That doesn't mean their parents haven't taught them manners at home. As mentioned earlier, it doesn't hurt children to hear complaints from others. It reinforces their parents' statements. For example, my six year old had been repeatedly asking to call her friend to ask if she could go over and play. I told her no, that is rude and you need to wait to be invited. I was talking with my friend when my daughter came running up and blurts out, "Miss Nicki, can I come over and play with Saylor?!" My jaw drops and I ask, "What did I tell you?" I get that blank stare that all parents know too well. Miss Nicki says very nicely, "It is rude to ask. You need to wait to be invited." My daughter lowered her head and walked back to the car. I turned to my friend and said, "Thank you, Miss Nicki." with a big smile on my face. My daughter hasn't done it since.” 12:57:37 PM 5/15/01 RE: Smells like children... “violin...that is hysterical!.... having raised my son single since he was five.....i appreciated any outside comments and help that i could get.. ( that 24/7 discipline duty gets pretty overwhelming at times). ...especially if they were directed towards my son from the persons concerned........and i tried to be aware of my sons behavior and how it impacted others when participating in activities...i ususally did not take him to or put him into situations that were more geared to adult enjoyment.....like fancy restaurants etc..... as joy mentioned that "community/neighborhood" input helped me be more effective with getting the idea across to my child.” 1:13:28 PM 5/15/01 RE: Smells like children... “It takes a village. Man... that is sooo true. Dam I'm smart.” 1:37:35 PM 5/15/01 RE: Smells like children... “Problem with the kids? Send them to camp with Uncle bacpac. Problem solved.” 1:51:41 PM 5/15/01 RE: Smells like children... “village schmillage!” 2:28:30 PM 5/15/01 RE: Smells like children... “On a happier note. We are going to be grandparents again and we found out (ultrasound)this morning that the baby is a girl. Mary Elizabeth for both grandmothers--they will call her Molly.” 2:57:36 PM 5/15/01 RE: Smells like children... “Thanks Sunshine, that's a good point. I also realized that in my response to calnatv that it could sound like I was criticizing the parents of the children in my class, when in fact I admire them. I think I'll refrain from early morning, pre-coffee posting!” 4:44:38 PM 5/15/01 RE: Smells like children... “Lip; My 8 year old tells me to "stop smacking" my gum occasionally. I swear I don't but maybe she has better ears than me. Must have been that wonderful preschool she attended and I obviously did not. If I'm ever sitting behind you on a plane chewing gum (smacking) just turn around and smack me. Make sure it is Mozark first! LOL Seriously, she attended a wonderful little pre-school owned and operated by elementary teachers who couldn't find a decent day care for their own children. I backpack often with a teenage boy that was as rough and tough as they come. But, he was extremely polite to my surprise he had attended the same preschool when he was young. I guess Hillary was right it does take a Village. My advice is that children need to be taught the basics during the early years. Nigal; This has turned into a pretty decent thread! Mozzzzz” 9:20:22 PM 5/15/01 RE: Smells like children... “Oh I hate the "It takes a village" saying and can't stand that Hillary loved saying it so much. YUCK!” 12:11:05 AM 5/16/01 RE: Smells like children... “Hillary is awesome!” 12:55:08 PM 5/16/01 RE: Smells like children... “?If you want to know how to raise kids just ask someone that doesn?t have any.? List Hillary?s accomplishments please, so we all can know how awesome she is.” 5:35:04 PM 5/16/01 RE: Smells like children... “"It takes a Village" is a good book but I hate the fact that Hilary wrote it.” 5:52:15 PM 5/16/01 RE: Smells like children... “Mozark, okay, I will be glad to pop you on the head if I can you chewing loudly around me, lol. I had someone visit me in WA, she was filming a pretty scene and moving her mouth as she was talking for the camera. I told her husband, I hope she is talking loudly enough for the video camera. He said that she was talking, she was chewing.” 7:09:50 PM 5/16/01 RE: Smells like children... “Hillary's greatest accomplishment; PISSIN' OFF right-wing whiners! Willy Jeff's greatest accomplishment; People who complain about other people's children are for the most part just "showin' their a$$". 8:52:16 AM 5/17/01 RE: Smells like children... “Good list. Sounds all inclusive to me. Go Hillary!” 10:41:48 AM 5/17/01 RE: Smells like children... “Go Mountain Gal!” 10:51:06 AM 5/17/01 RE: Smells like children... “This thread is still alive? Okay, I?ve held my tongue (or keyboard) long enough. " Youth today love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority, no respect for older people and talk nonsense when they should work. Young people do not stand up any longer when adults enter the room. They contradict their parents, talk too much in company, guzzle their food, lay their legs on the table and tyrannize their elders" -Socrates circa 500 BC. " This youth is rotten from the bottom of their heart. The young people are malicious and lazy. They will never be as youth was before. Our today's youth will never be able to maintain our culture." -Written on clay pots from ancient Babylon circa 1000 BC. I?m sure there are some cave drawings somewhere with similar sentiments. Nigal, I usually appreciate your sense of humor but man, you?re sounding like Dennis the Menace?s grouchy neighbor Mr. Wilson here. Going to a public campground to catch up on your sleep is like going to the movies to catch up on your reading. I totally agree with Wall-man on this one, those places are for kids to be kids. Is 11:00 pm really that late? Geratol (sp?) may help you on that one. Laurelhiker has it right, you?re perspective is a lot easier to change than other?s behavior (thanks for the Tom Robbins by the way, its been a looong time). I built a backyard playground for my kids and it has become a magnet for every kid in the neighborhood. Sometimes when I?m stressed out and they are all yelling and screaming I?m nearly ready to go postal. But then I focus in on the joy behind those shrieks and, I gotta tell ya, it?s about as close to heaven on earth as I can imagine. What was pure annoyance moments before becomes a blessing. I?m glad I was able to help them have happy childhood memories and me to have a happy adulthood. The rest of the verse is: Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. Better get used to it Nigal. 8D” 11:32:04 AM 5/17/01 RE: Smells like children... “Amen, brutha!!! You IS a good guy and the children are only children for too short a time.” 1:17:14 PM 5/17/01 RE: Smells like children... “RE: "Our today's youth will never be able to maintain our culture." -Written on clay pots from ancient Babylon circa 1000 BC. Just remember, the potter was right.” 4:20:56 PM 5/17/01 RE: Smells like children... “Very nice, Violin. Every block needs a hangout for the youngsters. You are a great dad and neighbor.” 4:53:00 PM 5/17/01 RE: Smells like children... “So Violin, when is too late for kids to be horsing around at a campground. For my kids, we have always inforced a 9:30 quiet time. Even in June its dark at that hour. Sure there have been some indescretions but the kids understand limits. No limits = Anthrax til dawn in later years.” 4:58:52 PM 5/17/01 RE: Smells like children... “Violin, in my opinion that was by far the best post on this thread.” 5:42:31 PM 5/17/01
