Ohio cops suck, I jst got another %&*&%^(^( ticket from these idiots that have nothing better to do then pick on innocent hikers. You'd think they'd try to do something useful, like fight crime and arrest crackheads like CX, but no... it up the "speeders", we are such a friggin' threat to society!

When I was young(er) I used to do the flashing headlights to alert other drivers of a speed trap. No more. Some folks are in such a G-D hurry, they zip through traffic like they're in the Roller Derby.
Slow down. The life you save might be mine (or someone else.)

Well, now you just have some jerky cops. I thought you had conceded to being a "speeder." Your 4 mph speading was the probable cause they needed to pull you over. Long hair? Dreads? Black? Young? You have been "profiled", boy. How does it feel? It trust you didn't sass 'em. You'd probably have a lump on ya heyad and a resisting arrest charge too.

I've always heard that Ohio was bad for handing out speeding tickets. I've even heard of folks getting tickets in the mail from Ohio and they have never been to Ohio! The cops aren't too bad around here in the Asheville, NC area.

BalsamWolf, I've already admitted my age on TT. I got hassled by Ohio troopers in April 1971 when hitchhiking from Mich. State to D.C. for a big anti-war march (any excuse for a hike, LOL); having survived a warning, my 2 pals and I were watching a patrol car head our way on a cloverleaf at the border, when we were whisked into PA in the knick of time by two furry freaks in a GTO convertible, just like a scene in an underground comic. As me and my 2 partners settled in the backseat, troopers left arresting some other hitchers back on the cloverleaf, the first words said to us by the freak in the shotgun seat was, "Anyone know how to roll?"

Actually, the OSP were called in after the Kent shooting and they ticketed the four for loitering and failure to disperse.

Of course it was the NG, bacpac. It was just an Ohio-authority-based digression, not some accusation; but don't forget the NG is under the governor, just like the state police.

Ohio police especially like Michigan liscense plates. Ya just DON"T speed in Ohio. Now they take your credit card at the side of the road or you go to the station to pay your ticket immediatly if your from out of state. It's such a long state to drive through too and those state cops are everywhere!!!

They might have been training...my buddy who's a cop in VA tells me stories of when he was a rookie, and his training officer used to make him pull cars over and write tickets for practice.
Any old excuse would do, too.

He usually felt like sh!t about it and told the guy if he went to court, he(my buddy) promised he wouldn't show, and therefore get it dismissed. Still sucked, but it was the best he could do.

I got a lot of speeding tickets here in CA when I was around 20 yrs. old. I weaved in and out too much in those days. I got a speeding tic ket from the CHP about 5 or 6 years ago and was just going along like everyone else. I still don't know why he picked me out. Just getting his quota I guess.

I was going to college in Michigan when Kent State happened. One of my fraternity brothers from Lorain, OH, knew one of the students who was killed. He was very upset. Sad day!

I remember thirty years ago when I was in drivers ed we saw several movies. "Blood on the Highway" "Speed Kills", etc and they were very graphic and gory scenes from fatal traffic accidents. I recall that all of them were made by the Ohio State Police.

Hmmm, I guess after making enough snuff movies you could get a little edgy.

RE: I fought the law and the law won
OH cops do accumulate tons of revenue from speeders. And the helicopter police do watch certain highways!!! Actually it's the Highway Patrol and small-town cops that are the most aggressive wrt speeding.

In Akron, you really have to screw up for the cops to pull you over...compared to my hometown "Barney Fife" police attitudes.

My only speeding ticket in this state was one morning after a concert. I yes Sir'ed him with a accepting attitude...heck, I WAS speeding, and got caught...so I didn't argue. He ended up writing in the ticket comment box "polite"! What a consolation ;(

Yes speed can kill. But remember. Speeding a short distance (< 60 miles) saves you less than one minute. So is it with it? I say no know. I had my share when I was younger.

Geuss who pulled us over a county sheriif who knew her. She and he actually exchanged pleasntries while he wrote mt ticket. Not once did she try to get me outta the ticket!!!!! We never went out again.

In my 27 years of driving I've only had one speeding ticket and that was a speed trap in Clinton, NC - I was driving with my Mom and Dad in the car when I got pulled over!
That's not to say I don't go over the speed limit a bit at times! I guess maybe I'm just lucky that I ain't been caught yet! LOL

I have been caught speeding three times in the last twenty years and each time got off with a warning ticket. It must be the fact that I was driving old station wagons or pick-up trucks and looked like I was down to my last dollar (probably was too). Now my wife will get caught and she can't cry or argue her way out of a ticket. I always laugh at her about it and remind her that I always get out of mine. It makes her mad.

RE: I fought the law and the law won
We have some of the finest patrolman on the OSP. I know a guy who went through the OSP basic training and he dropped out. There were ex Marines there that said the OSP training was harder than their basics in the Marines. Living near the I-70 and I-75 intersection (crossroads of America) the OSP here pull literally TONS of drugs off the roads by initiating minor stops. Most times it?s an out of state driver. We just had a bust on I-70 totaling 1,200 of prime weed. We?re talkin? bails of the stuff!

No one likes getting a ticket but if we break the law we should expect nothing less than the law being enforced. Yes, it?s only four miles over the limit but that?s like stealing a six pack at the store and saying, ?Hey, least it wasn?t a case.? And wanting to be let go. Call ?em pricks, call ?em whatever ya want. I call ?em top notch, professional law enforcers.

The last ticket I got was a caffeine induced, race to the trailhead 23 + MPH violation. When the cop asked me if I knew why he pulled me over I looked him right in the eye and said, ?Because I was driving with my head up my ASS.? He said smiling, ?OK. I?m just making sure you know why.? Nice guy. I had it coming.

Nigal, us Hoosiers claim Indianapolis as the "Crossroads of America". Indy has been called that (by Hoosiers at least) since the heyday of the railroads. I65, I69, I70, and I74 intersect there.

Ohio troopers have a longstanding reputation for giving speeding tickets to out of staters, not that I have a problem with that. That's a risk you take when you go over the limit (as I often do).

Hey Spam,
Yep I know where Canton is, although don't know too much about it other than the Paper Mill is there and back in the late 80's I worked with a lesbian woman from Canton for awhile - I think her last name was Stamey. She invited me to Thanksgiving with her partner at her folks place there in Canton. I gathered they're a pretty big family and have lived in those hills for many a moon. :)

RE: I fought the law and the law won
you don't mess with the ohio highway patrol or the national guard either....i learned that the hard way on an early may day in 1970....my girlfriend was a student at ohio state....lived in the twin tower dorms over by the olentangy river....we were drinking in an off campus bar when some guy tells me "the governor declared martial law and there's an 8:00 curfew"....my car is parked at her dorm and we have to get clear across the campus to get to it....i was nineteen and not smart enough to get out of the area immediately, so off we go, dodging teargas and knee knockers....next thing i know a man dressed in a gas mask and brandishing a bayonet is telling me to kiss mother earth....it's a long story from here on out, but the bottom line is....since i was not a student at osu i was eventually judged to be an "outside agitator" and spent three days in the county workhouse for a curfew violation....and the moral of the story is....

mind your manners and watch your back when you are in the buckeye state!!

pekka-
My sister went to Wash DC from Purdue in late April '71 for the "May Day" protest with a bus-load of Furry Freaks.
They lived on "brown rice and greasy gravy" and slept in piles to stay warm.

I tried to meet her at the Lincoln Memorial with a sleeping bag and a bottle of Boone's Farm "wine".....we lived in the DC area.
I waited for hours on the steps and eventually finished the "wine"....shudder!
There were thousands of people and we did not connect.

I remember watching "Mechanized Death" and other Ohio State Patrol movies in driver's ed in the late '60s.
Talk about reality-based shows!

Hey Tom!

I was there! I was in my bunk on a Navy ship in Philly when a guy came down and said there were 300k people in DC at the demonstrations, and did anyone want to go? We hitched down there, my first time in DC, and hung out on the mall below the Washington Monument. I remember seeing busloads of cops, and they wouldn't let you near the White House, (paranoia strikes deep) Finally found the Soldiers/Sailors hostel, got a bunk for $3, and spent the night. Next AM we walked around, the mall was a mess, no grass left, benches burned, bodies in bags laying all over, I assumed only sleeping it off. We hitched out of town and eventually found a couple of Doc's going back to Philly who took us to within a few blocks of the ship.

Those were the days eh? Not sure I would care for the upheaval anymore.

Tom Terrific, my hitch was for the April 21 march, a week before the May Day event. About 500k for the April 21 gig. I have a bunch of B/W photos I took with my first Olympus auto camera. I made three cassette tapes of speeches, marching singers, chants, and people I interviewed (I was in J-School). A girl we met on the Mall put us up at her Georgetown apartment.

The freaks that picked us up at the Ohio line were planning for May Day. The only persons I knew from MSU who went to the latter got scooped up in one of the arrest sweeps very soon after disembarking their vehicle. I was glad I went the week before -- all I got was a hitchhiking ticket from the Mich. State Police after we got dumped at the E. Lansing cloverleaf by our final ride. We didn't want to be on the freeway, and the troopers were headed in at the end of their shift to their post, two blocks from our dorm. And they still cited all three of us.

Post script: By the time I turned 18, I was neither commie nor pacifist. I registered for the draft, and even visited a recruiter.
Not that my politics or philosophy was anything near mainstream. Its just that I came to value freedom, and the free flow of information more and more.

RE: I fought the law and the law won
I was a student at College Park, Maryland.
There was a Mule Train from the SCLC(Southern Christian Leadership Council) that camped at the Univ Md and made the final leg of their march to the Mall in DC.
I believe they started in Boston or something.
This was in preparation for the April 21 thing.
I got a couple dozen cups of coffee to go and intercepted them somewhere on Rhode Island Ave. just inside the city.
I passed out the coffee and joined them.
We ended up at the site of Resurrection City where a civil rights group had camped a year or two prior.

We were singing gospel and protest songs most of the way and chanting anti-war slogans.

The "march" was to be from the Lincoln Memorial to the West Capitol steps.
There were about 500K people on the mall and there was no beginning or end to the "march".
It was just a moving mass of humanity.

The diversity of groups was truly moving.
It WAS America and Americans at their best, well behaved AND vocal!

Vietnam Veterans Against the War had a huge presence.
Their messsage was clear, "Enough is Enough!, get the HELL out of Vietnam!"

Hey I wonder if this story is from Ohio, or maybe Florida! LOL

SPEED LIMIT

Sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a State Police Officer sees a car puttering along at 22 MPH. He thinks to himself, "This driver is just as dangerous as a speeder!" So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over. Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies-two in the front seat and three in the back - eyes wide and white as ghosts. The driver, obviously confused, says to him, "Officer, I don't understand, I was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?" "Ma'am," the officer replies, "You weren't speeding, but you should know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers." "Slower than the speed limit?" she asked. No sir, I was doing the speed limit exactly... Twenty-Two miles an hour!" the old woman says a bit proudly. The State Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her that "22" was the route number, not the speed limit. A bit embarrassed, the woman grinned and thanked the officer for pointing out her error. "But before I let you go, Ma'am, I have to ask... Is everyone in this car ok? These women seem awfully shaken and they haven't muttered a single
peep this whole time." the officer asks.

"Oh, they'll be alright in a minute officer. We just got off Route 119."

Dateline had a thing on TV the other night that all speeders were going to be hit all over America for as much as 1mile and hour over the speed limit. its still speeding they said.and they were getting fed up with people thinking they could always do at least 5 over . so there makeing a big deal out of this.
