Bug Headnet Improvements
Some of you have probably read my other thread Black Fly Blues about how I was eaten alive by black flies. Well, I've decided to arm myself before I go back out there this weekend. I dislike wearing a headnet because of it's vision restrictions so I devised a way to overcome it.
I cut two holes in the front to fit my sunglasses into so I'm not looking through the mesh. To make the mesh stick to your glasses, stick velco hook tape to the rims and just stick on the mesh. It works great, but I will admit it looks like a Halloween mask. If it keeps me from being bitten again who cares. I don't want to show up in the doctor's office again next week.

Can you maintain clearance over you nose? Could they bite through the mesh openings if there is direct contact of flesh and mesh?

I have a cheap headnet that I bought last summer. I haven't worn it yet, but I figure it is very light and takes up next to no room - I would rather carry it and not use it than get eaten up by flies.

Pekka, I believe I have enough clearance with the way I arranged the hook tape on my glasses. If not I'll figure out a way even if I have to put a band aid on my nose. I just can't go through that again and I'm not staying home just because the bugs are out.

I'd just hate to imagine you with your nose eaten away, LOL!

As for staying home, I've decided to try and find other destinations during black fly season, places that are free of them, or at another stage in the seasons. They drive me nuts.

They drive me nuts too, but I have to get out there and fish to maintain my sanity. If that makes any sense.

Well, there's always casting to bonefish and permit in the Florida Keys until things clear up on the local creeks.

That can greatly enhance your sanity, if not your pocket book.

RichB- I'm camping this weekend in NY north of Poconos with girl scouts. Is there a way to find out if there is a bug problem there? There is no on-site manager there. I just sent an email warning everyone to bring netting. The kids would love your idea of velcro around the sunglasses. They'll be ready for midnight raids on each other for sure.

Florida is a bit of a jaunt for me so I'll have to endure the local conditions. The flies shouldn't be out in full strength much longer.

RE: Bug Headnet Improvements
Young&Creaky, I think you should be prepared for bugs no matter where you go this weekend. PA or NY are likely to be infested and May seems to be a bad month for them. I usually go out to Pine Creek in Central PA. to fish and I know the black flies are at their worst in the first 2 weeks of May. I try to go in June because of this, but by then the streams may be too low to fish. The bugs out there are worse than my local bugs by far. You should definitely be prepared for bugs. Hope you have a great trip.
