Bargain tent for newbies “For the newbies wondering about tents, or anyone else who just needs to save bucks, Gander Mountain is having a sale on Eureka Apex 2 for only $59.99, which is $40 off list.” 10:58:50 PM 5/13/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “I will confirm that is a great deal! Eureka makes pretty good tents. I just set up and seam sealed my new Coleman Exponent Inyo 2. I like it. Got it for $84 from Globalmart.com. Cute little tent. I hope it holds up as well as everyone says. I set my friend's Kelty Assault also. What a bomb shelter if you guy it everywhere. Even has some rubber clips to clip the fly to the poles to keep them from flopping around at all. Unfortunately, the Assault retails for $450 (on sale for $340 some places). It really does have a lot of features.” 11:12:47 PM 5/13/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “R.E.I. is having a sale May 18-28. They have a North Face Talus for $139.99. Reg. $199.00 Pretty good price. Does anybody have an opinion on this tent?” 1:15:02 AM 5/14/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “Gee, Phil, I'm glad you got your Globalmart box, I didn't get mine yet, grr. Maybe today.” 7:41:06 AM 5/14/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “I'm hoping my Globalmart box arrives today too. Eureka Gossamer and MSR Pocket Rocket, plus Mtn. House food.” 1:47:11 PM 5/14/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “the gossamer rocks!” 1:49:10 PM 5/14/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “Goss. was only $63, and only $23 for the stove.” 2:11:51 PM 5/14/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “good price on both, dude!” 2:19:04 PM 5/14/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “LL, do you have a Gossamer? I know there are two clear viewpoints on them, love 'em (your side and hopefully mine) and .... At that price I'm willing to try it out when going solo where the Hennessy can't be hung, such as on the prairie part of my Dakotas trip.” 2:27:26 PM 5/14/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “i have it, and i love it. it has kept me comfy in some bad conditions. i have set it up with no stakes before, too! crazy stuff! i did a lot of research on small canister stoves and picked the snow peak giga, though. but for the price you got that one for, i think it is a good choice.” 2:33:02 PM 5/14/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “Well, it should make for an interesting trip and gear report when I get back. Probably more interesting for TTers if its a major disaster, LOL. I just hope buffalo can see well enough not to step on a low slung solo tent.” 2:41:47 PM 5/14/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “ooooooooh, buffalo, eh? dude, you're toast.” 2:50:32 PM 5/14/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “Thanks for the upper, LL! I'm getting visions of one of those old westerns with the stampede scene, except I won't have the overturned chuckwagon to cower behind, LOL. We'll call the new version "Dances with Hooves." Good thing I'm getting the tent cheap; my last thought as my campsite is trampled can be, "At least I didn't lose anything expensive, and now I can get new gear......"” 4:54:33 PM 5/14/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “well, it IS yellow... maybe they'll see that. oops, nevermind. they're colorblind. dude, you're toast. LOL!!!!” 5:04:42 PM 5/14/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “Worse yet, I think mine will be olive and gray, according to the picture GlobalMart had. They were selling a yellow Solitaire, though.” 5:58:31 PM 5/14/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “How the hell did you set up the Goss with no steaks?” 9:22:41 PM 5/14/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “Because stakes are needed. Meat is just too floppy and it only attracts varmints to your tent site. (Or is that "meet"?) Come on Ice, this is a test question. Don't give up so fast, figure it out.” 9:40:30 PM 5/14/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “Its meat, and its was a joke, because rad had a steak for dinner tonight. Pekka, do you own a gossamer? I guess he could do it if he tied the front and back ropes to a tree.” 9:57:19 PM 5/14/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “bingo!” 7:30:45 AM 5/15/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “Ice, you might want to actually read the thread before you ask questions.” 8:14:55 AM 5/15/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “I had a Solitare I sold to Oldie. I wanted a tent I could sit up in. It is a lightweight sumbitch though.” 8:15:00 AM 5/15/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “According to UPS tracking, my Gossamer/Pocket Rocket/food parcel arrived in town at 5:18 this morning. I hope they can get it across town by the time I get home this afternoon. Woo hoo! Seam sealing here I come.” 12:51:28 PM 5/15/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “It's here, and Mr. Lizard, you were right. Despite the website picture, my Gossamer has a bright gold/yellow fly, with a charcoal gray body. But I'll live with it, especially if the buffalo might notice it better, lol. Sure like the compact size of it all rolled up. And the Pocket Rocket is just so darned nifty and tiny. Even my wife thought so when I couldn't resist thrusting it in front of her face. She's being very understanding (maybe she just likes the idea that these toys will get me out of the house for days/weeks at a time this summer).” 7:03:41 PM 5/15/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “try not to play too much football with that gossamer! LOL!!!!” 7:24:14 PM 5/15/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “Hey Buffalo, go loooong.....” 7:27:45 PM 5/15/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “grrrrrrrrrrr” 9:35:53 PM 5/15/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “Now buffalo grrrrr? I would have guessed a snort and bellow.” 10:15:19 PM 5/15/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “Huh? No, I meant grrr no package yet. I have to call them. They probably sent it by way of Nome and Fairbanks, when I asked how safe the site was.” 10:27:14 PM 5/15/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “snort!!” 10:33:04 PM 5/15/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “LOL Y&C, didn't mean to mistake you for a buff. Do you use the UPS tracking system? It gives you another website to obsess over. The suprise on opening my GlobalMart box this afternoon was the packing material: instead of foam peanuts, it's shredded phone books. It's now in the compost heap on the advice of my wife, the master composter. Hang in there.” 10:36:20 PM 5/15/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “Finally! The box looked like it was packed by my Mom, which is a good thing. I got teeny tiny things: a stove, lantern and water purifyer. Maybe I can get the girls out for Saturday night to try out the new tents and these new toys.” 5:47:01 PM 5/16/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “Ah, sweet relief, eh, y&c? Which stove and purifyer? These all accumulate in the mental profile other TTers are drawing up as they compare gear preferences, sort of like BPer ink blots.” 9:30:32 PM 5/16/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “I'm new to all this. I used the Gear Guide to help with my choices but I also decided to try to stick with one type of fuel. I already had a Coleman dual fuel triple burner stove for group outings. So I got an Exponent dual fuel stove and lantern (they're so tiny!) and also I got a MSR Mini-works ceramic water purifyer for hikes because we are always near creeks and usually run out of water.” 7:42:31 AM 5/17/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “That's cool. My trusty Coleman Peak 1 stove has endured for years. Let us know how they come through for you.” 9:59:12 AM 5/17/01 RE: Bargain tent for newbies “TNF TNF TNF TNF TNF TNF TNF TNF TNF TNF TNF TNF TNF TNF TNF TNF” 10:11:41 AM 5/17/01
