords make sure your wants meet your needs. 2) TAKE a MC COURSE no matter how long you have been riding. I was force to take one after 4 yrs of riding compliments of Uncle Sam. 3) Use your brain while riding. I have been in 2 wrecks and too many close calls to count. Walked away from them all.”

Briar Rabbit, I've seen sidecars on the road before, but I don't know what brand they were.

Snowman, both my husband & I have taken the saftey course. I highly recommend. I've seen two kinds of drivers on the road. One (car) driver will be afraid to drive anywhere near the bike, the other drives as close as they can. I wish I were in a car at those times to teach them a lesson, but you can't do that on a bike. As you know, it's up to you to maintain the right buffer between you and other vehicles.

“I have had a '73 Kawasaki 750 3-cyl 2-stroke since '75. Expansion chambers, velocity stacks, polished carbs, competition clutch, etc. Man that MF was fast! I haven't ridden it in 15 years. I used to race it at the local drag strip; I just barely broke into the 10's. It was quite the crowd pleaser, pulling the front end up every gear. You can't imagine what a thrill it was waiting in the queue behind the starting line, waiting your turn, then rolling up to the Christmas Tree, staging, watching the lights, waiting for that green...
(I was never beaten. I did race out of my bracket a few times though...)”

“I just started riding this summer. I bought a Yamaha Seca II, 600cc. It's a fast bike. Next summer I will probably get a 650 Vtwin or a 750. I like the Yamaha R6 and the Suzuki SV650. I think bikes are my new addiction, I can't WAIT to ride this weekend.”
