More Kooks, Less Nukes
About 30 years ago there was a bumper sticker going around- "More Nukes, Less Kooks".
Concern for Environmental, Anti-War, and Social Justice issues was considered "Kooky" by the prevailing right-wing "Silent Majority" of the Nixxon years.

Its Earth Day and I gotta ask, " who are the Kooks now?"

The kooks.....that is for the labelers to know and the kooks to find out. There is a great portion of the population that has been labelled "kook" at one time or another.

RE: More Kooks, Less Nukes
Song abou "Kooks" I sung to my Kids when they were very little (name the artist and the album for xtra points):

"Will you stay in our Lovers' Story
If you stay you won't be sorry
'Cause we believe in you
Soon you'll grow so take a chance
With a couple of Kooks
Hung up on romancing

Will you stay in our Lovers' Story
If you stay you won't be sorry
'Cause we believe in you
Soon you'll grow so take a chance
With a couple of Kooks
Hung up on romancing

We bought a lot of things to keep you warm and dry
And a funny old crib on which the paint won't dry
I bought you a pair of shoes
A trumpet you can blow
And a book of rules
On what to say to people when they pick on you
'Cause if you stay with us you're gonna be pretty Kookie too

Will you stay in my Lovers' Story
If you stay you won't be sorry
'Cause we believe in you
Soon you'll grow so take a chance
With a couple of Kooks
Hung up on romancing

And if you ever have to go to school
Remember how they messed up this old fool
Don't pick fights with the bullies or the cads
'Cause I'm not much cop at punching
Other people's Dads
And if the homework brings you down
Then we'll throw it on the fire
And take the car downtown

Will you stay in our Lovers' Story
If you stay you won't be sorry
'Cause we believe in you
Soon you'll grow so take a chance
With a couple of Kooks
Hung up on romancing

Will you stay, please?"

All the kooks were at Wilson Ceeek, NC this weekend.

It was a terrifyingly traumatic experience -
I only hope that the emotional scars will someday heal.

He he he! Kewl Pekka!

(That and Man Who Sold the World are sadly neglected albums... it was neat that Nirvana covered "Man who sold...")

I am a kook, and proud of it!

I am a non-conforming, anti-everything-to-do-with-big-business, environmentalist, backpacking, buddhist, who drinks to much, and who can't seem to smoke enough of anything!

PedXing, Hunky Dory is truly one of Bowie's finest albums and shows range and originality that solidified in Ziggy Stardust. Ultimately, those two are my favorites by Bowie. Crank 'em.

Where does the drinking and not getting enough to smoke fit in the Eightfold Path? Isn't one of the main themes all about being clearheaded and of a "right mind"?

RE: More Kooks, Less Nukes
Recognizing and learning from ones faults is the only way to enlightenment.
You will never learn will power, if you don't test it.

Would you label my actions as sin?

This is the difference between our paths. I don't look for sin, or the devil in life, and so I have no need to look for a God pulling strings. No miracles, just cause and effect.

Christ healed the sick; the Buddha explained the suffering and taught ways to deal with it.

A women brings her child to the Buddha, and says, my child is dying, can you help me, the Buddha says yes, go get 3 mustard seeds from a family who has never had a death. The women sets off, going door to door, asking if they ever had a death in the family, she soon realized there was no such thing, and that death touches all of us, and she then became a disciple of the Buddha.

The eightfold path is up to each of us to follow when the time is right. You must crawl before you can walk. I was not born a Buddha, but I may be reborn one, maybe even in this life time!

RE: More Kooks, Less Nukes
That wasn?t the meaning of my post CX. I was asking a question about your faith. It seams that a lot of Buddhists embrace drugs and I was wondering if it was against the basic beliefs of Buddhism to rely on mind altering/clouding substances for enlightenment. The hard-core Buddhists I?ve seen don?t rely on drugs or alcohol so it made me wonder. Sadly, many Christians do the same thing. I?m the last one to be pointing out someone?s sins as I?m not spotless. Unless of course that someone is a liberal in which case I feel obligated to straighten them out. LOL, kidding! I?m kidding!

RE: More Kooks, Less Nukes
As I said, you must crawl before you can walk, and you may fall a few times trying. I am just starting to walk, and I fall constantly, but with each fall, I learn something, I am enlightened and reborn each time I stand back up!

Awaking to a world filled with pain
Taken in by a person never known
Attachment to a life shrouded in mystery
Detachment to history
Canceled thoughts
Following sadness
Vehicles of bodies
Crossing rivers of time
Traveling alone
Leaving all behind
Nothingness is_____?

RE: More Kooks, Less Nukes
Yes, Nigal, if you went to a Buddhist community and took vows, you would not likely be smoking or drinking for a long time.
However, can CX continue to legitimately refer to himself as a Buddhist? Anyone have the answer?

RE: More Kooks, Less Nukes
"However, can CX continue to legitimately refer to himself as a Buddhist?"

Sure, why not? He can use the term Buddhist as a label just as some Christians use ?Christian? as a label. Just as Christian means to follow Christ (be Christ-like) so Buddhist refers to being like Buddha. For Tarpy to call himself a Buddhist is no worse than Jesse Jackson calling himself a Christian. The only real difference is that Jesse Jackson can be forgiven of his sins and Tarpy must bare his sins in his next life. This isn?t to judge but to just show the differences in the two beliefs.
