RE: Poll: Fast Hiker or Slow Hiker?
Great quote, spacewrangler! Welcome! I'm the calm-walking, look-all-around type of hiker.

RE: Poll: Fast Hiker or Slow Hiker?
Usually it depends on my mood, my companions and my goals.
I've done slow low mileage hikes stopping at every stream, view and blueberry patch aand wherever else I felt like. I've also done pretty big mile days, although its usually more becasuse of endurance than speed.

your quote applies to me, too, spacewrangler. I don't particularly care to hike with people who have a mileage agenda and insist on sticking with it to achieve some "goal". If I wanted an agenda or a goal, I'd get a job.

I dont try to keep a specific pace. But I seem to travel at 2.5 mph. Its just my natural pace I geuss. I can go faster with ease but have no reason to, unless I am with walkindude then I hussle.
Last August I did 24 miles in 7.25 hrs. But the last 6 miles were in a daze of exhaustion.

RE: Poll: Fast Hiker or Slow Hiker?
On the uphill sections I'm relatively slow - the result of my old cigarette addiction (no more) I'm sure. But don't wait up for me cuz once I hit level ground or downhills I'm a mover! I will detour to explore side paths if I suspect an overlook or something but usually have a schedule to keep. (The car is at the other end of the trail and I have to be back to work by ___).

RE: Poll: Fast Hiker or Slow Hiker?
I hike to get away from deadlines and constant rushing to get things done or be somewhere by a certain time. So, I don't like to rush on the trail.

Sometimes you have to hike a certain distance because camping areas are restricted and spaced so many miles apart. But generally, I hike to hike at a moderate speed with no schedule at all.

Hike hard in spurts. Like to hike hard for at least an hour and a half before makin' the first stop. If the country's not too rough you'll say "Sh!t, five miles are gone an' it's not 9 o'clock, yet." Also great time to experience wildlife, coolness of a.m. etc. Say you have a 15-a-day agenda: Knock off the first five by nine, an' you'll be fine.

RE: Poll: Fast Hiker or Slow Hiker?
Depends on the trail. If it's viewless forest trails I'll smoke 'em until I get to a viewpoint. On the other hand, if I'm hiking a ridge or alpine meadow, I can wander all day.

I'd rather get going early in the morning & spend the day enjoying what I see than rushing through the trail to 'get somewhere'. I agree with Space!

I love slow hiking, it is the way to go. I have done as fast as 12 miles in 2 hours, but I really didn't see the point in it other than I had to do it.

RE: Poll: Fast Hiker or Slow Hiker?
It depends on the situation. If the trail is somewhat flat and I have a light pack then I chew up the miles with long strides. If the grades are steep and/or I am carrying a large pack I try to pace myself for comfort and safety reasons.

Depends on the trip, available time, and who you're with.

Seriously, if I were on my own, I'd range at about 44 paces per minute to about 2.73 miles per hour (give or take). Uphill and downhill, both. 8^)

I break camp fast. Pack up fast. Then hike slow. I had a hiking partners that were the opposite. Took them forever to get their act together in the morning. I was packed up and ready to hit the trail, but waited up to an hour for them to pack their backpack.

(it was a tortoise who said that...)

I'm slow&steady on the trail, but pack up fairly quickly... as long as there wasn't an cloudburst overnight. I hate packing up a wet, muddy tent.

Poll: Fast Hiker or Slow Hiker?
Howdy ya'll! I am new to the TT scene and thought I would get my feet wet with a littel poll. But first introductions are necessary. I am a 29 years single male currently living in the big !$%&ty of Chicago. Previously I resided in Missoula, MT and Alta, UT and will be heading back to the wilds of the western states within the next year. Now for the poll:

Are you a person who enjoys "power hiking" or do you take a more leisurely pace?

This quote sums it up for me:

"Mountains should be climbed with as little effort as possible and without desire. The reality of your own nature should determine your speed. If you become restless speed up, if you become winded slow down. You climb the mountain in an equilibrium between restlesness and exhaustion. Then, when you're no longer thinking ahead, each footstep isn't just a means to an end but a unique event in itself. This leaf has jagged edges. This rock's loose. From this place the snow is less visible, even though closer. To live only for some future gowl is shallow. It's the sides of the mountain which sustain life, not the top."

You lived in Alta? That would be sweet. My favorite ski area. I have two speeds, fast and not at all. I go hard and stop, not slow down, for views, food, rest and fun.
