Poll: Camp Chair or Tree Stump?
Here's the age old question. Which is better? A camp chair or tree stump.

I know some of you good ol' boys might own stock in Coleman, but I still prefer Ms. Mother Nature's lazy boy, the tree stump.

Well, I know your wife prefers a tree stump too, but most of us still like the comfort of a Crazy Creek Camp Chair, the greatest invention since The Mullett

Rocks, logs, whatever is avaliable. Usually it's a Z-Rest between my butt and the ground.

I can do without either - I have no qualms about sitting on the ground. I would certainly sit on a stump or log bench if one was there, but I'm not planning on purchasing a chair.

RE: Poll: Camp Chair or Tree Stump?
No general, it's the old age question. Back when I was young and stupid, I used to make do with whatever would support my butt. Now that I'm a little older, and a little less stupid, I consider my camprest a piece of essential equipment. There's nothin' finer, after a long day on the trail, than a hot meal and reclining in that camprest. Well, ok, I can think of something finer, but it's still pretty fine.

camping chairs weigh too much. after lugging one around for a bit, my eyes caught a nice, small box, with a lightweight godsend: a hammock.

Tree stumper here, but I gotta admit I get a bit jealous of the camp chair people on the ECT trips. It's alot more comfortable on a tree stump if you don't have to look over and see someone lounging comfortable in a camp chair. I'll probably look into getting one this summer.

Therm a rest or lightweight hammock. These old bones hurt if I sit on the ground to long now.

I have a Thermarest chair kit, but rarely use it. I usually just put a pad down up against a tree.

I like my thermarest chair kit, because I use it for sleeping too. Mother nature doesn't always put a stump in a great viewing spot.

I can do without, but my back and butt prefer that I take a camp chair...

Actually I find that I am more comfortable and rested when I take a chair. For me this means better hiking on the following day.

It used to always be rocks, stumps and logs (ants, pitch and splinters).
Now I let Larry carry my little short legged sand chair.
Two pounds. I can sit in that and cook my dinner, and it's not as hard to get out of as a therma-chair or a sling-lite.
Man...
Those sling-lites are made for contortionists.

Unroll your sleeping bag halfway. Sit on the rolled-up half and cross your legs on the other half. Meditate until your legs fall asleep.
Camp chairs are for wusses.

Camp chair for those short hikes where a heavier pack doesn't really matter.

Butt size piece of close cell foam for those longer trips.

Hey, I just ran across this on rei.com. I am not sure if it is a REI sale or a Cascade Designs sale, but you can get a free Platypus bladder when you buy a Therm-a-rest chair adapter. I was thinking about getting one of the chair adapters anyway, so I went ahead and bought it.

RE: Poll: Camp Chair or Tree Stump?
Rock, ground or log. Seldom a tree stump, sap comes out of them and ruins the seat of your pants.

I prefer a slightly inclined ledge overlook and I keep my pack on and lean against it. Makes a great recliner.

RE: Poll: Camp Chair or Tree Stump?
I took a new Ridge Rest full length on my last trip. I cut 1/4 of it off for a sitting pad and used that to sit on. I left my Therma-a-Rest ultra lite long and the chair kit at home.

Next time, I'll be carrying 10 more oz. of chair kit if I can get the Ridge Rest to fit inside. IMHO, the chair kit is definitely worth the extra 10 oz.

RE: Poll: Camp Chair or Tree Stump?
I have yet to invest in a chair or the kit thingamajiggy. It never really bothered me not having one or seeing others in one. But I may purchase one just to have it in the arsenal of gear. I normally sit on the ground or lean up against a tree. Always placing a plastic bag/liner/pad underneath me so I don't absorb moisture from the ground.

RE: Poll: Camp Chair or Tree Stump?
I got two "soccer chairs" from Target that weigh about 1.5 lbs. each. They were on sale for five bucks at the time. They are like light camp stools with backrests. Definitely worth the weight in my opinion. I don't like sitting on the ground. I am interested in MP's Slinglight chair though. Where'd ya get it? What did it cost? Is it still available anywhere? Can it be seen on the 'net?

The Sling-Light home page is http://www.slinglight.com/. The best price I've found is at http://www.cpostores.com/boundarywaterscatalog/. I've been thinking about getting one, but I'm not sure if it'd be worth the price. Plus, it might be a little big to strap on my pack.
