Forhead sweat-yuck - what to use to prevent?
Planning my first season hike in a few weeks. Haven't been hiking in nearly 5 years. If I'm going on this June trip to White Mountains, I wanna be able to keep up! :)

Anyway, my forhead always sweat like a MF in the heat. I hate using my arm to wipe it - too dirty. What do you guys use to soak up the sweat? I see some people using bandanas, but I'd like your input on what's the best and easiest, while still keeping your head reasonably cool.

Thanks!

I understand Dave. Any hat I've worn much in hot weather ends up with nasty sweat stains around the forehead part of the headband. If I'm not wearing a hat, which is rare, I'd use a bandana. When I am wearing a hat on the trail in warm/hot weather, the bandana is around my neck. Maybe its my old Boy Scout training, but a neckerchief is a handy item in a handy place on the trail.

I like to wear my canvas floppy "Gilligan" hat. Protects from sun and soaks the sweat. If it gets nasty I'll just rinse out in a stream or other relatively clean water source. It wouldn't be a problem to throw in the washer either.

I usually wear a hat. I also have a towel tied to my pack so I can swipe away the sweat without having to open my pack. You needn't worry Dave; I too sweat like a stuck pig when I hike so you will not be alone.

I find that a wide-brim synthetic hat -- I personally use one from Columbia -- works well and can be rinsed in a stream or other water source and dries quickly. Be sure the band is cloth and not leather or a similar smooth surface.

Dave, I'd like to suggest just getting a stick on antipersperant and rubbing it all over your face.

Just kidding. I too have a problem with that and I find a bandana is the best.

I use a leopard skinned Grand Poohbah hat, the exact same kind Mr. C used in Happy Days. It soaks up the sweat and provides great cammo out in the bush.

mmmmmmmmm...can't wait for the NH Hike, now! LOL

Any other sweaty mules? ...how 'bout you, Ped? Telemark? Walkindude?

oooh, I can't wait! heheheh
(did I mention that I am in the midst of a breakdown?) >;oP

A bandana is a must for me in the heat. It keeps my hair out of my face and its great for dunking at streams, etc, to be wrung out over the head for a cool off.

coolmax bandana - I sweat a lot and coolmax (as usual) is way better than cotton.

What about those goofy looking sweat bands that people use sometimes in the gym. They are made out of a stretchy towel like material.

Snails Pace, unless DaveAnderson is 6'5" or more, he won't be able to pull off being an NBA player. Being black would help too, lol.

RE: Forhead sweat-yuck - what to use to prevent?
A hat, I would never go backpacking without a hat. I normally wear a Columbia water proof boonie hat. I don't hike much when it gets warm, but when I do I take a mesh baseball hat.

I wear a hat outside almost anywhere. Warm in the Winter and constant shade in the Summer. I get a big laugh out all the morons squinting with their baseball caps on backward, but I have always been a 'form follows function' kinda guy.

Since I am kind of a quirky guy I will share one of my quirks. When I start an uphill I take my hat off and hold it in my hand. When the trail levels out I put it back on.

Too much sweat or not enough of it can be a sign that you are out of shape or sick, I thought. Just remember to drink lots of water before hitting the trail.

Bandana, palm, forearm all work for me too. I rarely wear anything on my head. Caps and hats and bandanas etc. in my book, help to retain heat. SO carry a bandana in a pocket or attached to pack. Wear a hat when in the sun. Sweat is cooling on the skin, so avoid wiping forehead dry all the time, just enough to keep sweat out of the eyes should do. Just an opinion.

Briar, Wearing a hat cools your head. It provides shade. If you begin to sweat remove it for a few minutes and enjoy a breeze.

A hat is one of the essentials.

Do you golf?
I have a golf towel that has a gromet and caribiner looking thing that I attach to my backpack when hiking in the heat.
I'm not a big fan of wearing a hat either, I find I get really hot in them.

I saw a guy who wacked himself in the head during a trail work party and he used his girlfriend's pantyliner for a bandage. eeeewwwwaa! Think they would be good for sweat too? HA!

RE: Forhead sweat-yuck - what to use to prevent?
The good thing about my boonie hat compared with my ball caps is the easy washability. Plus they come in different weight fabrics -- the all cotton ripstop models are the coolest (and you can get desert tan if you want a lighter color than OD), with screened grommet vents. If you get really hot, just dip it in water and let it do the evaporation thing on your noggin.

As for those terrycloth sweatbands, jeez, you'd look like some 80s MTV band, like Loverboy. Spandex hiking tights in jewel colors anyone?

I'm not a hat person. It's just so...barbianish. :) I should've mentioned that in the original post.

I think I'll try out a bandana. And maybe that car door idea too.

Hat or bandana. Always. It's really irritating to have a drop of sweat run down the inside lense of my glasses.

Bandanas always leave a tan line that makes me look stupid [place smarta@@ comeback here:_______]. I nopw have a new trail hat that is a cotton Guiness boony hat (thanks Joy and Hyper!) that is the bomb! I too take it off on up hills and then put it back on when I have cooled down. A wet cotton hat in summer is a very god way to cool down. I shaved the old head before my last hikle and got sun burned bad. Worste case of danderuff I've ever had!

I use the Bandana around the forhead, and at every stream I come to I dip it in it, nothing like the cool water dripping down my face in the heat.

I also must cover this sexy bald head, sunburn=cancer you know!Hell my body is covered in hair and I get soaked most of the time! Kooler, nakid! Mohaaaaa! Tie a bandana (or packtowl) to your pack so it will be over your shoulder when you put the pack on. Grab and wipe as needed.

I always wear a hat outside so I need to know, why are hats "barbianish" and what the heck does "barbianish" mean anyway?

Wait for the sweat to roll down your nose - blow up and launch the bead of sweat onto a rock as you are walking.

Fun for the whole family!
