OK. This was weird.

I pulled into the bank drive-through this morning and this evil bird landed on my passenger’s side mirror and proceeded to battle with his reflection. I think he wanted a piece of me too!

Damn, and I thought "bizarre wildlife behaviour" was when someone puked at the party.

SULLIVAN, N.Y. May 27, 2005 — Car owners around town are covering their mirrors in an attempt to outsmart a woodpecker who apparently thinks his reflection is an enemy.

Tim Taylor, who owns Thruway Auto Glass, said he replaced 30 smashed mirrors last year and 18 this year because of the bird, which has claimed this area east of Syracuse as his territory.

"People come in pretty mad. One guy's been in here three times already because he keeps forgetting to cover up the mirrors," Taylor said

During breeding season, male woodpeckers aggressively defend their turf, even against imaginary foes, said bird-watcher Benjamin Burtt.

Anne Miller has had two mirrors on her Pontiac Grand Prix smashed and watched the bird attack her neighbor's Malibu.

"I told him to shoo. He did. Then he came right back and finished the job," she said. "Instead of flying off, he walked across the windshield and did the passenger mirror. I was flabbergasted."

Hmmm, must be an eastern problem, here in the midwest that bird wouldn't have made it that far, call it barbaric, I call it effective.

Leighann Niles, 35, was driving her 2004 Toyota Matrix south on North Buck Road when a bald eagle flew over her vehicle and dropped a moderate-sized freshwater drum, or sheepshead, from about 40 feet onto her windshield, shattering the glass.
[...]
Not long before the flying fish, she said she was driving west on Interstate 480 when a semi truck hit a small bird and shot it into her back passenger door, startling her 5-year-old daughter. “I said, it’s OK honey — thank God it didn’t hit my windshield,” Niles said. “An hour later, we’re coming into Marblehead ... and I look in the air and see the most beautiful eagle i’d ever seen in my life. “The next thing I knew, the fish wiggled — it dropped like a brick and completely shattered my windshield.”
