Costume Hiking.....
Last weekend Radagaset, Walkingdude, and I went to Cumberland Island GA. After hiking about 30 miles Rad had an interesting suggestion:

He suggested that a group get together for a hike...but theres a twist....Everybody has to hike in a goofy costume!

Can you imagine how fun that should be? And the crazy looks we would get from the average passer-by!

Anybody interested?

I just did that today when I fished with my modified bug headnet. Nobody was around to see me though.

I've been thinking a similar thought for years. How about hiking down Bright Angel Trail in a tutu. A little lace parasol?? Or an evening dress with long gloves???

We actually did something like this on a river trip years ago. All the women packed a floor length dress. We sure had fun with bare feet on the beach and our gowns one evening.

Is this for Halloween, or can we go in Drag?

Dressing like the characters in the Rocky Horror Picture Show would be nice....

Well Wally, What other creative ideas did these two have? Are you sure it was thirty miles and not thirty cans of beer?

I think it could be the next fad. How about dressing as mountain men and mountain women? Or better yet, Xena and Hercules!

Funny story: At Philmont one of fo the challenging hikes is to the top of Mt. Phillips. A female rangers told us a story of how she hiked up to the top of Mt. Phillips one morning in a bathrobe and curlers. The She walked up to one of the Scout Crews with a toothbrush in her had and asked them if they knew where the bathroom was. I would love to have seen their reaction.

Most of the camps we visited were themed and the staff dressed and played the roles very well: Mountain man, mining, logging, western, etc.

Last week when we were hiking the Waterloo trail that goes right by a prison I told Hyper that with our buzz cuts, we needed to get a couple prison jumpsuits and hike up and down that section of trail and ask every person we come to where the trailhead is and what kind of car they drive and which way Mexico was.

Elevation of about 6K in the Olympics one day, a hiking buddy appears for that day's hike in a grey pinstripe three piece suit, with white shirt and tie. He had even buffed his hiking boots the night before. Wore that suit all day, and got some ama-zing looks from other hikers.

When I asked him what in the Hell he was doing, he said he was just trying to impress the ladies. He did look dapper..... but he didn't score any phone numbers.

Costumes, it sounds like fun. I had a new boyfriend long ago that came to my house for the first time wearing a tuxedo shirt. I was mortified to have him meet my parents.

strider, your friend reminds me of this documentary I saw on tv last night. This man went to Africa decades ago looking for gold. They showed a picture of him and he was all daper in this suit while standing in the middle of the jungle.

Okay, it wasn't Africa it was South America and he was an explorer. He disappeared. It is said that the natives killed him for his concern about gold and not the tribal people.

I would like to try hiking and camping the way early American explores like Lewis & Clark or Daniel Boone, etc. but without most if not all the new age gear. Primitive and rustic to the core for the most part. Using what mother nature has provided us.

RE: Costume Hiking.....
Bikers have this down. Jacque Phelan ("Alice B. Toeclips," I believe) used to mt. bike race in spiffy-if-not-outlandish dress outfits. Lipstick and fingernail polish were musts (even if there was a ton of dirt and grease on those fingernails, too)

And on RAGBRAI (The [Des Moines] Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa---It's the grandaddy of'em all!), well, you should see the outfits! Some local guys made a magazine article with their dragwear. But there's outfits of all kinds.

People usually form "teams" to ride and then they get crazy. They get stickers made up and will ride up to you and slap them on your helmet. I was "boned" by Team Bone one year. heheh....

And you gotta like the full bar they pull in the BOB trailers. (do not confuse with AmyG's bob!)

Fun sh!t man!!
