Man, I shouldn't have read this thread. Bagless in KY and I are going to Red River Gorge next weekend. It's scary even when you have a friend along if you read this stuff!

RE: TRAIL CREEPS
Oh the web's lousy with Ward Leonard stories. Sounds like your encounter was pretty typical.

Here's a good one from Darth Packman and Ladybug's hiking journal:
Upon descending into Deep Gap, we arrived at the shelter in good spirits for we were done hiking for the day. Soon after we exploded our packs, a strange man arrived and asked if he could bunk with us. Not knowing who this quirky fellow was, we gladly said "yes," but within minutes, we were regretting our own hospitality. We ended up spending the night with the infamous Chip "Ward" Leonard - 10 time thru-hiker and certifiable lunatic. He talked without stopping for 6 solid hours! My ears felt every minute and I soon developed a hideous headache. By the end of the night, I was quite proud of myself for not having committed a violent act against humanity. The next morning, I opened my eyes, rolled over and bumped into Craig and then heard the wretched and piercing voice of Satan. Craig and I scrambled to gobble down some breakfast and load up our packs and soon we were free.

jmgardner-

Don't let this stuff scare you. There are a lot more nuts in 'civilization' than out in the woods.

RE: TRAIL CREEPS
Only ran into one guy that made me a little nervous. It was in the Five Ponds Wilderness of the Adirondacks - way back in near Wolf Pond. I swear the guy was living back up in there. Talked with him for a while - He was a Vietnam Vet and the war was still foremost in his mind - still had the "1,000 yard stare" 30 years later. he carried no pack just a big k-bar knife on his belt. When we finished talking he just walked off into the forest - never saw him again.

RE: TRAIL CREEPS
I met a guy on the lakeshore trail in the Porkies wearing nothing but about 99 peircings, including a chain from his nipple ring to his nose. He jangled as he walked! Not really creepy just amusing.

99 peir-cings
If one of those rings should happen to fall
There would be, 98 peircings on the guy!

RE: TRAIL CREEPS
Le Subtil, was it bug season still in the Porkies? On that Lakeshore trail he could end up with a lot more than 99 piercings. And if it was too cold for bugs, man all that metal must have made for some chilly conductivity to tender parts.

RE: TRAIL CREEPS
If a piercing falls on the trail from a very pierced fellow, wearing not much more, and one of his friends, equally enamored of piercings, should step on the sharp little object with his apparently bare foot, would the barefoot fellow scream in pain or joy as it pierced his sole, or would he know the difference?

If a Porkies black bear should take the pierced hiker's leg in its jaws and provide him with several new piercings, in a very organic way, would the pierced hiker complain to rangers or recommend the encounter to others of his tribal unit?

RE: TRAIL CREEPS
It was August and, indeed, bug season, but hot and windy on the shoreline. I think he was taking advantage of the favorable weather circumstances (he did have a pack).

The mosquitoes later literally chased me and the kids out of the interior. I've never seen them so bad and I grew up on the Tittabawassee river floodplain. I was chewing gum until I noticed it was more mosquito than gum. I could see someone going insane from bugs like that.

Now I carry a headnet!

RE: TRAIL CREEPS
It was day 21 of a 23 day xcountry car trip and after driving for all of the day and into the evening, we settled into a very nice site at Natchez Trace State Park, Tenn. Cooked dinner, cleaned up, showered and hot the hay after a few brews. Early day planned for next. About 11, a group of yahoos blows into the campground withh three pickups, winches, wenches and beer. While several of the loud mouth bastards are setting up camp, a couple others unloaded their ATVs from the trucks and decide it was a good time to scout up some fire wood. I didn't sleep well.

If I tell about my encounters with trail creeps, it will either re-start the "dogs on the trail" thread, or the "gun" thread. You can fill in the blanks.

RE: TRAIL CREEPS
My buddy an' me wuz hitchhikin' (back when it wuz great to be young)to b'ping adventures in the Adirondacks. It was late when a ride dropped us near Speculator, so we walked into the state campground near there run by "Ranger" Ray Jones. He asked if we had a tent, to which we nodded affirmatively. It was late, a dark, moonless night and we didn't wanna be bothered setting it up. We sprawled out ground cloths and bags and fell out. I was with Mr. Misery, who has since become a triple-crowner (AT, PCT, CDT). Anyway, Miz' shouts woke me late at night,"Get that [freakin'] light outta my face!" It was Ray Jones nudging him with the old nightstick, and I was next to be poked. Turns out, we got walked out to the gate and told to hit the road, but we camped FOR FREE coupls hundred yards away. First ride next a.m. tole us the guy was a notorious SOB.

RE: TRAIL CREEPS
Clark Creek Nature Area, Mississippi... well the state should set the tone for this short tale... my partner and I wandered off the gravel improved trail to the primitive trail that was equally rewarding in its challenge and scenery... three miles into our tramp we run into Bubba and his uncle, Jim Bob on their ATV's... dressed in our newest gear and fancy bp duds... I felt like a sweet ham on thanksgiving... The four wheeled red necks informed us that they ran into 'lost folks' back in that area often... with a sideward glance, I was happy that my partner and I are both well over 6 foot and look more like misplaced football players then trampers
