help! Trail Recommendation
Hello,
(new to group)
I had a hike planned to Algonquin Park (ontario, Canada) for the end of April. However, the ground is still covered with snow.

Anyone recommend a backpacking route -2-3 day. In the midwest.
Maybe Ohio, Michigan area.

Moderate to high difficulty. (dogs allowed)

thanks!

RE: help! Trail Recommendation
Mr E, Algonquin eh? My former stepdad went there yearly. That is definetly on my "to hik" list.

I am from Michigan and can recommend a few trails. It would be easier to direct you to 2 places. One is a site called michiganbenchmark.com. The name may have changed but a search should still find it. The second is a yahooclub called michiganbackpackers. There also is the northcountrytrail.org site. The manistee river area is incredible, rolling hills beautiful overlooks. Jordan River is nice, there are 1100 miles of the north country trail.

You mentioned that you want dogs allowed and moderate to high difficulty. Dogs arent a problem but moderate to difficult maybe hard. That all depends on ability. Not alot of elevation gain/loss in Mi but there are some long trails. Hope the info helps, enjoy!

RE: help! Trail Recommendation
mister e.....i would highly recommend the shawnee state forest for your late april hike....i don't know how much time you are allotting for your hike, but the shawnee is divided into segments that make it easy to complete the circuit in sections....water is readily available (at each designated campsite)....i think you would enjoy it(although, as hyper notes above, the jordan river trail is beautiful as well)....have you considered the bruce peninsula trail or killarney provincial park as alternatives to algonquin?

Good, I was thinking of the Shawnee trail.

Can you do a segment in 3 days??

I love the Bruce and Kilarney, however they are a little wet this time of year.

THX.

Darn it, Gonzo, you beat me to the punch. I would definitely recommend Bruce Peninsula National Park. It'll probably still be chilly, but I bet most of the snow is gone. It's a fairly rugged and wild hike.

BTW, the NP is part of the Bruce Trail which follows the Niagara Escarpment nearly to Buffalo. I bet you could find some interesting hikes all along the route. The Bruce Trail Association has detailed guidebooks.

I'd also recommend Lake Superior Provincial Park and Pukaskwa NP on Lake Superior. Rugged, beautiful country. But, you'd probably see some snow there. Nothing beats hearing the wolves howl, though.

RE: help! Trail Recommendation
my timing is completely off tonight.

What about the Hocking Hills area of Ohio? It's kind of populated, but I'd bet you could string together a nice couple of nights there.
