LOL @ Mr.X! while I think no drugs are better than any drugs I'm not so stupid to shun the smoker over the drinker. A pull off a pipe is not more distructive than a pull off a beer.

RE: Coors, Codeine, Cannabis and Constance-
The "Holy Trinity of Hedonism" is anything you want it to be. Every individual has different spiritual needs. We can't all be expected to take the same path to the summit of Mt. Olympus. Some of us must take the walk up route due to lack of technical ability, while for others such a route might prove to be too easy and therefore provide inadequate spiritual stimulation. These individuals may try a harder route (like the great Tibetan yogi, Milarepa), or a new route altogether (like Christ or Buddah). We must all choose our path and follow it with one-pointedness and determination. Only this will bring us to the summit.

Radagast-
Who is this "Tarpy"? People have been calling me that since I first entered TT.

P.S.
I'm from Oregon, not Canada. I just spell like a Canadian.

RE: Coors, Codeine, Cannabis and Constance-
Your choice of recreational pharmaceuticals is not the issue -- it's your location and activities while consuming. Drinking while driving is a high risk activity. If you were to wrap yourself and yourself only around a tree at 60 mph I wouldn't care where and when you drank. But under the circumstances you described there was a greatly increased risk to others e.g. a carload of people sharing the road with you. Glorifying such behavior is in bad form.

I would be honored to quaff a few golden refreshments with you, let's just do it under safer circumstances -- not while attempting to control a multi-ton object moving at 90 feet per second.

X, Darlin...
We are being condemned as dopers and drunkards by an apparent T-Totaler.

AND, no doubt...
A YOUNG ONE AT THAT.

Would that this "person" were more aware of the HIGH numbers of individuals who frequent this site, and who currently partake of natural, sacred herbs, fungi, and fruit of the hops, and of the vines.

I no longer partake in precious herb inhaling, but I defend to the death the right of those who choose to put what they want into their private, personal, corporeal selves.

I laughed myself out years ago.
Much of which laughter was over inane, uninformed comments ment to disparage those at whom they were so poorly aimed.

There are many Godly Souls here who do not consider herb inhaling a crime.
There are many, as well, who like their adult malted beverages.
A little Guinness, anyone?

And if my physician chooses to dispense to me, PRESCRIBED opiates for age related spinal deterioration,
it ain't nobody's business but my own if I take them in therapuetic doses. AS PRESCRIBED.
And if I want to wash 'em down in the backcountry with single malt scotch?
That's MY business too.

This "person", and I use the term loosely, condemns that which "it" does not understand.

"It" has also had the temerity to criticize a favored portion of my highly praised (from respected members of this on-line community), and prominently displayed anatomy.

Nafook, get a life:

wow, this Mr. X is my kind of guy. As to the drink vs. smoke. I remember a time about 5 years ago, me and 2 of my close friends were in a Subaru on our way to Subway, and we sweared that we would much rather give up the drink than the smoke. Of course now, none of us smoke much, but we still toss back a few drinks now and then. good times...good times

RE: Coors, Codeine, Cannabis and Constance-
Mel, you sound like a dirty hippy. And like most dirty hippies, I'm sure you're quite happy.

I don't care to get into arguments about what right someone has of putting stuff in their body or the morality of it. I'm talking about being stupid. Smoke is smoke. You smoke enough pot, you're going to get lung cancer. And you'll get your kids taken away from you...it happened to my wife when she was a child and her parents were smart enough to get out of the drug running business.

And a close friend of mine tried some acid with some friends, had a bad trip, and jumped out of a 3rd story window and died.

Drugs F's up people's lives, and I live by the moral code that you have the right to do whatever you want unless it imposes on someone else. You put too many people at risk when you take the selfish, temporary, physical pleasure from substance abuse. Especially in the backwoods. A tree falls, bear attacks, whatever and your femoral artery gets severed. Now, assuming that YOUR not stoned, how's your hiking buddy that ate a few shrooms awhile ago. Trusting him with your life?

Revel in ignorance, it makes you feel better about things you know are retarded. Oh, I'm sorry, you call it "enlightened."

Hmmm...sounds a little bit like someone I know. While I see pot and alcohol on the same level it does not mean I agree with drunkeness. It is possible to drink in moderation and remain sober. I drink very infrequently now and with my build I can soak up about a sixer while maintaining a clear head.

Nafai --
As long as the results of his actions effect him only, I will concede his right to imbibe the substance of his choice. Of course, the local constabulary has the duty to take appropriate actions if the substance is illegal. All choices involve a price.

I am assuming X is gainfully employed and contributing the fiscally endangered Social Security System. If his actions result in a premature removal from life, then his SS contributions remain in the fund, available to us. So his rash actions do have a silver lining.

RE: Coors, Codeine, Cannabis and Constance-
alcohol, although a drug, interacts with your body in different ways than most other commonly used drugs. it also acts differently with different people (angry drunk, happy drunk, depressed drunk, etc.) Some people need to steer clear of all alcohol because of predisposition to alcoholism. Others metabolize alcohol quickly, and get a buzz faster, but have a hard time getting drunk.

I think there are "good" types of alcohol and "bad" types as well. Pure grain serves no purpose but to get you drunk. Red wine and other fermentations can help aid in digestion and help lower cholesterol.

"Good" or "bad", overindulgence destroys your liver and makes you smell bad.

RE: Coors, Codeine, Cannabis and Constance-
lol Gordon. Morbid yet amusing.

Life, like any complex system is highly unpredictable. Your actions always affect others, unless you are on a deserted island. You may not know it, and it may not always be extreme, and it may not be people you know, but everything you do as an individual has a consequence on society, local and worldwide.

seems to me nafai's argument does make sense, but taken to the logical extreme, no one should eat fatty food or cross the street or tan, etc.

I don't know anything about anything, but what I do know is that I enjoy cold beer with my barbeque, and grass when I feel like being introspective. No one's opinion but my own seems to matter to me most of the time.

Moderation is the cliche I go by.

Mel-
You're right, we must be kindred spirits. Your dissertation was quite inspirational. Thank you for your defense.

Nafai-
I'm sorry that you've had such negative drug-related experiences. I now have a deeper understanding and respect for your point of view. Please understand that I have morals as well and use good judgement when others' well being is involved. If I drank the same three beers in a bar, at the same rate, I would not be considered legally drunk. By law I would still be able to drive. Please understand that we were not haphazardly slamming beers and getting loaded. Also, you directed a statement at Mel, the one calling her a "dirty hippy". In your statement you instruct Mel to "Revel in ignorance, it makes you feel better about things you know are retarded. Oh, I'm sorry, you call it 'enlightened.'" I believe that I used the word "enlightened" as a euphamism for free-spiritedness, which you equate with ignorance. If an individual is free-spirited it does not always imply that they are ignorant.

Gordon-
You will be the primary benefactor of my life insurance policy. I think it's at about $300,000.

Nigal-
Yes, I'd love a Guinness.

Switchback-
I've decided to give up rock climbing, mountaineering, backpacking, driving, flying, using microwaves, drinking tap water, voting, associating with police officers, playing russian roulette, breathing, exposing myself to the sun, having unprotected sex, sharing needles, sniffing glue, and petting cloven hooved animals.

Jim Flink-
Everything in moderation, even moderation. That's the cliche I go by.
