Water sources at Red River Gorge?
Guys,

Bagless in KY and I are going to Red River Gorge this weekend. I am concerned that with the try weather, the one water source that we used during our trip will be dry. Does anyone have alternative sources besides just the river that we should consider camping near? Thanks for any advice. :)

Hey jm, good to hear from you. Waqter sources are plentiful at this time of year. Have you picked a route yet? I usually call ahead and see what the conditions are and carry in first days water.Grays arch loop will have water. Shelotwee will have water, and of course swift camp creek will be flowin. There is a nice loop acrooss from the angles window parking lot.#219 and come out on the wildcat#228 5 mileer, If my memorie serves me. Have fun! Yo bear

JM; we are about 7" below average rain fall for the year so far, so you would be right not to trust small streams and springs. In the (almost) twenty years I've been hiking there I've never seen a stream that was big enough to be on a map go dry. My suggestion would be to hike high and camp low. As a rule of thumb, from May to September the ridge top water sources can't be relied on. The exception would be the deer ponds(not on maps) but even after filtering that water still taste a bit funky.

Thanks Walkincrow. :) I think we will stick to well known water sources. I hope all is going well for you. Peg and I had such a wonderful time last year. Thanks for letting us participate in the outing. Have a great weekend.
