Happy Earth Day!
Okay it's Earth Day this Sunday.

A nearby town is celebrating by teaming up with the local incinerator to celebrate. The deal: you can bring in 8 tires and have the plant burn them for free. It's billed as an "Earth Day Event".

How burning a bunch of old tires celebrates the environment is beyond me, but everyone seems excited.

Happy Earth Day!

RE: Happy Earth Day!
I've always wondered why environmentalists celebrate earth day one day a year.

It's a lot like calling yourself religious and only going to church on Easter.

RE: Happy Earth Day!
My other sister's birthday is the 22nd...every year she has an EarthDay Party, where there's an all-organic spread, including organic pop, hotdogs, etc.

I show up anyway.

I just got back, and I'm still kind of drunk (she had it a day early this year).

RE: Happy Earth Day!
We were going to celebrate Earth Day with a great day hike - Lo & Behold ... we woke up to six inches of snow, and it's snowing hard with white out conditions now. Dang! I love the snow, but not when it impacts my plans! I swear I'm going to buy snowshoes & a GPS! No way to get lost then. We will spend our Earth Day indoors, alas.

A good thought for the Earth even though she's not really treated well by most of us.

RE: Happy Earth Day!
I actually got into the woods! After getting some laundry done, moving some junk from the garage to the curb for Monday's "large item" pickup, I was off to the nearby McNaughton mtn bike/XC ski/hike trail about 15 minutes up the road. It was road test time for new Asolo boots and Dart Frog day pack.

The sky was threatening rain (the Weather Channel showed a mass of green coming from the west before I left) but that was part of the point - Goretex boots and a built in rain cover on the pack, plus I had my non-low viz "mango" rain parka. About 44 degrees and wind swaying the tall pines, and it was GREAT. Big bear tracks in two muddy places on the trail gave me pause in both senses of the term. There was not a soul other than me on the four-mile loop I did. The rain held off for two thirds of the hike, starting very light, so I was all buttoned up by the time I reached a warming shelter at the main intersection of the two biggest loops. I sat on a shelter bench and the sky let loose while I gnawed a Clif Bar. The last mile was steady rain, and a big blast of thunder told me it was good I hadn't added the other four miles of the system to the hike. Everything stayed dry but my pants (I still haven't found rain pants I like for a swallowable price, but this puts me on notice - back to STP to bargain shop).

The new gear and I are officially baptised for the new hiking season. A really happy Earth Day here.

Lyra is obviously unfamiliar with MY representative, LOL

The subject of prayer in public schools was being discussed a few years ago and he said, "The little Jewish kids can stand out in the hall."

At least you don't have the Alabama constitution. Did you hear the story on NPR last night? Written 1901 or so, mandates segregation, but keeps taxes under control so its hard to get it changed.

Yaz... be sure to get on his email list so you'll know what he's up to, LOL. He's mostly a rubber stamp for Tom Delay et al.

He did make some waves with 'the Patients' Bill of Rights', from his experience with insurance companies and HMO's when he was still practicing dentistry... but George W. invited him up to the White House, twisted his arm and sweet-talked him a little and he folded.

When he was first elected, I did an Alta Vista search on him and got about 100 hits concerning the American Dental Association, talking about THEIR Man In Washington.

Folks say he was a pretty good dentist, tho'...

How I am going to celebrate earth day.

First I have to change the oil in my SUV. Since the local recyclers charge to take the waste oil I will just dump it in the alley for dust control.

Then I will go cut a load of firewood. I will 4 wheel in the woods and cut down some snags that are home to wildlife, using a chainsaw that makes a lot of noise.

After I get home I will fire up the fossil fuel (propane) BBQ and charbroil some hunks of red meat.

Then in the waning hours of daylight I may go fishing, where I will asphyxiate then gut some poor aquatic creature.
