Car Camping in Hillbilly Land
What a bummer, I have to go car camping this weekend when I was supposed to go on a hike. We have a rookie coming with us that doesn't have hiking shoes, or a pac, so it's beers by the fire and NASCAR talk til' 2:00. Help! I can almost guarantee some dude named Buddy will be camped next to us in his Colman Super 500 XLT Tent with 4 rooms and he'll have the 1978 Ford F-350 supercab hooked up to his car battery powered spotlight lookin' around for the bag of weed he dropped. So much for a nice relaxing weekend!

If anybody is going to Ohio Power (old strip mines) in Sou. Ohio, I'll be the only one there without Coleman products, stop and say hi!

Why do you "have to go?" You married or something? I know some folks are rude and clueless to outdoors etiquette, I just didn't think it fair to categorize all Coleman equipment as belonging to the rabble. ;-)

...and iffin ya can't go packin', I suppose car-campin' is the next best thing. At least you get to be outdoors having fun (if you let yourself).

Okay, I just reread your post. You couldn't scrounge another backpack for your friend? Tennis shoes work fine, and you could go in at least a few miles. If they still have fun, you may have just made a new BP'ing partner. Those are scarce ya know!

I got to go along with the rest of the bunch here. If it gets you out of the house and next to nature, it`s all good!

I do the car camp thing at least a couple times a year.
Take the whole frigging house, the big blow-up mattress, and real pillows. Oh, and you gotta take the dutch oven.
As for the NASCAR fan, excuse yourself early, and go throw your bed behind a tree. Somewhere quiet.

The closest I'm getting to nature this weekend is planting annuals in my garden. Take it where you find it and enjoy it as best you can....at least you can get out there...didn't somebody on this board post this week about getting rid of his stuff due to injuries? Make that lemonade out of them (perceived) lemons!

Back from Hillbilly Land - they played Anthrax until 3:00 a.m., and loud. Lots of NASCAR Apperrel and I saw at least 2 coleman XLT 500 10 room tents. No Mas!

I find folks down south much nicer than up here in the north. I've ran into more disrespectful white trash in the north than the south. Stupid people are a representation of people, not geography.

Car Camping is a waste of time unless it's only to get you a nights sleep during a travel to somewhere farther out. If these people are "Real" friends, you'll drag their drag em outta the "car camping" gig and put a pack of some kind on their back and show em real fun.
NASCAR & Anthrax are a couple of things I really dig but I'd rather be on the trail.
Don't dis Coleman. I gotta lot of Peak 1 gear and it's real good stuff for the price.
As far as the "Hillbilly" stuff, you'll be OK unless you start hearing banjo music. If you, you may get to practice your pig squeeling immitation.

Good Luck man.

Thanks for all the support and advice after my traumatic experience. I did learn 3 valuable lessons from the trip. 1. People still wear stone washed jeans. 2. NASCAR races are actually broadcast on the radio. 3. Shooting fireworks is a year round hobby for some people.

Nigal, so you're saying that Southern Ohio folks are nicer than the ones in Northern Ohio? Or were you talking about the Southern US? If so, I think you're tilting at windmills...I can't see where anyone slammed Dixie.

RE: Car Camping in Hillbilly Land
Trailbuddie?s original post made the assumption that this sort of thing only goes on in ?Hillbillyland?. Even the use of the word hillbilly might be used as a derogatory label as in; ?Hum, those people are wearing NASCAR shirts, playing Anthrax late and loud and they are in cheap tents therefore they MUST be hillbillies!?

As a matter of facts he never even said where he was camping at. For all we know he could have been camping in Ohio somewhere.

RE: Car Camping in Hillbilly Land
I was camping in Ohio, and I "labeled" them hillbillies because of the stone washed jeans and the lack of teeth. When I use the term hillbilly, I don't mean to upset the white trash and rednecks living throught the North or the South.

By the way, the capital of Hillbilly Land is Gatlinburg, which is in the South. I base this on the number of Old Tyme Photo Shops within the city limits, Gatlinburg has the highest per capita in the U.S. Even the presence of a strong Hiking store like The Happy Hiker can't take the title away.

RE: Car Camping in Hillbilly Land
hillbilly; (often disparaging) a person from a backwoods area, especially from the mountains of the southern US

Such people can be found anywhere in the US where there is poverty, ignorance, and low culture.

I use the word loosely and usually with affection.
I have kin from West Virginia, Western Maryland, and Southern Pennsylvania.
To mention ONLY those from mountainous areas.

I'd say "hillbilly" is a state of mind more than a place.

RE: Car Camping in Hillbilly Land
Auto racing - from Formula One to Baja - has developed many of the modern applications that we now take for granted, ie, antilock brakes, electronic fuel injection, etc.

My (arguably) best student EVER (500 to date) is an accomplished banjo player. His band is Whitepath - look for their CD's in your favorite music store.

Camp your own camp.

State park campgrounds beat motels hands-down. Plus, there's a certain appeal to sleeping in a "gated" community.

"Public access" areas are a different story, tho...

I would have been dead from exposure/starvation at an early age if it wasn't for Coleman.

I think Nigal was right about the jerkoffs being concentrated in Ohio.

RE: Car Camping in Hillbilly Land
1. IRL, F1 and rally are way better then NASCAR (and CART for that matter). It's not a wase of resources. (only NASCAR and CART are)
2. I own a Colman tent, but it's peak series, so it is not hick.

Did they have a gun rack in the back of the truck? That's how you gauge the hick level. It's like a meter. The more racks, the more hick, then once the racks top out, then you start counting guns. I once saw someone who rated 12. Six slots and six guns. Don't know how he could see out his back window.

Yeah, our jerkoffs aren't as big as others but they are more potent. Ya have to add a little water to them to make 'em normal jerkoffs. Ya know, kinda like orange juice?

Nigal-
You're all wet!

Car camping is great!

I know of several nice NatFor camp sites in WVa....all built by the CCC(that's Crazy Communist Comrades) in the '30s.
One of them is $5(honor box) and the others are free.
One of the freebees has a good trout stream and can be populated on good weekemds by trailer-draggin' hillbillies.
These jokers will bring generators, TV's, and even lawnmowers!!!

They be GOOD folks though and most will lend ya a chainsaw or most ANYTHING if'n ya need it!

I'm not a NASCAR fan, but I gotta tip my hat to the last two Atlanta 500s (or whatever the race is called these days).

Last year, Dale Earnhart won by, like, .00001 seconds. Thrilling finish. This year, Dale's car (now painted differently) won again by as close of a margin. VERY thrilling finish. It was the first victory for Dale's crew since his death at Daytona. Pretty good stuff, I must say.

Well, I must say that I am truely sorry that I offended the entire state of Arkansas with my views on HillBillies. If you want to call me elitist, so be it, but the fact remains that people who have little Calvin's in their truck window, peeing on a Ford or Chevy sign, along with a 3 tiered gun rack(deathmarch), are societal misfits.

RE: Car Camping in Hillbilly Land
I think I car camped once. I pulled my car into the only spot left in what would have been an open field.

Everyone else was in separate campers or ones that are placed on a truck bed. Beers were being passed around, and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.

I knew it was time for an attitude adjustment on my part. LG & I set up our tent, then I opened the car door & listened to music from the stereo. I sang in low tones and drank inexpensive champagne and danced in the moonlite night. I laughed and enjoyed myself.

It was fun for what is was. I do prefer solitude and the peacefulness you find on the trail.

I did go motorcycle camping too in more seclusion. I didn't want to leave my bike at any hiking trailhead due to thefts, so I rode around the small town with their pretty parks. That was fun too.

RE: Car Camping in Hillbilly Land
Me thinks you folks are afraid of these "hillbillys". Hmmmm...?

Upon coming out of the Cheaha Wilderness, AL (see "The Eleventh Commandment" thread), I was soon joined at the trailhead by a couple of boys in a PU truck. After a few minutes of small talk, one of the guys offered me a beer. Then another. And another.
"Aw, what the hell - how 'bout one more?"

This was a Sunday, and the nearest legal beer was two hours away in ATL. Thank God for them good 'ol boys!

I "run" with a bunch of trotline runnin', deer skinnin', river rats from time to time. Don't let their looks fool you. One of them - I'll call him "Matt" - is one of the most intelligent individuals I've EVER known... bar none. They have taught me alot about the backcountry that we don't ordinarily learn as backpackers. I can remain quite comfortable around "hillbillys".

One afternoon, an old girlfriend (Mel) and I stopped at the Sack-o-Suds - the store featured in the movie "My Cousin Vinny". The Sack is located adjacent to a bridge that crosses the Ocmulgee River, GA. Unbeknownst to me, "Matt" was fishing the river, and noticed my rig when we pulled in. Mel stayed in the truck while I went in to get a sack of suds. Meanwhile, "Matt" came up the riverbank, and approached my truck. Doing his best Deliverance character, "Matt" asked Mel to give him a ride to town. Mel was petrified. She said something to the effect that he would have to ask her "husband". LOL! This went on for several minutes.

By the time I came back out, Mel was next to tears - "Matt" had really worked her over.

Mel is a good sport, and we all had a good laugh before it was all over. It was a VERY FUNNY episode.

You folks should loosen up a little, dismount your high horses, and get to know these people. I did, and have made some life long friends in the process.

Oh yeah!
A couple of weeks ago, I got into a conversation with a mullet guy at the local sports bar. A solid hour into the conversation, we discovered that we were classmates in school from 4th thru 10th grades. We spent the next two hours catching up on things. I'm looking forward to seeing Perry again - he's a helluva nice guy (and always was).

Thanks for the input gojo, I am sure there are some great "hillbilly" lookin' people out there. i have run across a few myself, however, the point I am making is this: When I use the term hillbilly, i am mainly attributing the term to the way these people act, the look is just an easy target to poke fun at.
