Itchy and Scratchy
This weekend I experienced a burning itch in the inner corners of my eyes, and when I rubbed them to "scratch the itch" it just made them worse. Also I seemed to sneeze more than normal, and my nose became runny.

Sound like allergies to y'all?

This has happened to me a few times before, but I never had allergies before. Can you acquire them as you get older?

Anyone have any good remedies for my symptoms?

RE: Allergies
I've had them this year for the first time I can remember too. Miserable!

You can aquire them anytime and if you move to a different area you're liable to get them then. They also will tone down or dissapeer sometimes as you age.

RE: Allergies
There might be a lot more pollen than usual because of the weather. Here in California a wetter than usual winter usually means more pollen than usual in the spring. Personally, I have allergies all year round every year so I don't know what getting allergies all of a sudden would be like.

RE: Allergies
Buddur,

You can actually develop an allergy at any time in your life. Mine are so bad that I went through 5 years of shots to be de-sensitized.

Yours sound like they can be treated with Claritin or some other presecription med.

Well, I just got back from an "emergency room", and after drinking mass quantities of homebrewed medication...the symptoms seem to have just disappeared! hic

OK, everytime you stop taking it, the concentration of the drug drops to zero. when you start taking it again, then it still takes time to build up in your system before it will work.

We just got back from the Smokies and all of us are sneezing with runny noses. Poor Laurel has it the worst. Every time she sneezes it's 4+" snotcicles down her face. We ran out of kleenex halfway home. Poor thing.

Awful. As a young man I suffered horribly from allergies. Either I was sick and miserable or doped up on the antihistamines of the day. Clartin literally changed my life. That plus Nasonex during the allergy season and I am 100% symptom free.

That said, my oldest son looked like he suffered from the same allergies but nothing worked. We went from medicine to medicine and nothing helped him. I switched doctors and the new doctor (my doctor rather than his pediatrician) said, “Well, if you are treating it like an allergy and he doesn’t respond then it’s probably not an allergy.” He switched my son to “Singulair” and it was like magic. He was like a new kid, all of his symptoms vanished overnight. It turns out he has a mild case of asthma which I have known for years runs in my family. Now the kid that was groggy and miserable all the time flies most of the day!

could have been worse - this weekend on a dayhike I found out I was allergic to bee stings (yellowjackets) - talk about a wake-up call

I was OK mainly because I had antihistimines and albuterol with me but now I have to start packing an Epipen too

wrt ragweed and oak pollen - I used to be badly affected by them also but now that I'm well over the hill I don't get the sneezing/runny nose stuff any more - itchy eyes and ears still are a problem but the sneezing has mostly gone away - of course the trade off is that now I tend to get the occassional mild asthma attack - sigh - if it taint one thing its the other.

Yellowjackets aren't bees. They are wasps. So they can sting you many times unlike a bee that dies after it stings you. I only mention this because the venom of wasps is also different from that of bees so just because you are allergic to one doesn't mean you are allergic to the other (although it is very possible this is the case). The Epipen is not a bad idea. Its much less than an oz of prevention. I am supposed to carry one myself but and dumb and never do.

this is the one I have:
http://www.bytheplanet.com/Products/Yoga/Neti/NetiPots/ancientsecretsnetipot.htm

so I guess a discussion about ear candling is out of the question???

LOL...

nasal solutions didn't work for me - I can't seem to get the stuff in my nose - and drugs - just what I need - sinus drugs give me a buzz...not that that's a bad thing...LOL...

My problem is that the humidity in this office is about zero percent. I'd rather use something more natural than drugs any day - even if it does look strange and I make weird noises while doing it! :):):)

Nasonex (a cortical steroid) works wonders for me. I don't use it year round, only when I know I will be having problems... so a few months out of the year or when I start to show symptoms. It takes about a week to really "kick in" and then I have zero problems.
