Drying Tomatoes “I am drying lots of foods for our trip in June (between 6 & 9 people). We would like to do some tomatoes. I have an american harvest dehydrator, with the temp. control. I have this great greek seasoning that is very yummy on tomatoes, does anyone season them as they dry? Any other things that might be yummy?” 11:57:13 AM 5/03/01 RE: Drying Tomatoes “Grits are yummy. So are chitterlings. Ramen noodles? Tuna-in-a-pouch? Hmmm... that pretty much covers everything I know.” 12:37:57 PM 5/03/01 RE: Drying Tomatoes “McDonald's will soon serve MacChitt'lins and MacMountainOysters in the South. Are they "nice tomatoes"?” 1:03:57 PM 5/03/01 RE: Drying Tomatoes “We dry tomatoes all the time in the dehydrator, but have never used any seasoning when drying. We use them in dishes all year long until the new crop is harvested.” 1:11:25 PM 5/03/01 RE: Drying Tomatoes “I cut and dry those little Roma tomatoes and a cucumber. I then mix it with a cold-rehydrated pack of ramans. Yummy! I only add spices on the trail because they are fresher that way and the heat of the drying can intensify the flavors.” 1:22:51 PM 5/03/01 RE: Drying Tomatoes 1:44:54 PM 5/03/01 RE: Drying Tomatoes “Thanks for the link Bacpac!” 2:00:51 PM 5/03/01 RE: Drying Tomatoes “I take the toms and blanch them for a couple of mins then peal and slice before drying. Rinds are tough. Spice em up just be careful, last time I spiced up grn beans they were way to salty! 2cents!” 2:38:05 PM 5/03/01 RE: Drying Tomatoes “I dry alot of strawberries and apples every year. I love dried spinach and mushrooms to add into mixes. Shrimp sliced longways in half dry very well also. Plan to start making leathers soon. Going to try to do veggie chili also.” 8:42:01 PM 5/03/01 RE: Drying Tomatoes “how do you dry spinach?” 10:03:01 PM 5/04/01 RE: Drying Tomatoes “take off the tough stems. leave them uncooked and dry them either in a oven or regular dehydrater. Works well. Just boil alittle water on the trail and chuck it in. It cooks/re-hydrates immediately. You can also add in the bag butter buds.” 10:57:48 PM 5/04/01 Tomatoes are taking over the house! “Could you kind folks give me specific instruction as to how to dehydrate tomatoes? Do you have to blanch them? Do you have to peel them? Do you season them? Can you die if you do it wrong? I have an "American Harvester" Dehydrator and a proliferation of tomatoes.” 8:13:07 AM 8/17/07 “http://www.seasonalchef.com/tomdehyd.htm#Dehydrator%20Drying I just slice the tomatoes thin and put them in the dehydrator. last edited: 8/17/07 8:20:35 AM” 8:19:08 AM 8/17/07 “dried tomatoes are yummy” 12:01:30 PM 8/17/07 “I "just slice the tomatoes thin and put them in the dehydrator" like you said, Ewker. We will see how they turn out tomorrow. thanks...I think.” 5:52:43 PM 8/17/07 “? last edited: 8/17/07 5:53:34 PM” 5:52:46 PM 8/17/07 “They turned out great. I put a very small amount of salt and pepper on them. Good and easy.” 4:45:10 PM 8/19/07 “I told you it was easy :)” 8:59:05 PM 8/20/07
