Cumberland Island Trip Report

“Gojo, I have an Old Town Loon 160 tandem with rudder. The color is "granite", which translates to very light gray. You can see a picture of it and get the specs at the REI site. We have discovered that we like seperate boats better than all that togetherness;-) The only time I was taking it out was when we had the nephews with us. One of the nephews just moved across the country and the other got his own kayak for his birthday. It hasn't seen water since last fall and would like a good home where it can get lots of use.”

“I'm jealous!!! I went camping/hiking about a month or so ago, not at cumberland but at hunting island, where my friend is a naturalist. Anyhoo, we didn't backpack cause it would have been too hard for a couple of the friends that came along. No problem I think, we'll cook oysters, drink beer, play guitars, sleep, then hike the next day. Well the bugs were bad and a few drops of rain fell from the sky (my favorite time to be outside!) so the next day over my protests, we just packed up and left!!! I was P.O.'ed, to say the least. I don't have many weekends off so I make do with whatever nature throws out and just enjoy the beauty. My other friends only do things on perfect days. A couple of others that went with us would have gone hiking if the spoilsports weren't around. Oh well, I'll have a day job in a few months and more weekends off. Plus more time to make new friends that actually do something.

WD and LH, those stately looking low-limbed trees are called Live Oaks. Perfect climbing for kids, and I'm surprised that with all the hiking you guys got in, you never saw any coons up in them. Hey WD you got any palmetto stabwounds, hehe??”

“Naw Ape. I survived the Palmettos. I'd hate to fall into one though.
We saw coons but I just didn't get any pictures of any. We stood in our camp and watched a coon trying to find something to raid in our neighbors camp. Too funny!”

“Trip sounded great, but then again most from Cumberland do. I am headed down in a month and going to explore the northern end for a few days. Any must sees that any of you recommend? And has anyone had any luck with finding clams to eat on the island? Damn its going to be hot. Thanks.”

“I've eaten the !$%& out of some clams on Cumberland. Got 'em at the southern end tho. Should be able to find them in any tidal mudflat.”

“Do the South Cut Trail. Tell me if you see any gators. I didn't see any but Rad, OM, Gojo, & Sarabelle did just a couple of weeks before.
Do the Rollercoaster Trail. That's pretty cool.”

“There's an isolated house at Booger Bluff - they have tons of clams in their freezer.”

“I definitely plan on hitting rollercoaster. I guess it all depends on how well I can handle the heat. If its too bad, I'll just hang out at the Southern end.”

Hey, if it's too hot down south, pack up and make the trip to Indiana - it is only in the 50s here. If you don't mind a little rain, it could be considered perfect weather.”

I was wondering where you've been hiding.”

“Just got back from Cumberland, it was great. Weather was great, not too hot and no rain. Spent 2 nights at Brickhill, which is awesome, a night at Stafford and a night at Sea Camp. Explored a bunch of the island, thought Rollercoaster was awesome. Found the canoe at Lake Whitney and there was also a rowboat but didn't use them. Didn't see any gators, although two guys that I camped near saw one on South Cut, and also a bobcat near Brickhill. Got bit up by some bugs but no biggy. Loved it all.”

“Cool. Glad to here you enjoyed it. The Rollercoaster Trail is pretty fun! I saw those boats at Lake Whitney too. If I had time to kill, It would have been fun to cruise one for awhile.”
