I'm sure you could easily drum up a couple people for a day hike atleast.

I'm pretty booked this summer. I'm taking the plunge and getting married July 21.. so that is keeping us busy. Plus we just bought a log home this winter so that has been keeping us busy on the weekends.

But if I am free I will make it.

In WA, we have a tri-cities area.

I used to hike in Bear Mountain. That's where I started hiking before I left for WA. I can remember doing Mt. Taurus. I can't remember the others.

I traveled on the subway & LIRR to get their from Brooklyn. I enjoyed the views of the Hudson River.

I knew what he meant. I am in western Morris county, born in Princeton. You're going to the Catskills with the girl scouts, M&M? That's great, I'm hoping to plan a trip there with a few girl scouts this summer. Not an official troop trip, just friends. I just got back from Glen Spey NY town encampment, but it was a large group and a tense event for me. The highlight though was the girls all learned how to row and we had no real boat crashes.

You a GS leader or an older GS? I was part of a GS committee that trained girls to BP. Now we just hike with the ones we last put thru the program. One of the girls has graduated college and is now a northbounder on the AT. Pretty cool.
For first timers the Catskills can be hard - depending on what you do. We are doing the Devils Pass.

M&M, I am a girl scout leader of young girls. When I was a girl scout, we didn't backpack. The moms and girls were too city. My Mom took us scouts camping in PA with the motorhome and some of the girls hated even that. I quit after that. But I want my own troop and my own girls to be more outdoorsy. About the Catskills, I'll look for something less difficult. Thanks.

Born in Hackensack. Grew up in Ridgewood, where I graduated High School. Got smart and moved to Florida.

Harriman was my second home. I also hiked the 'Dacks most summers. National Ski Patrol for Hunter Mountain in winter.

Man, I DO NOT miss those horrendous crowds of people-going-everywhere-like-chickens-with-their-heads-cut-off-and-thinking-that-they're-incredibly-smart-because-they-can-use-a-million-words-to-say-absolutly-nothing-in-about-two-seconds. There is no better place to be if you want to try to keep up with the Jones's. Ahhhh, I can still smell the polution. And how about that puke orange-brown sunrise over NY City? How romantic.

What a nice place to grow up, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Just another tuff-guy hood from duh Bronx. I'll say this, if it weren't for abundant weekend hiking possibilities, I wouldn't be here. The climate is nice, also. I'm lucky to have summers off, so I cheat the humidity cloud by heading West.

New York Sh!tty, it's a great place. The city is yours, everything is here, everything, yet I seek what no one wants, what no one has. I look for the beauty, a green spot to call my own. Who is my neighbor? Will I be touched on the subway, the best form of mass transportation. Upstate NY, my salvation, so far away, the drive becomes the focus.

RE: How many of us are tristate or NJ posters?
If you're chained to a desk or a bourgeois life, it doesn't matter if Mt. Rainier (or Park Ave.) is outside your window... and NYC happens to be set-out on the morrainal outwash of the last glacier, interesting in the naturalistic sense. And diverse. It's possible to customize trips to different weather possibilities: Go here to avoid the oppressiveness of summer. Go there to avoid the avoid the ferocious winter. And you can even say where "here" and "there" are. I find that despite a lotta wannabes and lookalikes, there aren't many b'packers in NYC. I work as part of a professional staff of 250, and I know of only one other person there who regularly b'packs. Satori, remember, is a state of mind. And sometimes I regret having become fortyish and not having extricated myself from this place. But it's a lot moe interesting for the hiker than say, Des Moines or Houston

So I guess a lot of us are dreaming of the day we can move out of the tri-state area. Where I live used to be all farm land, but the farms sold out and mini-mansions were built. The character of the town population has changed drastically as a result. I used to be part of the yuppie thing but after having kids, I feel more like simplifying and scaling back.

I love where I am. The best of both worlds. Right on the ocean. (I'm a water rat at heart), Backpacking is 1.5 hours away. And Yes - I LIKE THE CITY! - plays, museums, the village. Its quiet during the week. Summer weekends are busy with the tourists.

RE: How many of us are tristate or NJ posters?
m&m, born in Princeton, lived on Chesapeake for 6 years (love the bay!), lived many years in Somerset, then moved to western Morris County. Hiking and camping are close, so I am rediscovering. I just don't know how crowded it is yet. I go to Hacklebarney early morning on weekends and have the place to my self until about 2PM. The Poconos are very mobbed on weekends. Jenny Jump has backpacking campsites that are not real far from parking but I don't know how busy they are or what the people are like that camp there. I have lots to learn and I don't have all the equipment I need. This weekend we camped in Glen Spey with girl scouts and we were cold (maybe it was in the 40's). Need better sleeping bags for spring and fall. I also have no frame backpacks. My husband thinks everytime I'm online I'm shopping and I promised that I was done for the year. So until next year I'll have to borrow stuff.

FYI - EMS will donate camping/BPing equipment to scout troops. Its their old rental stuff they give away. Just got 15 sleeping bags, 6 externals, 4 tents from them - paramus and freehold stores. For our BS troop. email me if you want info on starting the girls on bping. I used to be on GS Council Committee that taught the girls - progression outline - with hikes to match, mostly in NJ/PA/NY area.

Yahooooo! Christmas in May! Where do I sign up? Sorry, I didn't understand your last sentence. Our council camping expert recently left the area, and I think there is a big knowledge void there. Or maybe because my girls are young they don't want to spend time answering my questions. We have a problem getting enough volunteers for council in my area, so I am sure everyone is busy.

RE: How many of us are tristate or NJ posters?
we had a group of 5 adults that took girls from all over the council backpacking. Our council has 15,000 girls/adults in it.
We would start when they were 12 with basics. Do day hikes, teach them to cook, LNT ethics, orienteering etc. Then we would take them on easy overnights/weekends and end up with doing a week-2 week trips with them in august.
