Does anybody know whether or not you can take pepper-spray on an airplane? I am off to Dominican Republic in a few weeks (Happy Graduation to ME!!) and I want to have it for hiking.
I doubt that it will be available in the thatch-roofed hut "7-11" there. lol

Anyone, anyone?

I would check with the airline before taking it aboard. After all, it would be hard to hike in the Dominican Republic if you are in jail for interfering with the operations of an airliner.”

Call the airline. I'll bet they'll say you cannot carry it on, even if it is not regulated specifically. It may be considered a weapon in the cabin, but OK if it's packed in checked baggage.”

I would think that putting it in my luggage would be ok...even if not entirely legit. It's a tiny charter flight...I think they should be much more lenient anyway. that's my story and I'm stickin' to it...don't ask, don't tell!?!

“Amy, LH and others are right in warning you to be cautious. If you get in trouble in a foreign country your rights as a U.S. Citizen are worthless. The United States Constitution does not apply beyond our borders, and pepper spray could well be considered a regulated "weapon" there.

I suggest starting with a call to the airline you'll be traveling on. Ask about regulations for carrying the stuff on the plane, and whether they know who to contact regarding customs in the Dominican Republic. The airline may have a phone number for customs at the airport in the Dominican Republic. Also, I'd call the U.S. State Department which is very helpful in advising U.S. citizens travelling abroad.

Whatever you do, be sure to "declare" that you are carrying the spray. If you say nothing, you may look like a smuggler. This is very informal advise so I suggest you speak with those who know.”

“I went thru this on my last trip to AK. Most airlines prohibit pepper spray in carried-on or checked luggage. NO exceptions. I doubt there's an FAA reg that permits one can per passenger, but who knows.

Backpacker Magazine last year (July?) had a story on bear sprays and listed the manufacturers (there are four). Most brands are made in one factory to the other seller's specs.

Call the manufacturer and buy the spray over the phone. The manufacturer (for a price) will then send it to a designated pick-up point at your destination.”

You could bring an empty hand held sprayer/atomizer and some commercial hot pepper sauce (something that would be pass through the sprayer/atomizer). The liquid from a jar of jalepenos would work if you strain out the seeds. Neither would be contraband or a weapon until you put the stuff in the sprayer later.”

DR is cheap, that is true, but also there are many beautiful areas with rainforest, hot springs, mountains, etc etc. I plan on seeing as much of the ecology as possible. not that there won't also be days of sun, surf, and sand. Ahhh, relaxing on the beach surrounded by cabana boyz, to do my bidding in the hopes of landing an American girl. I'll string 'em along til the drinks run out at least...heheheh

I am not going to be anywhere near Haiti...my earlier post was being sarcastic. DR has some beautiful areas to be explored and enjoyed. Just like anywhere you go, having a little common sense and being informed, are imperative.
